Gauge-Invariant Gluon TMD and Evolution in the Coordinate Space

Maximally path-dependent gauge-invariant operator definition of the gluon transverse-momentum dependent pdf (gTMD) is discussed. It is argued that the evolution equations for the gTMD in the coordinate representation can be derived from the equations of motion in the generalised loop space, whose elements are the hadronic averages of the Wilson loops of entirely arbitrary shape.

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions: status and prospects

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. We discuss computational tools for TMDs, and present an application of a new tool, TMDlib, to parton density fits and parameterizations.

Generalized Loop Space and Evolution of the Light-Like Wilson Loops

Equations of motion for the light-like QCD Wilson loops are studied in the generalized loop space (GLS) setting. To this end, the classically conformal-invariant non-local variations of the cusped Wilson exponentials lying (partially) on the light-cone are formulated in terms of the Fréchet derivative. The rapidity and renormalization-group behaviour of the gauge-invariant quantum correlation functions (in particular, the three-dimensional parton densities) are demonstrated to be connected to certain geometrical properties of the Wilson loops defined in the GLS.

On a Wilson lines approach to the study of jet quenching

We address the geometrical structure of the "skewed" correlator of two space-like separated (almost) oppositely directed Wilson lines. Similar objects occur in the analysis of the transverse-momentum broadening probability function, the first moment of which is associated with the jet quenching parameter. We start from the Euclidean space formulation and then transform the result to the Minkowski light-cone geometry, arguing that this procedure is consistent in the leading order of the perturbative expansion. We discuss as well the issues of the UV, rapidity and IR singularities, and possible use of the proposed approach in lattice simulations.

Transverse-Distance Dependent Parton Densities in the Large-$x$ Regime

QCD factorization approach in the field-theoretic description of the semi-inclusive hadronic processes in the large Bjorken $x$ approximation implies extraction of the three-dimensional parton distribution functions as a convolution of a collinear jet function and soft transverse-distance dependent (TDD) function defined as a vacuum average of a partially light-like Wilson loop. The soft function can be interpreted, therefore, as an element of generalized loop space. A class of classically conformal-invariant transformations of the elements of this space is generated by the non-local area derivative operator which corresponds to a diffeomorphism in the loop space and determines equations of motion, the latter being associated with the rapidity evolution of the soft TDD functions. We propose a large-$x$ TDD factorization framework and discuss practical applications of this approach to the phenomenology of the TDDs accessible in future experimental programs at the Jefferson Lab 12 GeV and the Electron-Ion Collider.

Cusped light-like Wilson loops in gauge theories

We propose and discuss a new approach to the analysis of the correlation functions which contain light-like Wilson lines or loops, the latter being cusped in addition. The objects of interest are therefore the light-like Wilson null-polygons, the soft factors of the parton distribution and fragmentation functions, high-energy scattering amplitudes in the eikonal approximation, gravitational Wilson lines, etc. Our method is based on a generalization of the universal quantum dynamical principle by J. Schwinger and allows one to take care of extra singularities emerging due to light-like or semi-light-like cusps. We show that such Wilson loops obey a differential equation which connects the area variations and renormalization group behavior of those objects and discuss the possible relation between geometrical structure of the loop space and area evolution of the light-like cusped Wilson loops.

Evolution of transverse-distance dependent parton densities at large-$x_B$ and geometry of the loop space

We discuss possible applications of the equations of motion in the generalized Wilson loop space to the phenomenology of the three-dimensional parton distribution functions in the large-$x_B$ approximation. This regime is relevant for future experimental programs to be launched at the (approved) Jefferson Lab 12 GeV upgrade and the (planned) Electron-Ion Collider. We show that the geometrical evolution of the Wilson loops corresponds to the combined rapidity and renormalization-group equation of the transverse-distance dependent parton densities in the large-$x_B$ factorization scheme.

Space-time structure of polynomiality and positivity for GPDs

We study the space-time structure of polynomiality and positivity---the most important properties which are inherent to the generalized parton distributions (GPDs). In this connection, we re-examine the issue of the time- and normal- ordering in the operator definition of GPDs. We demonstrate that the contribution of the anti-commutator matrix element in the collinear kinematics, which was previously argued to vanish, has to be added in order to satisfy the polynomiality condition. Furthermore, we schematically show that a new contribution due to the anti-commutator modifies likewise the so-called positivity constraint, i.e., the Cauchy-Bunyakovsky-Schwarz inequality, which is another important feature of the GPDs.

Evolution of cusped light-like Wilson loops and geometry of the loop space

We discuss the possible relation between certain geometrical properties of the loop space and energy evolution of the cusped Wilson exponentials defined on the light-cone. Analysis of the area differential equations for this special class of the Wilson loops calls for careful treatment of the ultraviolet and rapidity divergences which make those loops non-multiplicatively-renormalizable. We propose to consider the renormalization properties of the light-cone cusped Wilson loops from the point of view of the universal quantum dynamical approach introduced by Schwinger. We conjecture and discuss the relevance of the Makeenko-Migdal loop equations supplied with the modified Schwinger principle to the energy evolution of some phenomenologically significant objects, such as transverse-momentum dependent distribution functions, collinear parton densities at large-$x$, etc.

Layout of Wilson lines and light-cone peculiarities of transverse-momentum dependent PDFs

We consider the problems of gauge invariance, path-dependence and treatment of overlapping UV/rapidity divergences peculiar to the transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). For different formulations of the TMDs available in the literature, we check the consistency of the TMD matrix elements with the collinear parton distribution functions possessing the well-known operator structure. Comparative on- and off-light-cone layout of the Wilson lines which secure the gauge-invariance of the TMDs is presented and briefly discussed.

Loop space and evolution of the light-like Wilson polygons

We address a connection between the energy evolution of the polygonal light-like Wilson exponentials and the geometry of the loop space with the gauge invariant Wilson loops of a variety of shapes being the fundamental degrees of freedom. The renormalization properties and the differential area evolution of these Wilson polygons are studied by making use of the universal Schwinger quantum dynamical approach. We discuss the appropriateness of the dynamical differential equations in the loop space to the study of the energy evolution of the collinear and transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions.

On correlations in high-energy hadronic processes and the CMS ridge: A manifestation of quantum entanglement?

We discuss the possibility of quantum entanglement for pairs of charged particles produced in high-energy $pp$-collisions at the LHC. Using a framework of interacting Wilson lines, we calculate 2-D and 1-D two-particle angular correlation functions in terms of the differences of the pseudorapidities and azimuthal angles of the produced particles. The calculated near-side angular correlation shows a localized maximum around $Δϕ\approx 0$, though it is less pronounced compared to the peak observed by the CMS Collaboration. We argue that this soft correlation is universal and insensitive to the specific properties of the matter (quark-gluon plasma, QCD vacuum, etc.) used to describe hadronic states---though such properties can be included to further improve the results.

Evolution of transverse-momentum-dependent densities

We discuss different operator definitions of the transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton densities from the point of view of their renormalization-group (RG) properties and UV evolution. We also consider the structure of the gauge links (Wilson lines) in these operator definitions and examine the role of the soft factor in the factorization formula within the TMD approach to semi-inclusive processes.

Gluons and the quark sea at high energies: distributions, polarization, tomography

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executive summary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews for each of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions on various aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.

Spin microscopy with enhanced Wilson lines in the TMD parton densities

We discuss the possibility of non-minimal gauge invariance of transverse-momentum-dependent parton densities (TMDs) that allows direct access to the spin degrees of freedom of fermion fields entering the operator definition of (quark) TMDs. This is achieved via enhanced Wilson lines that are supplied with the spin-dependent Pauli term $\sim F^{μν}[γ_μ, γ_ν]$, thus providing an appropriate tool for the "microscopic" investigation of the spin and color structure of TMDs. We show that this generalization leaves the leading-twist TMD properties unchanged but modifies those of twist three by contributing to their anomalous dimensions. We also comment on Collins' recent criticism of our approach.

Transverse-momentum-dependent parton distributions at the edge of the lightcone

We present a completely gauge-invariant operator definition of transverse-momentum-dependent parton densities (TMD), supplied with longitudinal lightlike gauge links as well as transverse gauge links at lightcone infinity. Within this framework, we consider the consistent treatment of specific divergences, emerging in the "unsubtracted" TMD beyond the tree approximation, and construct the soft factors to cancel unphysical singularities. We confront this approach with factorization schemes, which make use of covariant gauges with off-the-lightcone gauge links, and discuss their mutual connection.

Wilson lines in the operator definition of TMDs: spin degrees of freedom and renormalization

A generalized idea of gauge invariance, that embodies into the Wilson lines the spin-dependent Pauli term $\sim F^{μν}[γ_μ, γ_ν]$, is applied to set up a new framework for the operator definition of transverse-momentum-dependent parton densities (TMDs). We show that such a treatment of gauge invariance is justified, since it does not change the leading-twist behavior of the TMDs, albeit it contributes to their twist-three properties, in particular, to their anomalous dimensions. We discuss other consequences of this generalization and its possible applications to lattice simulations of the TMDs.

Role and Properties of Wilson Lines in Transverse-Momentum-Dependent Parton Distribution Functions

We summarize the renormalization-group properties of transverse-momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDF)s arguing that in the light-cone gauge the overlapping ultraviolet and rapidity divergences cannot be solely controlled by (dimensional) regularization, but necessitate their renormalization. In doing so, we show that at the one-loop order this additional divergence entails an anomalous dimension which can be attributed to a cusp in the gauge contour at light-cone infinity. Then, we present a recent analysis of TMD PDFs which incorporates in the gauge links the Pauli term $\sim F^{μν}[γ_μ,γ_ν]$. This generalized treatment of gauge invariance is shown to be justified, in the sense that it does not modify the behavior of the leading-twist contribution, though it contributes to the anomalous dimension of that of twist-three. An important consequence of the inclusion of the spin-dependent Pauli term is the appearance of a constant phase---the same for the leading twist-two and subleading distribution functions---that ensues from the interaction of the Pauli term in the transverse gauge link with the gauge field accompanying the fermion. Remarkably, this phase has opposite sign for the Drell-Yan process as compared to the semi-inclusive DIS.

Wilson lines in transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions with spin degrees of freedom

We propose a new framework for transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions, based on a generalized conception of gauge invariance which includes into the Wilson lines the Pauli term $\sim F^{μν}[γ_μ, γ_ν]$. We discuss the relevance of this nonminimal term for unintegrated parton distribution functions, pertaining to spinning particles, and analyze its influence on their renormalization-group properties. It is shown that while the Pauli term preserves the probabilistic interpretation of twist-two distributions---unpolarized and polarized---it gives rise to additional pole contributions to those of twist-three. The anomalous dimension induced this way is a matrix, calling for a careful analysis of evolution effects. Moreover, it turns out that the crosstalk between the Pauli term and the longitudinal and the transverse parts of the gauge fields, accompanying the fermions, induces a constant, but process-dependent, phase which is the same for leading and subleading distribution functions. We include Feynman rules for the calculation with gauge links containing the Pauli term and comment on the phenomenological implications of our approach.

Renormalization-group anatomy of transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions in QCD

The ultraviolet and rapidity divergences of transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions with lightlike and transverse gauge links is studied, also incorporating a soft eikonal factor. We find that in the light-cone gauge with $q^-$-independent pole prescriptions extra divergences appear which amount, at one-loop, to a cusp-like anomalous dimension. We show that such contributions are absent when the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription is used. In the first case, the soft factor cancels the anomalous-dimension defect, while in the second case its ultraviolet-divergent part reduces to unity.

Renormalization-group properties of transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the light-cone gauge with the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription

The renormalization-group properties of transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions in the light-cone gauge with the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription for the gluon propagator are addressed. An expression for the transverse component of the gauge field at light-cone infinity, which plays a crucial role in the description of the final-/initial-state interactions in the light-cone axial gauge, is obtained. The leading-order anomalous dimension is calculated in this gauge and the relation to the results obtained in other gauges is worked out. It is shown that, using the Mandelstam-Leibbrandt prescription, the ensuing anomalous dimension does not receive contributions from extra rapidity divergences related to a cusped junction point of the Wilson lines.
