Positronia' clouds in Universe

The intense emission of 511 keV photons from the Galactic center and within terrestrial thunderstorms is attributed to the formation of parapositronia' clouds. Unbound electron-positron pairs and positronia can be created by strong electromagnetic fields produced in interactions of electrically charged objects, in particular, in collisions of heavy nuclei. Kinematics of this process favours abundant creation of the unbound electron-positron pairs with very small masses and the confined parapositronia states which decay directly to two 511 keV quanta. Therefore we propose to consider interactions of electromagnetic fields of colliding heavy ions as a source of low-mass pairs which can transform to 511 keV quanta. Intensity of their creation is enlarged by the factor Z$^4$ (Z is the electric charge of a heavy ion) compared to protons with Z=1. These processes are especially important at very high energies of nuclear collisions because their cross sections increase proportionally to cube of the logarithm of energy and can even exceed the cross sections of strong interactions which may not increase faster than the squared logarithm of energy. Moreover, production of extremely low-mass $e^+e^-$-pairs in ultraperipheral nuclear collisions is strongly enhanced due to the Sommerfeld-Gamow-Sakharov (SGS) factor which accounts for mutual Coulomb attraction of non-relativistic electrons to positrons in case of low pair-masses. This attraction may lead to their annihilation and, therefore, to the increased intensity of 511 keV photons. It is proposed to confront the obtained results to forthcoming experimental data at NICA collider.

Excess of soft dielectrons and photons

Spectra of unbound electron-positron pairs (dielectrons, in brief) and photons from decays of parapositronia produced in ultraperipheral collisions of electrically charged objects are calculated. Their shapes at energies of the NICA collider are demonstrated. Soft dielectrons and photons are abundantly produced. The relevance of these processes to the astrophysical problem of cooling electron-positron pairs and the intense emission of 511 keV photons from the Galactic center is discussed.

Ultraperipheral nuclear interactions

Large-distance ultraperipheral collisions of two relativistic ions are considered. The clouds of photons surrounding the ions are responsible for their distant electromagnetic interaction. The perturbative approach and the method of equivalent photons are described. It is shown that the total cross section of these collisions increases rapidly with increasing energy and is especially large for heavy ions. Some experimental data and their comparison with theoretical approaches are described. Further proposals are discussed.

The multilayer structure of protons

It is argued that the dynamics of the elastic scattering of high-energy protons at intermediate transferred momenta changes with the energy increase. It evolves from the multiple scattering at the external layer for energies about 10 GeV to the double scattering at the two subsequent layers within the colliding protons for energies about 10 TeV. The problem of the unitarity is considered in this context.

Asymmetric vector mesons produced in nuclear collisions

It is argued that the experimentally observed phenomenon of asymmetric shapes of vector mesons produced in nuclear media during high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions can be explained as Fano-Feshbach resonances. It has been observed that the mass distributions of lepton pairs created at meson decays decline from the traditional Breit-Wigner shape with some excess in the low-mass wing of the resonance. It is clear that the whole phenomenon is related to some interaction with the nuclear medium. Moreover, it can be further detalized in quantum mechanics as the interference of direct and continuum states in Fano-Feshbach effect. To reveal the nature of the interaction it is proposed to use a phenomenological model of the additional contribution due to Cherenkov gluons. They can be created because of the excess of the refractivity index over 1 just in the low-mass wing as required by the classical Cherenkov treatment. In quantum mechanics, this requirement is related to the positive real part of the interaction amplitude in this wing. The corresponding parameters are found from the comparison with $ρ$-meson data and admit reasonable explanation.

Critical behavior of cross sections at LHC

Recent experimental data on elastic scattering of high energy protons show that the critical regime has been reached at LHC energies. The approach to criticality is demonstrated by increase of the ratio of elastic to total cross sections from ISR to LHC energies. At LHC it reaches the value which can result in principal change of the character of proton interactions. The treatment of new physics of hollowed toroid-like hadrons requires usage of another branch of the unitarity condition. Its further fate is speculated and interpreted with the help of the unitarity condition in combination with present experimental data. The gedanken experiments to distinguish between different possibilities are proposed.

Will protons become gray at 13 TeV and 100 TeV?

It is shown that the regime of pp-interactions at 7 TeV is a critical one. The LHC data about elastic pp-scattering at 7 and 8 TeV are used to get some information about both elastic and inelastic profiles of pp-collisions. They are discussed in the context of two phenomenological models which pretend to describe the high energy pp-data with high accuracy. Some predictions following from these models for LHC energy 13 TeV and for energy 95 TeV of the newly proposed collider are discussed. It is claimed that the center of the inelastic interaction region will become less dark with increase of energy albeit very slowly.

Cherenkov and Fano effects at the origin of asymmetric vector mesons in nuclear media

It is argued that the experimentally observed phenomenon of asymmetric vector mesons produced in nuclear media during high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions can be explained as Cherenkov and Fano effects. The mass distributions of lepton pairs created at meson decays decline from the traditional Breit-Wigner shape in the low-mass wing of the resonance. That is explained by the positive real part of the amplitude in this wing for classic Cherenkov treatment and further detalized in quantum mechanics as the interference of direct and continuum states in Fano effect. The corresponding parameters are found from the comparison with rho-meson data and admit reasonable explanation.

Jets in multiparticle production in and beyond geometry of proton-proton collisions at the LHC

Experimental findings of CMS on properties of jets and underlying events at high multiplicities in proton-proton interactions at 7 TeV are interpreted as an indication of increasing role of central collisions with small impact parameters. We find an indication that the rates of different hard processes observed by CMS and ALICE universally depend on underlying event charged-particles multiplicity until it becomes four times more than average. It is shown that the increase of the overlap area of colliding protons is not sufficient for explanation of the rate of jet production in events with charged-particle multiplicity three times higher than average and some new mechanisms are necessary like interaction of protons in rare configurations of higher than average gluon density. Such mechanisms are not included in the present Monte Carlo event generators. Further studies are proposed

preprint2014arXiv

The critical regime of elastic scattering of protons at the LHC

It is shown that the darkness of the interaction region of protons is governed by the ratio of the slope of the diffraction cone to the total cross section. At LHC energies, it becomes completely absorptive at small impact parameters. The lower limit of the ratio is determined. That imposes some restrictions on its energy behavior. It is argued that the black disk terminology should be replaced by the black torus.

preprint2014arXiv

The interaction region of high energy protons

New experimental data about proton-proton collisions obtained atthe LHC allow to widen strongly the energy interval where one gets some knowledge about the structure of their interaction region. Using the unitarity relation in combination with experimental data about the elastic scattering in the diffraction cone, it is shown how the shape and the darkness of the interaction region of colliding protons change with increase of their energies. In particular, the collisions become fully absorptive at small impact parameters at LHC energies that results in some special features of inelastic processes as well. Possible evolution of the shape from the dark core at the LHC to the fully transparent one is discussed that implies the terminology of the black disk would be replaced by the black torus. The parameter which determines the opacity of central collisions also plays a crucial role in the behavior of the differential cross section of elastic scattering outside the diffraction cone where the predictions of all phenomenological models failed at LHC energies. The role of the ratio of real to imaginary part of the elastic scattering amplitude at non-forward scattering becomes decisive there as seen from the unitarity condition. The obtained results allow to estimate this ratio outside the diffraction cone for the first time by comparison with experiment at LHC energies which happens to be drastically different from its values measured at forward scattering. Moreover, the behaviors of the real and imaginary parts separately differ in different phenomeno- logical models and in the approach based on the unitarity condition. This problem is still waiting for its resolution. All the conclusions are only obtained in the framework of the indubitable unitarity condition using experimental data about the elastic scattering.

preprint2014arXiv

Torus or black disk?

We show that the interaction region of colliding protons looks completely absorptive (black) at the impact parameters up to 0.4 - 0.5 fm at the LHC energy 7 TeV. It is governed by the ratio of the elastic diffraction peak slope to the total cross section. The corresponding parameter is approximately equal to 1 at the LHC. The behavior of this ratio at higher energies will show if this region will evolve to the black disk or to the black torus. Recent fits at 7 TeV can not distinguish between these possibilities within the limits of experimental indefiniteness and of extrapolations in the regions of unmeasured transferred momenta.

preprint2013arXiv

Elastic scattering of hadrons

Colliding high energy hadrons either produce new particles or scatter elastically with their quantum numbers conserved and no other particles produced. We consider the latter case here. Although inelastic processes dominate at high energies, elastic scattering contributes considerably (18-25%) to the total cross section. Its share first decreases and then increases at higher energies. Small-angle scattering prevails at all energies. Some characteristic features are seen that provide informationon the geometrical structure of the colliding particles and the relevant dynamical mechanisms. The steep Gaussian peak at small angles is followed by the exponential (Orear) regime with some shoulders and dips, and then by a power-law drop. Results from various theoretical approaches are compared with experimental data. Phenomenological models claiming to describe this process are reviewed. The unitarity condition predicts an exponential fall for the differential cross section with an additional substructure to occur exactly between the low momentum transfer diffraction cone and a power-law, hard parton scattering regime under high momentum transfer. Data on the interference of the Coulomb and nuclear parts of amplitudes at extremely small angles provide the value of the real part of the forward scattering nuclear amplitude. The real part of the elastic scattering amplitude and the contribution of inelastic processes to the imaginary part of this amplitude (the so-called overlap function) at nonforward transferred momenta are also discussed. Problems related to the scaling behavior of the differential cross section are considered. The power-law regime at highest momentum transfer is briefly described.

preprint2013arXiv

Interplay of total cross sections and ratios of real to imaginary parts of hadron amplitudes

The impact of different assumptions about high energy behavior of the total cross section of proton-proton interactions on the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude is analyzed. It is shown how experimental data about this ratio at LHC energies can help in the proper choice of the asymptotic dependence of the total cross section.

preprint2013arXiv

Proton periphery activated by multiparticle dynamics

It is shown that protons become more active at the periphery with increase of their collision energy. By computing the impact parameter distribution of the proton-proton overlap function at LHC energies and comparing it with ISR (and S$p\bar p$S for $p\bar p$) data, we conclude that the peripheral region of protons plays an increasing role in the rise of total cross sections through multiparticle dynamics. The size of the proton as well as its blackness increase with energy. The protons become more black both in the central region and, especially, at the periphery. This effect can be related to the ridge phenomenon and to the inelastic diffraction processes at LHC energies.

preprint2013arXiv

Proton structure and elastic scattering amplitudes

Three main statements are advocated in this talk: 1. Protons become more active at the periphery with increase of their collision energy as follows from comparison of ISR and LHC data. 2. The geometric scaling is violated even in the diffraction region as follows from comparison of lower energy and LHC data. 3. The problem of the ratio of real to imaginary parts of the elastic scattering amplitude at non-zero transferred momenta is very crucial. The talk is based on arXiv:1206.5474 (review), 1202.2016, 1204.1914, 1204.4866, 1208.3073, 1209.1935, 1212.3313, 1304.5345, 1306.5384. All papers have been published already.

preprint2012arXiv

Asymptotics and zeros of the imaginary part of the elastic scattering amplitude

The s-channel unitarity condition for the imaginary part of the hadronic elastic scattering amplitude outside the diffraction peak is studied within different assumptions about the behavior of its real part. The integral equation for the imaginary part is derived with the asymptotical expression for the real part inserted in the unitarity condition. The conclusions about the asymptotical approach to the black disk limit and possible zeros of the imaginary part of the amplitude are obtained. Their relation to the present day experiments is discussed.

preprint2012arXiv

Elastic pp-scattering at \sqrt s=7 TeV with the genuine Orear regime and the dip

The unitarity condition unambigously requires the Orear region to appear in between the diffraction cone at low transferred momenta and hard parton scattering regime at high transferred momenta in hadron elastic scattering. It originates from rescattering of the diffraction cone processes. It is shown that such region has been observed in the differential cross section of the elastic pp-scattering at \sqrt s=7 TeV. The Orear region is described by exponential decrease with the scattering angle and imposed on it damped oscillations. They explain the steepening at the end of the diffraction cone as well as the dip and the subsequent maximum observed in TOTEM data. The failure of several models to describe the data in this region can be understood as improper account of the unitarity condition. It is shown that the real part of the amplitude can be as large as the imaginary part in this region. The overlap function is calculated and shown to be small outside the diffraction peak. Its negative sign there indicates the important role of phases in the amplitudes of inelastic processes.

preprint2012arXiv

Testing scaling laws for the elastic scattering of protons

Theoretical proposals of scaling laws for the differential elastic scattering cross sections of protons are confronted with experimental data over a wide energy range. Different combinations of the transferred momentum and energy resulting from the solution of the definite partial differential equation are attempted as scaling variables. Reasonable scaling of the differential cross sections in the diffraction cone has been shown for one of these variables. The violation of the geometrical scaling is ascribed to the increase of the proton blackness with energy. The origin of high-t region violations of scaling laws is discussed.

preprint2012arXiv

The black disk to be observed in the Orear region

It is argued that the very first signatures of the approach to the black disk asymptotical limit in hadron collisions may be observed in the differential cross section of elastic scattering. The exponentially decreasing with the angle (or $\sqrt {|t|}$) regime beyond the diffraction peak will become replaced by an oscillatory behavior or by the power-like falloff. Some estimates of energies where this can happen are presented.

preprint2012arXiv

The real part of the elastic scattering amplitude at nonzero transferred momenta

The model-independent solution of the s-channel unitarity condition for the imaginary part of the hadronic elastic scattering amplitude outside the diffraction peak allows to make conclusions about its real part at nonzero transferred momenta. The asymptotical properties of the ratio of the real to imaginary part of the amplitude are discussed. In particular, it is explicitly shown that the ratio changes its sign at a defnite value of the transferred momentum. Some comments concerning the present day experimental results about the behavior of the differential cross-section of elastic scattering outside the diffraction cone are given.

Soft multiple parton interactions as seen in multiplicity distributions at Tevatron and LHC

We analyse the multiplicity distributions of charged particles at Tevatron (p\bar p) and LHC (pp) energies in the framework of the independent pair parton interactions (IPPI) model. It is shown that the number of soft pair parton interactions (and therefore the density of the partonic medium) is large and increases with energy. The mean multiplicity at each parton interaction grows also with energy. This growth depends on the width of the rapidity window. The similar conclusions are obtained in the multiladder exchange model (QGSM).

The quark-gluon medium (micro- and macro-QCD)

The properties of the quark-gluon medium observed in high energy nucleus-nucleus collisions are discussed. The main experimental facts about these collisions are briefly described and compared with data about proton-proton collisions. Both microscopic and macroscopic approaches to their description are reviewed. The chromodynamics of the quark-gluon medium at high energies is mainly considered. The energy loss of partons moving in this medium is treated. The principal conclusion is that the medium possesses some collective properties which are crucial for understanding the experimental observations.

Equations, chromopermittivity and instabilities of the quark-gluon medium

The quark-gluon medium described by QCD equations is considered at high energies. Within the assumptions of the linear response theory the chromopermittivity of the medium is introduced and it is argued that it exceeds 1 at TeV energies. The dispersion equations show that the proper modes of the medium reveal instability and the parton currents traversing it induce the emission of Cherenkov gluons. Their distributions at LHC can differ from those typical for lower energies of RHIC because they are determined by the high energy dependence of the chromopermittivity while the latter ones arise due to collective resonance excitations. The distinction between Cherenkov gluons and Mach waves is discussed.

preprint2010arXiv

Polarization properties of the quark-gluon medium

Collective properties of the quark-gluon medium induced by its polarization are described by macroscopic QCD equations. The parton currents traversing it lead to emission of Cherenkov gluons, the wake effect and the transition radiation. Comparison with experimental data of RHIC reveals large value of the chromopermittivity of the medium while cosmic ray data at higher energies (close to LHC) favor much smaller values. The dispersion equations show that the proper modes of the medium are unstable.

QCD in the nuclear medium and effects due to Cherenkov gluons

The equations of in-medium gluodynamics are proposed. Their classical lowest order solution is explicitly shown for a color charge moving with constant speed. For nuclear permittivity larger than 1 it describes emission of Cherenkov gluons resembling results of classical electrodynamics. The values of the real and imaginary parts of the nuclear permittivity are obtained from the fits to experimental data on the double-humped structure around the away-side jet obtained at RHIC. The dispersion of the nuclear permittivity is predicted by comparing the RHIC, SPS and cosmic ray data. This is important for LHC experiments. Cherenkov gluons may be responsible for the asymmetry of dilepton mass spectra near rho-meson, observed in the SPS experiment with excess in the low-mass wing of the resonance. This feature is predicted to be common for all resonances. The "color rainbow" quantum effect might appear according to higher order terms of in-medium QCD if the nuclear permittivity depends on color.

Two-dimensional discrete wavelet analysis of multiparticle event topology in heavy ion collisions

The event-by-event analysis of multiparticle production in high energy hadron and nuclei collisions can be performed using the discrete wavelet transformation. The ring-like and jet-like structures in two-dimensional angular histograms are well extracted by wavelet analysis. For the first time the method is applied to the jet-like events with background simulated by event generators, which are developed to describe nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies. The jet positions are located quite well by the discrete wavelet transformation of angular particle distribution even in presence of strong background.

Moments of the truncated multiplicity distributions

In experiment, the multiplicity distributions of inelastic processes are truncated due to finite energy, insufficient statistics or special choice of events. It is shown that the moments of such truncated multiplicity distributions possess some typical features. In particular, the oscillations of cumulant moments at high ranks and their negative values at the second rank can be considered as ones most indicative on specifics of these distributions. They allow to distinguish between distributions of different type.

preprint2002arXiv

Multiparticle production and quantum chromodynamics

The theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD), is quite successful in the prediction and description of main features of multiparticle production processes at high energies. The general perturbative QCD approach to these processes (mainly to e+e- -annihilation) is briefly formulated and its problems are discussed. It is shown that the analytical calculations at the parton level with the low-momentum cut-off reproduce experimental data on the hadronic final state in multiparticle production processes at high energies surprisingly accurately even though the perturbative expansion parameter is not very small. Moreover, it is important that the perturbative QCD has been able not only to describe the existing data but also to predict many bright qualitatively new phenomena.

preprint2002arXiv

Some problems of the pQCD jet calculus

Some problems of the perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) jet calculus are discussed. The first one is related to the terminology of the order of calculation. Due to cancelation of LO and NLO terms in the ratio of mean multiplicities in gluon and quark jets $r$ the nowadays obtained results about it should be called as 4NLO approximation. The second problem reveals itself in calculations where corrections to some values (in particular, to $r'$) are larger at present energies than lower order terms. Some characteristics which do not suffer from this deficiency are proposed. Next problem lies in interpretation of the negative values of cumulant moments which are considered as an indication to the replacement of attraction by repulsion in sets with definite particle contents. Finally, the problem of the generalization of QCD equations for generating functions is briefly discussed.

Long-range particle correlations and wavelets

The problem of long-range correlations of particles produced in high- energy collisions is discussed. Long-range correlations involve large groups of particles. Among them are, e.g., those correlations which lead to ring-like and elliptic flow shapes of individual high-multiplicity events in the polar+azimuthal angles plane. The \w method of \an which allows to disentangle various patterns has been proposed and applied to some central lead-lead collisions at energy 158 GeV per nucleon. Previous attempts to find out the ring-like correlations and recent results on \w \an of high- energy nuclei interactions are reviewed.

Particles and Nuclei as Quantum Slings

Rotation of such objects as an atomic nucleus or a chromodynamical string can result in specific effects in scattering processes and multiparticle production. Secondary fragments of the rotating nucleus or of the decaying string can move like stones thrown from a sling. That would be detected as the azimuthal asymmetry of particle distributions in individual events. Non-classical states of the created particles like the Schr"\{o}dinger cats are produced. Some classical and quantum-mechanical estimates of possible effects are given. Experimental facts which can be used for their verification are discussed.

Pattern Recognition in High Multiplicity Events

In very high energy collisions, many particles are produced and distributed in the available phase space volume in various ways. With advent of new accelerator facilities (especially, for nucleus-nucleus collisions), the problem of pattern recognition in high multiplicity events becomes very actual in order to classify such events and to separate those of them with some special features (e.g. ring-like events, jets and other regular patterns). This paper presents the first attempt to use wavelet technique for pattern recognition in nucleus-nucleus collisions. After describing the method in general, we demonstrate its power by applying it to a single event of Pb-Pb collision at 158A GeV with 1072 charged particles produced and discuss results obtained for some other events. Further extension of the method is proposed.

Intermittency and Bose-Einstein correlations

The role of Bose-Einstein correlations in a widely discussed intermittency phenomenon is reviewed. In particular, it is shown that particle correlations of different origin are better displayed when analysed as functions of appropriately chosen variables. Correspondingly, if the shape of Bose-Einstein contribution is chosen to be Gaussian in 3-momentum transferred, it provides the power-like law in 4-momentum squared and is smeared out in (pseudo)rapidity.

Multiplicity Distributions of Squeezed Isospin States

Multiplicity distributions of neutral and charged particles arising from squeezed coherent states are investigated. Projections onto global isospin states are considered. We show how a small amount of squeezing can significantly change the multiplicity distributions. The formalism is proposed to describe the phenomenological properties of neutral and charged particles anomalously produced in hadronic and nuclear collisions at very high energies.

QCD EQUATIONS FOR GENERATING FUNCTIONALS AND MULTIPARTICLE CORRELATIONS

QCD equations for generating functionals are solved at coinciding momenta of particles. As a result, the relations for $q$-particle correlation functions at equal momenta are obtained. They are directly connected to previously derived results about the factorial and cumulant moments of multiplicity distributions. It is predicted that the correlations at coinciding points decrease, first, as a function of the rank $q$, and then start oscillating when represented in a form of the ratio of cumulant to factorial correlations. In particular, the cumulant function of the fifth rank should become negative at the origin. Some experimental data are discussed.

THEORETICAL SEARCH FOR COLLECTIVE EFFECTS IN MULTIPARTICLE PRODUCTION

The properties of QCD vacuum and the confinement of quarks and gluons certainly influence the multiparticle production processes. Some phenomenological attempts of the consideration of related collective effects and the possibilities of their experimental detection are briefly discussed in this review. We consider in particular the correlation characteristics of pion systems, statistical and hydrodynamical analogies, the problem of phase transition from a quark-gluon plasma to a multipion state and the possible modifications of the evolution of the quark-gluon jets. The presentation is somewhat simplified and could be interesting for those only entering the field.

Quantum Chromodynamics and Multiplicity Distributions

Quantum chromodymamics (QCD) approach to the problem of multiplicity distributions in high energy particle collisions is described. The solutions of QCD equations for generating functions of the multiplicity distributions in gluon and quark jets are presented for both fixed and running coupling constants. The newly found characteristics very sensitive to distribution shapes is discussed. The predictions are confronted to experimental data. Evolution of the multiplicity distributions with decreasing phase space windows is considered and discussed in connection to the notions of intermittency and fractality. Some other QCD effects are briefly described.
