Characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices

This paper is devoted to characterizations classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices by using a matrix approach. In this form we recover the Hahn, Geronimus, Tricomi and Bochner type characterizations of classical orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices. Moreover a new characterization is also presented. From the Bochner type characterization we derive the three-term recurrence relation coefficients for these polynomials.

Linear partial divided-difference equation satisfied by multivariate orthogonal polynomials on quadratic lattices

In this paper, a fourth-order partial divided-difference equation on quadratic lattices with polynomial coefficients satisfied by bivariate Racah polynomials is presented. From this equation we obtain explicitly the matrix coefficients appearing in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by any bivariate orthogonal polynomial solution of the equation. In particular, we provide explicit expressions for the matrices in the three-term recurrence relations satisfied by the bivariate Racah polynomials introduced by Tratnik. Moreover, we present the family of monic bivariate Racah polynomials defined from the three-term recurrence relations they satisfy, and we solve the connection problem between two different families of bivariate Racah polynomials. These results are then applied to other families of bivariate orthogonal polynomials, namely the bivariate Wilson, continuous dual Hahn and continuous Hahn, the latter two through limiting processes. The fourth-order partial divided-difference equations on quadratic lattices are shown to be of hypergeometric type in the sense that the divided-difference derivatives of solutions are themselves solution of the same type of divided-difference equations.

New numerical scheme of Atangana-Baleanu fractional integral: an application to groundwater flow within leaky aquifer

Many physical problems can be described using the integral equations known as Volterra equations. There exists quite a number of analytical methods that can handle these equations for linear cases. For non-linear cases, a numerical scheme is needed to obtain an approximation. Recently a new concept of fractional differentiation was introduced using the Mittag-Leffler function as kernel, and the associate fractional integral was also presented. Up to this point there is no numerical approximation of this new integral in the literature. Therefore, to accommodate researchers working in the field of numerical analysis, we propose in this paper a new numerical scheme for the new fractional integral. To test the accuracy of the new numerical scheme, we first revisit the groundwater model within a leaky aquifer by reverting the time classical derivative with the Atangana-Baleanu fractional derivative in Caputo sense. The new model is solved numerically by using this new scheme.

A class of symmetric $q$-orthogonal polynomials with four free parameters

By using a generalization of Sturm-Liouville problems in $q$-difference spaces, a class of symmetric $q$-orthogonal polynomials with four free parameters is introduced. The standard properties of these polynomials, such as a second order $q$-difference equation, the explicit form of the polynomials in terms of basic hypergeometric series, a three term recurrence relation and a general orthogonality relation are presented. Some particular examples are then studied in detail.

Linear partial $q$-difference equations on $q$-linear lattices and their bivariate $q$-orthogonal polynomial solutions

Orthogonal polynomial solutions of an admissible potentially self-adjoint linear second-order partial $q$-difference equation of the hypergeometric type in two variables on $q$-linear lattices are analyzed. A $q$-Pearson's system for the orthogonality weight function, as well as for the difference derivatives of the solutions are presented, giving rise to a solution of the $q$-difference equation under study in terms of a Rodrigues-type formula. The monic orthogonal polynomial solutions are treated in detail, giving explicit formulae for the matrices in the corresponding recurrence relations they satisfy. Lewanowicz and Woźny [S. Lewanowicz, P. Woźny, J. Comput. Appl. Math. 233 (2010) 1554--1561] have recently introduced a (non-monic) bivariate extension of big $q$-Jacobi polynomials together with a partial $q$-difference equation of the hypergeometric type that governs them. This equation is analyzed in the last section: we provide two more orthogonal polynomial solutions, namely, a second non-monic solution from the Rodrigues' representation, and the monic solution both from the recurrence relation that govern them and also explicitly given in terms of generalized bivariate basic hypergeometric series. Limit relations as $q \uparrow 1$ for the partial $q$-difference equation and for the all three $q$-orthogonal polynomial solutions are also presented.

Bivariate second--order linear partial differential equations and orthogonal polynomial solutions

In this paper we construct the main algebraic and differential properties and the weight functions of orthogonal polynomial solutions of bivariate second--order linear partial differential equations, which are admissible potentially self--adjoint and of hypergeometric type. General formulae for all these properties are obtained explicitly in terms of the polynomial coefficients of the partial differential equation, using vector matrix notation. Moreover, Rodrigues representations for the polynomial eigensolutions and for their partial derivatives of any order are given. Finally, as illustration, these results are applied to specific Appell and Koornwinder orthogonal polynomials, solutions of the same partial differential equation.

Some light on "Measurement of the neutrino velocity with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam"

The recent publication in ArXiv of "Measurement of the neutrino velocity with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam" has attracted many interest due to the possible theoretical or phenomenological interpretation of the results. A subtle broadening effect on the size of the neutrino pulse appearing in the OPERA measurements is analyzed in this paper to show that the results are in agreement with "classical" theory of relativity.
