Approximating compact objects in bootstrapped Newtonian gravity: use of the canonical potential

We consider compact objects in a classical and non-relativistic generalisation of Newtonian gravity, dubbed bootstrapped Newtonian theory, which includes higher-order derivative interaction terms of the kind generically present in the strong-field regime of gravity. By means of a field redefinition, the original bootstrapped Newtonian action is written in a canonical Newtonian form with non-linear source terms. Exact analytic solutions remain unattainable, but we show that perturbative solutions of the canonical theory can be efficiently used to derive approximate descriptions of compact objects. In particular, using the canonical potential, we can more directly and generally show that the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass differs from the (Newtonian) proper mass due to the non-linear couplings in the theory. A few examples of sources with different density profiles are explicitly reanalysed in this framework.

Quantum fields in teleparallel gravity: renormalization at one-loop

We consider the quantization of matter fields in a background described by the teleparallel equivalent to general relativity. The presence of local Lorentz and gauge symmetries gives rise to different coupling prescriptions, which we analyse separately. As expected, quantum matter fields produce divergences that cannot be absorbed by terms in the background action of teleparallel equivalent to general relativity. Nonetheless, the formulation of teleparallel gravity allows one to find out the source of the problem. By imposing local Lorentz invariance after quantization, we show that a modified teleparallel gravity, in which the coefficients in the action are replaced by free parameters, can be renormalized at one-loop order without introducing higher-order terms. This precludes the appearance of ghosts in the theory.

Effective metric outside bootstrapped Newtonian sources

We determine the complete space-time metric from the bootstrapped Newtonian potential generated by a static spherically symmetric source in the surrounding vacuum. This metric contains post-Newtonian parameters which can be further used to constrain the complete underlying dynamical theory. For values of the post-Newtonian parameters within experimental bounds, the reconstructed metric appears very close to the Schwarzschild solution of General Relativity in the whole region outside the event horizon. The latter is however larger in size for the same value of the mass compared to the Schwarzschild case.

GUP black hole remnants in quadratic gravity

The Hawking radiation of static, spherically symmetric, asymptotically flat solutions in quadratic gravity, is here explored. The emitted fermions are governed by the Dirac equation in the generalized uncertainty principle (GUP) context, that probes the spacetime (quantum) nature. The Hawking thermal spectrum is scrutinized out of the tunnelling method and the WKB procedure. The Hawking flux is shown to vanish for small black holes, for a precise combination of the GUP parameter and the coupling constants that drive the gravitational interaction in quadratic gravity, yielding absolutely stable black hole remnants.

One-loop corrections to $η/s$ in AdS$_4$/CFT$_3$

We study quantum corrections at one-loop order to the shear viscosity to entropy ratio by implementing the Vilkovisky-Barvinsky effective action in asymptotically Anti-de Sitter spacetimes. The shear viscosity is shown to receive no corrections at this order, but the entropy acquires a logarithmic correction. The coefficient of this logarithm turns out to depend on the spin of the particles running in the loop and it can be either positive or negative. On the basis of this result, we argue that the Kovtun-Son-Starinets bound cannot be seen as a fundamental property of nature beyond the classical regime.

Singularity avoidance in quantum gravity

The purpose of this work is to investigate the consequences of quantum gravity for the singularity problem. We study the higher-derivative terms that invariably appear in any quantum field theoretical model of gravity, handling them both non-perturbatively and perturbatively. In the former case, by computing the contributions of the additional degrees of freedom to a congruence of geodesics, we show that the appearance of singularities is no longer a necessity. In the latter, which corresponds to treating the quantised general relativity as an effective field theory, we generalise the Hawking-Penrose theorems to include one-loop corrections of both massless matter and graviton fluctuations.

Gravitational Waves in Effective Quantum Gravity

In this short paper we investigate quantum gravitational effects on Einstein's equations using effective field theory techniques. We consider the leading order quantum gravitational correction to the wave equation. Besides the usual massless mode, we find a pair of modes with complex masses. These massive particles have a width and could thus lead to a damping of gravitational waves if excited in violent astrophysical processes producing gravitational waves such as e.g. black hole mergers. We discuss the consequences for gravitational wave events such as GW 150914 recently observed by the Advanced LIGO collaboration.

Higgs Starobinsky Inflation

In this paper we point out that Starobinky inflation could be induced by quantum effects due to a large non-minimal coupling of the Higgs boson to the Ricci scalar. The Higgs Starobinsky mechanism provides a solution to issues attached to large Higgs field values in the early universe which in a metastable universe would not be a viable option. We verify explicitly that these large quantum corrections do not destabilize Starobinsky's potential.
