A first look at maximally twisted mass lattice QCD calculations at the physical point

In this contribution, a first look at simulations using maximally twisted mass Wilson fermions at the physical point is presented. A lattice action including clover and twisted mass terms is presented and the Monte Carlo histories of one run with two mass-degenerate flavours at a single lattice spacing are shown. Measurements from the light and heavy-light pseudoscalar sectors are compared to previous $N_f = 2$ results and their phenomenological values. Finally, the strategy for extending simulations to $N_f = 2 + 1 + 1$ is outlined.

Simulation of 4d N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with Symanzik improved gauge action and stout smearing

We report on the results of a numerical simulation concerning the low-lying spectrum of four-dimensional N=1 SU(2) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice with light dynamical gluinos. In the gauge sector the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action is used, while we use the Wilson formulation in the fermion sector with stout smearing of the gauge links in the Wilson-Dirac operator. The ensembles of gauge configurations were produced with the Two-Step Polynomial Hybrid Monte Carlo (TS-PHMC) updating algorithm. We performed simulations on large lattices up to a size of 24^3 x 48 at $β=1.6$. Using QCD units with the Sommer scale being set to r_0 = 0.5 fm, the lattice spacing is about a ~ 0.09 fm, and the spatial extent of the lattice corresponds to 2.1 fm. At the lightest simulated gluino mass the spin-1/2 gluino-glue bound state appeared to be considerably heavier than its expected super-partner, the pseudoscalar bound state. Whether supermultiplets are formed remains to be studied in upcoming simulations.

Simulations of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

Results of a numerical simulation concerning the low-lying spectrum of four-dimensional N=1 SU(2) Supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice with light dynamical gluinos are reported. We use the tree-level Symanzik improved gauge action and Wilson fermions with stout smearing of the gauge links in the Wilson-Dirac operator. The configurations are produced with the Two-Step Polynomial Hybrid Monte Carlo (TS-PHMC) algorithm. We performed simulations on lattices up to a size of 24^3x48 at β=1.6. Using QCD units with the Sommer scale being set to r_0=0.5 fm, the lattice spacing is about a~0.09 fm, and the spatial extent of the lattice corresponds to 2.1 fm to control finite size effects. At the lightest simulated gluino mass our results indicate a mass for the lightest gluino-glue bound state, which is considerably heavier than the values obtained for its possible superpartners. Whether supermultiplets are formed remains to be studied in upcoming simulations.

Hadron spectrum of QCD with one quark flavor

The latest results of an ongoing project for the lattice simulation of QCD with a single quark flavor are presented. The Symanzik tree-level-improved Wilson action is adopted in the gauge sector and the (unimproved) Wilson action for the fermion. Results from new simulations with one step of Stout-smearing (rho=0.15) in the fermion action are discussed. The one-flavor theory is simulated by a polynomial hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm (PHMC) at beta=4.0 corresponding to a = 0.13fm, on 16^3x32 and 24^3x48 lattices; the box-size is L = 2.1fm and L = 3.1fm, respectively. At the lightest simulated quark mass the (partially quenched) pion mass is ~300 MeV. The masses of the lightest bound states are computed, including the flavor singlet scalar and pseudoscalar mesons sigma_s and eta_s, the scalar glueball 0^++, and the Delta^++ baryon. Relics of SUSY in the mass spectrum, expected from a large N_c orientifold equivalence with the N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory, are discussed.

Spectrum of 4d N=1 SYM on the lattice with light dynamical Wilson gluinos

We perform Monte Carlo investigations of the 4d ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice with dynamical gluinos in the adjoint representation of the SU(2) gauge group. Our aim is to determine the mass spectrum of the low-lying bound states which is expected to be organised in supermultiplets in the infinite volume continuum limit. For this purpose we perform simulations on large lattices, up to an extension $L/r_0 \simeq 6$ where $r_0 \simeq 0.5 \rm fm$ is the Sommer scale parameter. We apply improved lattice actions: tree-level improved Symanzik (tlSym) gauge action and in the later runs a Stout-smeared Wilson fermion action. The gauge configuration samples are prepared by the Two-Step Polynomial Hybrid Monte Carlo (TS-PHMC) update algorithm.

Dynamical Twisted Mass Fermions with Light Quarks

We present results of dynamical simulations with 2 flavours of degenerate Wilson twisted mass quarks at maximal twist in the range of pseudo scalar masses from 300 to 550 MeV. The simulations are performed at one value of the lattice spacing a \lesssim 0.1 fm. In order to have O(a) improvement and aiming at small residual cutoff effects, the theory is tuned to maximal twist by requiring the vanishing of the untwisted quark mass. Precise results for the pseudo scalar decay constant and the pseudo scalar mass are confronted with chiral perturbation theory predictions and the low energy constants F, \bar{l}_3 and \bar{l}_4 are evaluated with small statistical errors.

Hadron spectrum of QCD with one quark flavor

The hadron spectrum of one flavor QCD is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. The Symanzik tree-level-improved Wilson action is used for the gauge field and the Wilson action for the fermion. The theory is simulated by a polynomial hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm (PHMC). The mass spectrum of hadronic bound states is investigated at two different lattice spacings: a ~ 0.37r_0 and a ~ 0.27r_0, corresponding to ~0.19fm and ~0.13fm in ordinary QCD. The lattice extension is fixed to L ~ 4.4r_0 (~2.2fm). The lightest simulated quark mass corresponds to a pion with mass ~270MeV. Properties of the theory are analyzed by making use of the ideas of partially quenched chiral perturbation theory (PQChPT). The symmetry of the single flavor theory can be artificially enhanced by adding extra valence quarks, which can be interpreted as u and d quarks. Operators in the valence pion sector can be built. Masses and decay constants are analyzed by using PQChPT formulae at next-to-leading order.

Nf=2 Lattice QCD and Chiral Perturbation Theory

By employing a twisted mass term, we compare recent results from lattice calculations of Nf=2 dynamical Wilson fermions with Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory (WChPT). The final goal is to determine some combinations of Gasser-Leutwyler Low Energy Constants (LECs). A wide set of data with different lattice spacings (a ~ 0.2-0.12 fm), different gauge actions (Wilson plaquette, DBW2) and different quark masses (down to the lowest pion mass allowed by lattice artifacts and including negative quark masses) provide a strong check of the applicability of WChPT in this regime and the scaling behaviours in the continuum limit.

The phase structure of lattice QCD with two flavours of Wilson quarks and renormalization group improved gluons

The effect of changing the lattice action for the gluon field on the recently observed [1] first order phase transition near zero quark mass is investigated by replacing the Wilson plaquette action by the DBW2 action. The lattice action for quarks is unchanged: it is in both cases the original Wilson action. It turns out that Wilson fermions with the DBW2 gauge action have a phase structure where the minimal pion mass and the jump of the average plaquette are decreased, when compared to Wilson fermions with Wilson plaquette action at similar values of the lattice spacing. Taking the DBW2 gauge action is advantageous also from the point of view of the computational costs of numerical simulations.

Partially quenched chiral perturbation theory and numerical simulations

The dependence of the pseudoscalar meson mass and decay constant is compared to one-loop Partially Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory (PQChPT) in a numerical simulation with two light dynamical quarks. The characteristic behaviour with chiral logarithms is observed. The values of the fitted PQChPT-parameters are in a range close to the expectation in continuum in spite of the fact that the lattice spacing is still large, namely a=0.28 fm.

Quark mass dependence of pseudoscalar masses and decay constants

The dependence of pseudo-scalar masses and decay constants on the sea and valence quark masses is investigated in the pseudo-Goldstone boson sector of QCD with two light quark flavours. The sea quark masses are at present in the range ${1/3}m_s \leq m_{ud} \leq {2/3}m_s$ whereas the valence quark masses satisfy ${1/2}m_{sea} \leq m_{val} \leq 2m_{sea}$. The values of the Gasser-Leutwyler low energy constants $L_4$, $L_5$, $L_6$ and $L_8$ are estimated. The computation is done with the Wilson-quark lattice action at gauge coupling $β=5.1$ on $16^4$ lattices. ${\cal O}(a)$ effects are taken into account by applying chiral perturbation theory for the Wilson lattice action as proposed by Rupak and Shoresh.

Lattice QCD with light dynamical quarks

We report on the simulation of QCD with light dynamical quarks using the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm. In an exploratory study with two flavours of quarks at lattice spacing about 0.27 fm and with quark mass down to one sixth of the strange quark mass eigenvalue spectra and autocorrelations have been studied. Here we present results on the volume dependence as well as tests of possible algorithmic improvements.

Numerical simulation tests with light dynamical quarks

Two degenerate flavours of quarks are simulated with small masses down to about one fifth of the strange quark mass by using the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm. The lattice size is 8^3 x 16 with lattice spacing about 0.27fm which is not far from the N_t=4 thermodynamical cross-over line. Autocorrelations of different physical quantities are estimated as a function of the quark mass. The eigenvalue spectra of the Wilson-Dirac operator are investigated.

Unquenched domain wall quarks with multi-bosons

The numerical simulation of domain wall quarks with the two-step multi-boson (TSMB) algorithm is considered. The inclusion of single quark flavours, as required for strange quarks, is discussed. The usage of computer memory can be kept relatively low, independently of the order of polynomial approximations. Tests are performed with two flavours (N_f=2) of degenerate quarks near the N_t=4 thermodynamical cross over.

Diquark condensation in dense adjoint matter

We study SU(2) lattice gauge theory at non-zero chemical potential with one staggered quark flavor in the adjoint representation. In this model the fermion determinant, although real, can be both positive and negative. We have performed numerical simulations using both hybrid Monte Carlo and two-step multibosonic algorithms, the latter being capable of exploring sectors with either determinant sign. We find that the positive determinant sector behaves like a two-flavor theory, with the chiral condensate rotating into a two-flavor diquark condensate for mu>m_pi/2, implying a superfluid ground state. Good agreement is found with analytical predictions made using chiral perturbation theory. In the `full' model there is no sign of either onset of baryon density or diquark condensation for the range of chemical potentials we have considered. The impact of the sign problem has prevented us from exploring the true onset transition and the mode of diquark condensation, if any, for this model.

Performance studies of the two-step multiboson algorithm in compact lattice QED

The performance of the two-step multiboson (TSMB) algorithm is investigated in comparison with the hybrid Monte Carlo (HMC) method for compact lattice QED with standard Wilson fermions both in the Coulomb and confinement phases. The restriction to QED allows for extensive measurements of autocorrelation times. Preliminary results show that the TSMB algorithm is at least competitive with standard HMC.

SUSY Ward identities in N=1 SYM theory on the lattice

The SUSY Ward identities (WIs) for the N=1 SU(2) SUSY Yang Mills theory discretized on the lattice with Wilson fermions (gluinos) are considered. The study is performed in the framework of a Monte Carlo simulation of the model with light dynamical gluinos. The renormalization and mixing constants of the lattice SUSY current $Z_S$ and $Z_T$ and the additively renormalized gluino mass $m_S$ are unknown parameters of the SUSY WIs. Using suitable on-shell combinations of the WIs, the ratios $Z_T/Z_S$ and $m_S/Z_S$ are determined non-perturbatively at one value of the coupling constant $g_0$ and two values of the hopping parameter $κ$.

Simulation of QCD and other similar theories

In QCD one can change the representation of the gauge group for quarks and/or the gauge group itself. Examples of such generalizations are: (a) supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory with gauge group SU(2) or SU(3); (b) QCD with SU(2) colour and quarks in the adjoint representation; (c) QCD with three equal-mass quarks. Experience and perspectives in simulations of these theories by applying the two-step multi-bosonic algorithm is described. As an example of an interesting physical problem in these theories the expected spontaneous CP-violation in QCD with three equal-mass quarks is discussed.

Bounds on the renormalized couplings in an SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R symmetric Yukawa model

The vacuum stability lower bound on the mass of the Higgs boson is numerically investigated in an $SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetric Yukawa model, which describes two heavy degenerate fermion doublets in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings. Good agreement with perturbation theory is found, although the couplings are strong. The upper bound on the fermion mass and renormalized Yukawa coupling is also determined in the part of bare parameter space where reflection positivity has been proven.

Mass Spectrum and Bounds on the Couplings in Yukawa Models With Mirror-Fermions

The $\rm SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetric Yukawa model with mirror-fermions in the limit where the mirror-fermion is decoupled is studied both analytically and numerically. The bare scalar self-coupling $λ$ is fixed at zero and infinity. The phase structure is explored and the relevant phase transition is found to be consistent with a second order one. The fermionic mass spectrum close to that transition is discussed and a first non-perturbative estimate of the influence of fermions on the upper and lower bounds on the renormalized scalar self-coupling is given. Numerical results are confronted with perturbative predictions.

Numerical simulation of heavy fermions in an SU(2)_L x SU(2)_R symmetric Yukawa model

An exploratory numerical study of the influence of heavy fermion doublets on the mass of the Higgs boson is performed in the decoupling limit of a chiral $\rm SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R$ symmetric Yukawa model with mirror fermions. The behaviour of fermion and boson masses is investigated at infinite bare quartic coupling on $4^3 \cdot 8$, $6^3 \cdot 12$ and $8^3 \cdot 16$ lattices. A first estimate of the upper bound on the renormalized quartic coupling as a function of the renormalized Yukawa-coupling is given.
