A Direct Detection Search for Hidden Sector New Particles in the 3-60 MeV Mass Range

In our quest to understand the nature of dark matter and discover its non-gravitational interactions with ordinary matter, we propose an experiment using a \pbo ~calorimeter to search for or set new limits on the production rate of i) hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range via their $e^+e^-$ decay (or $γγ$ decay with limited tracking), and ii) the hypothetical X17 particle, claimed in multiple recent experiments. The search for these particles is motivated by new hidden sector models and dark matter candidates introduced to account for a variety of experimental and observational puzzles: the small-scale structure puzzle in cosmological simulations, anomalies such as the 4.2$σ$ disagreement between experiments and the standard model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment, and the excess of $e^+e^-$ pairs from the $^8$Be M1 and $^4$He nuclear transitions to their ground states observed by the ATOMKI group. In these models, the $1 - 100$ MeV mass range is particularly well-motivated and the lower part of this range still remains unexplored. Our proposed direct detection experiment will use a magnetic-spectrometer-free setup (the PRad apparatus) to detect all three final state particles in the visible decay of a hidden sector particle allowing for an effective control of the background and will cover the proposed mass range in a single setting. The use of the well-demonstrated PRad setup allows for an essentially ready-to-run and uniquely cost-effective search for hidden sector particles in the $3 - 60$ MeV mass range with a sensitivity of 8.9$\times$10$^{-8}$ - 5.8$\times$10$^{-9}$ to $ε^2$, the square of the kinetic mixing interaction constant between hidden and visible sectors. This updated proposal includes our response to the PAC49 comments.

Measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements in $Λ(1520)$ Photoproduction at 8.2-8.8 GeV

We report on the measurement of spin density matrix elements of the $Λ(1520)$ in the photoproduction reaction $γp\rightarrow Λ(1520)K^+$, via its subsequent decay to $K^{-}p$. The measurement was performed as part of the GlueX experimental program in Hall D at Jefferson Lab using a linearly polarized photon beam with $E_γ=$ 8.2-8.8 GeV. These are the first such measurements in this photon energy range. Results are presented in bins of momentum transfer squared, $-(t-t_\text{0})$. We compare the results with a Reggeon exchange model and determine that natural exchange amplitudes are dominant in $Λ(1520)$ photoproduction.

Photoproduction of pion pairs at high energy and small angles

We explore the photoproduction mechanisms for charged and neutral pion pairs off a heavy nucleus at threshold. We calculate the production of charged pairs in the Coulomb field of the nucleus in the Born approximation using explicit expressions for the differential cross sections and their connection with the total cross-section. The production of sigma mesons at threshold and their subsequent decay into pions is an important mechanism and is investigated quantitatively in a framework that can be used for both charged and neutral pions. Sigma mesons can be produced via electromagnetic (photon exchange) or strong (omega exchange) interactions. For neutral pions, another important production mechanism consists of the two-step process where charged pions are produced first and then charge exchange into two neutral pions. Differential and total cross sections are computed for each production mechanism.

Search for photoproduction of axion-like particles at GlueX

We present a search for axion-like particles, $a$, produced in photon-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of approximately 4 GeV, focusing on the scenario where the $a$-gluon coupling is dominant. The search uses $a\toγγ$ and $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays, and a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 168 pb$^{-1}$ collected with the GlueX detector. The search for $a\toγγ$ decays is performed in the mass range of $180 < m_a < 480$ MeV, while the search for $a\toπ^+π^-π^0$ decays explores the $600 < m_a < 720$ MeV region. No evidence for a signal is found, and 90% confidence-level exclusion limits are placed on the $a$-gluon coupling strength. These constraints are the most stringent to date over much of the mass ranges considered.

Measurement of beam asymmetry for $π^-Δ^{++}$ photoproduction on the proton at $E_γ$=8.5 GeV

We report a measurement of the $π^-$ photoproduction beam asymmetry for the reaction $\vecγ p \rightarrow π^- Δ^{++}$ using data from the GlueX experiment in the photon beam energy range 8.2--8.8 GeV. The asymmetry $Σ$ is measured as a function of four-momentum transfer $t$ to the $Δ^{++}$ and compared to phenomenological models. We find that $Σ$ varies as a function of $t$: negative at smaller values and positive at higher values of $|t|$. The reaction can be described theoretically by $t$-channel particle exchange requiring pseudoscalar, vector, and tensor intermediaries. In particular, this reaction requires charge exchange, allowing us to probe pion exchange and the significance of higher-order corrections to one-pion exchange at low momentum transfer. Constraining production mechanisms of conventional mesons may aid in the search for and study of unconventional mesons. This is the first measurement of the process at this energy.

Measurement of the Photon Beam Asymmetry in $\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0$ at $E_γ = 8.5$ GeV

We report measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $Σ$ for the reaction $\vecγ p\to K^+Σ^0$(1193) using the GlueX spectrometer in Hall D at Jefferson Lab. Data were collected using a linearly polarized photon beam in the energy range of 8.2-8.8 GeV incident on a liquid hydrogen target. The beam asymmetry $Σ$ was measured as a function of the Mandelstam variable $t$, and a single value of $Σ$ was extracted for events produced in the $u$-channel. These are the first exclusive measurements of the photon beam asymmetry $Σ$ for the reaction in this energy range. For the $t$-channel, the measured beam asymmetry is close to unity over the $t$-range studied, $-t=(0.1-1.4)~$(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$, with an average value of $Σ= 1.00\pm 0.05$. This agrees with theoretical models that describe the reaction via the natural-parity exchange of the $K^{*}$(892) Regge trajectory. A value of $Σ= 0.41 \pm 0.09$ is obtained for the $u$-channel integrated up to $-u=2.0$~(GeV/$c$)$^{2}$.

The GlueX Beamline and Detector

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab has been designed to study photoproduction reactions with a 9-GeV linearly polarized photon beam. The energy and arrival time of beam photons are tagged using a scintillator hodoscope and a scintillating fiber array. The photon flux is determined using a pair spectrometer, while the linear polarization of the photon beam is determined using a polarimeter based on triplet photoproduction. Charged-particle tracks from interactions in the central target are analyzed in a solenoidal field using a central straw-tube drift chamber and six packages of planar chambers with cathode strips and drift wires. Electromagnetic showers are reconstructed in a cylindrical scintillating fiber calorimeter inside the magnet and a lead-glass array downstream. Charged particle identification is achieved by measuring energy loss in the wire chambers and using the flight time of particles between the target and detectors outside the magnet. The signals from all detectors are recorded with flash ADCs and/or pipeline TDCs into memories allowing trigger decisions with a latency of 3.3 $μ$s. The detector operates routinely at trigger rates of 40 kHz and data rates of 600 megabytes per second. We describe the photon beam, the GlueX detector components, electronics, data-acquisition and monitoring systems, and the performance of the experiment during the first three years of operation.

First Results from The GlueX Experiment

The GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab ran with its first commissioning beam in late 2014 and the spring of 2015. Data were collected on both plastic and liquid hydrogen targets, and much of the detector has been commissioned. All of the detector systems are now performing at or near design specifications and events are being fully reconstructed, including exclusive production of $π^{0}$, $η$ and $ω$ mesons. Linearly-polarized photons were successfully produced through coherent bremsstrahlung and polarization transfer to the $ρ$ has been observed.

Workshop on Physics with Neutral Kaon Beam at JLab (KL2016) Mini-Proceedings

The KL2016 Workshop is following the Letter of Intent LoI12-15-001 "Physics Opportunities with Secondary KL beam at JLab" submitted to PAC43 with the main focus on the physics of excited hyperons produced by the Kaon beam on unpolarized and polarized targets with GlueX setup in Hall D. Such studies will broaden a physics program of hadron spectroscopy extending it to the strange sector. The Workshop was organized to get a feedback from the community to strengthen physics motivation of the LoI and prepare a full proposal. Further details about the Workshop can be found on the web page of the conference: http://www.jlab.org/conferences/kl2016/index.html .

The transverse momentum dependence of charged kaon Bose-Einstein correlations in the SELEX experiment

We report on the measurement of the one-dimensional charged kaon correlation functions using 600~GeV/{\it c} $Σ^-$, $π^-$ and 540~GeV/{\it c} $p$ beams from the SELEX~(E781) experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron. $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ correlation functions are studied for three transverse pair momentum, $k_T$, ranges and parameterized by a Gaussian form. The emission source radii, $R$, and the correlation strength, $λ$, are extracted. The analysis shows a decrease of the source radii with increasing kaon transverse pair momentum for all beam types.

A study of decays to strange final states with GlueX in Hall D using components of the BaBar DIRC

We propose to enhance the kaon identification capabilities of the GlueX detector by constructing an FDIRC (Focusing Detection of Internally Reflected Cherenkov) detector utilizing the decommissioned BaBar DIRC components. The GlueX FDIRC would significantly enhance the GlueX physics program by allowing one to search for and study hybrid mesons decaying into kaon final states. Such systematic studies of kaon final states are essential for inferring the quark flavor content of hybrid and conventional mesons. The GlueX FDIRC would reuse one-third of the synthetic fused silica bars that were utilized in the BaBar DIRC. A new focussing photon camera, read out with large area photodetectors, would be developed. We propose operating the enhanced GlueX detector in Hall D for a total of 220 days at an average intensity of 5x10^7 γ/s, a program that was conditionally approved by PAC39

A New Measurement of the $π^0$ Radiative Decay Width

High precision measurements of the differential cross sections for $π^0$ photoproduction at forward angles for two nuclei, $^{12}$C and $^{208}$Pb, have been performed for incident photon energies of 4.9 - 5.5 GeV to extract the ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width. The experiment was done at Jefferson Lab using the Hall B photon tagger and a high-resolution multichannel calorimeter. The ${π^0 \to γγ}$ decay width was extracted by fitting the measured cross sections using recently updated theoretical models for the process. The resulting value for the decay width is $Γ{(π^0 \to γγ)} = 7.82 \pm 0.14 ~({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.17 ~({\rm syst.}) ~{\rm eV}$. With the 2.8% total uncertainty, this result is a factor of 2.5 more precise than the current PDG average of this fundamental quantity and it is consistent with current theoretical predictions.

Incoherent photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons off nuclei at forward angles

Recent advances in the photon tagging facilities together with the novel, high resolution fast calorimetry made possible to perform photoproduction cross section measurements of pseudoscalar mesons on nuclei with a percent level accuracy. The extraction of the radiative decay widths, needed for testing the symmetry breaking effects in QCD, from these measurements at small angles is done by the Primakoff method. This method requires theoretical treatment of all processes participating in these reactions at the same percent level. The most updated description of general processes, including the nuclear coherent amplitude, is done in our previous paper. In this work, based on the framework of Glauber multiple scattering theory, we obtain analytical expressions for the incoherent cross section of the photoproduction of pseudoscalar mesons off nuclei accounting for the mesons absorption in nuclei and Pauli suppression at forward production angles. As illustrations of the obtained formulas, we calculate the incoherent cross section for photoproduction from a closed shell nucleus, 16^O, and from an unclosed shell nucleus, 12^C. These calculations allow one to compare different approaches and estimate their impact on the incoherent cross section of the processes under consideration.
