Optimization of high-order harmonic generation by optimal control theory: Ascending a functional landscape in extreme conditions

A theoretical optimization method of high-harmonic-generation (HHG) is developed in the framework of optimal-control-theory (OCT). The target of optimization is the emission radiation of a particular frequency. The OCT formulation includes restrictions on the frequency band of the driving pulse, the permanent ionization probability and the total energy of the driving pulse. The optimization task requires a highly accurate simulation of the dynamics. Absorbing boundary conditions are employed, where a complex-absorbing-potential is constructed by an optimization scheme for maximization of the absorption. A new highly accurate propagation scheme is employed, which can address explicit time dependence of the driving as well as a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. The optimization process is performed by a second-order gradient scheme. The method is applied to a simple one-dimensional model system. The results demonstrate a significant enhancement of selected harmonics, with minimized total energy of the driving pulse and controlled permanent ionization probability. A successful enhancement of an even harmonic emission is also demonstrated.

Three approaches for representing Lindblad dynamics by a matrix-vector notation

Markovian dynamics of open quantum systems are described by the L-GKS equation, known also as the Lindblad equation. The equation is expressed by means of left and right matrix multiplications. This formulation hampers numerical implementations. Representing the dynamics by a matrix-vector notation overcomes this problem. We review three approaches to obtain such a representation. The methods are demonstrated for a driven two-level system subject to spontaneous emission.

Optimal control theory of harmonic generation

Coherent control of harmonic generation was studied theoretically. A specific harmonic order was targeted. An optimal control theory was employed to find the driving field where restrictions were imposed on the frequency band. Additional restrictions were added to suppress undesired outcomes such as ionization and dissociation. The method was formulated in the frequency domain. An update procedure for the field based on relaxation was employed. The method was tested on several examples demonstrating generation of high frequencies from a driving field with a restricted frequency band.

New, Highly Accurate Propagator for the Linear and Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation

A propagation method for the time dependent Schrödinger equation was studied leading to a general scheme of solving ode type equations. Standard space discretization of time-dependent pde's usually results in system of ode's of the form u_t -Gu = s where G is a operator (matrix) and u is a time-dependent solution vector. Highly accurate methods, based on polynomial approximation of a modified exponential evolution operator, had been developed already for this type of problems where G is a linear, time independent matrix and s is a constant vector. In this paper we will describe a new algorithm for the more general case where s is a time-dependent r.h.s vector. An iterative version of the new algorithm can be applied to the general case where G depends on t or u. Numerical results for Schrödinger equation with time-dependent potential and to non-linear Schrödinger equation will be presented.

Quantum Optimal Control Theory of Harmonic Generation

A new method for controlling harmonic generation, in the framework of quantum optimal control theory (QOCT), is developed. The problem is formulated in the frequency domain using a new maximization functional. The relaxation method is used as the optimization procedure. The new formulation is generalized to other control problems with requirements in the frequency domain. The method is applied to several simple problems. The results are analysed and discussed. General conclusions on harmonic generation mechanisms are obtained.
