Paracontrolled calculus and regularity structures (II)

We prove a general equivalence statement between the notions of models and modelled distributions over a regularity structure, and paracontrolled systems indexed by the regularity structure. This takes in particular the form of a parametrisation of the set of models over a regularity structure by the set of reference functions used in the paracontrolled representation of these objects. A number of consequences are emphasized. The construction of a modelled distribution from a paracontrolled system is explicit, and takes a particularly simple form in the case of the regularity structures introduced by Bruned, Hairer and Zambotti for the study of singular stochastic partial differential equations.

Propagation of chaos for mean field rough differential equations

We address propagation of chaos for large systems of rough differential equations associated with random rough differential equations of mean field type $$ dX_t = V(X_t,\mathcal{L}(X_t))dt + F(X_t,\mathcal{L}(X_t))dW_t $$ where $W$ is a random rough path and $\mathcal{L}(X_t)$ is the law of $X_t$. We prove propagation of chaos, and provide also an explicit optimal convergence rate. The analysis is based upon the tools we developed in our companion paper [1] for solving mean field rough differential equations and in particular upon a corresponding version of the Itô-Lyons continuity theorem. The rate of convergence is obtained by a coupling argument developed first by Sznitman for particle systems with Brownian inputs.

Young and rough differential inclusions

We define in this work a notion of Young differential inclusion $$ dz_t \in F(z_t)dx_t, $$ for an $α$-Holder control $x$, with $α>1/2$, and give an existence result for such a differential system. As a by-product of our proof, we show that a bounded, compact-valued, $γ$-Hölder continuous set-valued map on the interval $[0,1]$ has a selection with finite $p$-variation, for $p>1/γ$. We also give a notion of solution to the rough differential inclusion $$ dz_t \in F(z_t)dt + G(z_t)d{\bf X}_t, $$ for an $α$-Holder rough path $\bf X$ with $α\in \left(\frac{1}{3},\frac{1}{2}\right]$, a set-valued map $F$ and a single-valued one form $G$. Then, we prove the existence of a solution to the inclusion when $F$ is bounded and lower semi-continuous with compact values, or upper semi-continuous with compact and convex values.

Heat semigroup and singular PDEs

We provide in this work a semigroup approach to the study of singular PDEs, in the line of the paracontrolled approach developed recently by Gubinelli, Imkeller and Perkowski. Starting from a heat semigroup, we develop a functional calculus and introduce a paraproduct based on the semigroup, for which commutator estimates and Schauder estimates are proved, together with their paracontrolled extensions. This machinery allows us to investigate singular PDEs in potentially unbounded Riemannian manifolds under mild geometric conditions. As an illustration, we study the generalized parabolic Anderson model equation and prove, under mild geometric conditions, its well-posed character in Holders spaces, in small time on a potentially unbounded 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold, for an equation driven by a weighted noise, and for all times for the linear parabolic Anderson model equation in 2-dimensional unbounded manifolds. This machinery can be extended to an even more singular setting and deal with Sobolev scales of spaces rather than Holder spaces.

Regularity of the Ito-Lyons map

We show in this note that the Ito-Lyons solution map associated to a rough differential equation is Frechet differentiable when understood as a map between some Banach spaces of controlled paths. This regularity result provides an elementary approach to Taylor-like expansions of Inahama-Kawabi type for solutions of rough differential equations depending on a small parameter, and makes the construction of some natural dynamics on the path space over any compact Riemannian manifold straightforward, giving back Driver's flow as a particular case.

A Stochastic Algorithm for Parametric Sensitivity in Smoluchowski's Coagulation Equation

In this article a stochastic particle system approximation to the parametric sensitivity in the Smoluchowski coagulation equation is introduced. The parametric sensitivity is the derivative of the solution to the equation with respect to some parameter, where the coagulation kernel depends on this parameter. It is proved that the particle system converges weakly to the sensitivity as the number of particles N increases. A Monte Carlo algorithm is developed and variance reduction techniques are applied. Numerical experiments are conducted for two kernels: the additive kernel and one which has been used for studying soot formation in a free molecular regime. It is shown empirically that the techniques for variance reduction are indeed very effective and that the order of convergence is O(1/N). The algorithm is then compared to an algorithm based on a finite difference approximation to the sensitivity and it is found that the variance of the sensitivity estimators are considerably lower than that for the finite difference approach. Furthermore, two methods of establishing `efficiency' are considered and the new algorithm is found to be significantly more efficient.
