Lightlike sets with applications to the rigidity of null geodesic incompleteness

An important, if relatively less well known aspect of the singularity theorems in Lorentzian Geometry is to understand how their conclusions fare upon weakening or suppression of one or more of their hypotheses. Then, theorems with modified concusions may arise, showing that those conclusions will fail only in special cases, at least some of which may be described. These are the so-called rigidity theorems, and have many important examples in the especialized literature. In this paper, we prove rigidity results for generalized plane waves and certain globally hyperbolic spacetimes in the presence of maximal compact surfaces. Motivated by some general properties appearing in these proofs, we develop the theory of lightlike sets, entities similar to achronal sets, but more appropriate to deal with low-regularity null submanifolds.

On the geodesic incompleteness of spacetimes containing marginally outer trapped surfaces

In a recent paper, Eichmair, Galloway and Pollack have proved a Gannon-Lee-type singularity theorem based on the existence of marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS) on noncompact initial data sets for globally hyperbolic spacetimes. This result requires that the MOTS be generic in a suitable sense. In the same spirit, this author has proven some variants of that result which hold for weaker causal conditions on spacetime, but which concern (generic) marginally trapped surfaces (MTS) rather than MOTS, i.e., most of the results need a condition on the convergence of the ingoing family of normal null geodesics as well. However, much of the more recent literature has focused on MOTS rather than MTS as quasi-local substitutes for the description of black holes, as they are arguably more natural and easier to handle in a number of situations. It is therefore pertinent to ask to what extent one can deduce the existence of singularities in the presence of MOTS alone. In this note, we address this issue and show that singularities still arise in the presence of generic MOTS under weaker causal conditions (specifically, for causally simple spacetimes). Moreover, provided we assume that the MOTS is the boundary of a compact spatial region, a Penrose-Hawking-type singularity theorem can be established for chronological spacetimes containing generic MOTS.

Quantum Physics and Fluctuating Topologies: Survey

The spin-statistics connection, quantum gravity and other physical considerations suggest that classical space-time topology is not an immutable attribute and can change in quantum physics. The implementation of topology change using quantum principles has been studied for over two decades by a few of us. There has been a recent revival of interest in some of our work, dating back to as early as 1995. The present paper is meant as a resource article to our major relevant papers. It contains summaries of the contents of the cited papers and the corresponding links wherever available.

Compact Mean Convex Hypersurfaces and the Fundamental Group of Manifolds with Nonnegative Ricci Curvature

We show that the existence of an embedded compact, boundaryless hypersurface S of strictly positive mean curvature in a noncompact, connected, complete Riemannian n-manifold N of nonnegative Ricci curvature implies that the homomorphism between the fundamental groups of S and N induced by the inclusion is surjective, provided only that N - S has two connected components, one of which has noncompact closure and trivial homotopy relative to S. The idea of the proof is to view N as a spacelike hypersurface in a suitable Lorentz manifold and then apply a recent version of certain classic results by Gannon and Lee on the topology of spacetimes. As an application, we show that if N is asymptotically flat, then it has only one end, and N is simply connected for n larger than 3.

On the Gannon-Lee Singularity Theorem in Higher Dimensions

The Gannon-Lee singularity theorems give well-known restrictions on the spatial topology of singularity-free (i.e., nonspacelike geodesically complete), globally hyperbolic spacetimes. In this paper, we revisit these classic results in the light of recent developments, especially the failure in higher dimensions of a celebrated theorem by Hawking on the topology of black hole horizons. The global hyperbolicity requirement is weakened, and we expand the scope of the main results to allow for the richer variety of spatial topologies which are likely to occur in higher-dimensional spacetimes.

A Novel Spin-Statistics Theorem in (2 + 1)d Chern-Simons Gravity

It has been known for some time that topological geons in quantum gravity may lead to a complete violation of the canonical spin-statistics relation : there may exist no connection between spin and statistics for a pair of geons. We present an algebraic description of quantum gravity in (2 + 1)d based on the first order formalism of general relativity and show that, although the usual spin-statistics theorem is not valid, statistics is completely determined by spin. Hence, a new spin-statistics theorem can be formulated.

The Spin-Statistics Connection in Quantum Gravity

It is well-known that is spite of sharing some properties with conventional particles, topological geons in general violate the spin-statistics theorem. On the other hand, it is generally believed that in quantum gravity theories allowing for topology change, using pair creation and annihilation of geons, one should be able to recover this theorem. In this paper, we take an alternative route, and use an algebraic formalism developed in previous work. We give a description of topological geons where an algebra of "observables" is identified and quantized. Different irreducible representations of this algebra correspond to different kinds of geons, and are labeled by a non-abelian "charge" and "magnetic flux". We then find that the usual spin-statistics theorem is indeed violated, but a new spin-statistics relation arises, when we assume that the fluxes are superselected. This assumption can be proved if all observables are local, as is generally the case in physical theories. Finally, we also show how our approach fits into conventional formulations of quantum gravity.
