Continuous-time noise mitigation in analogue quantum simulation

Analogue quantum simulators offer a promising route to explore quantum many-body dynamics beyond classical reach in the near term. However, their vulnerability to noise limits the accuracy of simulations. Here, we establish a new framework for mitigating noise in analogue quantum simulation, operating in a time-continuous manner. To our knowledge, this is the first protocol that is fully analogue and that achieves exact noise cancellation. Our method requires a small number of ancillary qubits, whose interaction with the system$-$combined with classical post-processing of joint measurement data$-$is tailored to cancel the effect of noise. Furthermore, the protocol is Hamiltonian-independent, robust to realistic ancilla noise, and avoids any discretization, preserving the continuous-time nature of the system's dynamics. This work opens a new direction for achieving high-fidelity analogue quantum simulation in the presence of noise.

Machine Learning based Interference Whitening in 5G NR MIMO Receiver

We address the problem of computing the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix from a sparsely located demodulation reference signal (DMRS) for spatial domain interference whitening (IW). The IW procedure is critical at the user equipment (UE) to mitigate the co-channel interference in 5G new radio (NR) systems. A supervised learning based algorithm is proposed to compute the covariance matrix with goals of minimizing both the block-error rate (BLER) and the whitening complexity. A single neural network is trained to select an IW option for covariance computation in various interference scenarios consisting of different interference occupancy, signal-to-interference ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, modulation order, coding rate, etc. In interference-dominant scenarios, the proposed algorithm computes the covariance matrix using DMRS in one resource block (RB) due to the frequency selectivity of the interference channel. On the other hand, in noise-dominant scenarios, the covariance matrix is computed from DMRS in entire signal bandwidth. Further, the proposed algorithm approximates the covariance matrix into a diagonal matrix when the spatial correlation of interference-plus-noise is low. This approximation reduces the complexity of whitening from $\mathcal{O}(N^3)$ to $\mathcal{O}(N)$ where $N$ is the number of receiver antennas. Results show that the selection algorithm can minimize the BLER under both trained as well as untrained interference scenarios.

Reversing Lindblad Dynamics via Continuous Petz Recovery Map

An important issue in developing quantum technology is that quantum states are so sensitive to noise. We propose a protocol that introduces reverse dynamics, in order to precisely control quantum systems against noise described by the Lindblad master equation. The reverse dynamics can be obtained by constructing the Petz recovery map in continuous time. By providing the exact form of the Hamiltonian and jump operators for the reverse dynamics, we explore the potential of utilizing the near-optimal recovery of the Petz map in controlling noisy quantum dynamics. While time-dependent dissipation engineering enables us to fully recover a single quantum trajectory, we also design a time-independent recovery protocol to protect encoded quantum information against decoherence. Our protocol can efficiently suppress only the noise part of dynamics thereby providing an effective unitary evolution of the quantum system.

Quantum one-time tables for unconditionally secure qubit-commitment

The commodity-based cryptography is an alternative approach to realize conventionally impossible cryptographic primitives such as unconditionally secure bit-commitment by consuming pre-established correlation between distrustful participants. A unit of such classical correlation is known as the one-time table (OTT). In this paper, we introduce a new example besides quantum key distribution in which quantum correlation is useful for cryptography. We propose a scheme for unconditionally secure qubit-commitment, a quantum cryptographic primitive forbidden by the recently proven no-masking theorem in the standard model, based on the consumption of the quantum generalization of the OTT, the bipartite quantum state we named quantum one-time tables (QOTT). The construction of the QOTT is based on the newly analyzed internal structure of quantum masker and the quantum secret sharing schemes. Our qubit-commitment scheme is shown to be universally composable. We propose to measure the randomness cost of preparing a (Q)OTT in terms of its entropy, and show that the QOTT with superdense coding can increase the security level with half the cost of OTTs for unconditionally secure bit-commitment. The QOTT exemplifies an operational setting where neither maximally classically correlated state nor maximally entangled state, but rather a well-structured partially entangled mixed state is more valuable resource.

Condition on the Rényi Entanglement Entropy under Stochastic Local Manipulation

The Rényi entanglement entropy (REE) is an entanglement quantifier considered as a natural generalisation of the entanglement entropy. When it comes to stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC), however, only a limited class of the REEs satisfy the monotonicity condition, while their statistical properties beyond mean values have not been fully investigated. Here, we establish a general condition that the probability distribution of the REE of any order obeys under SLOCC. The condition is obtained by introducing a family of entanglement monotones that contain the higher-order moments of the REEs. The contribution from the higher-order moments imposes a strict limitation on entanglement distillation via SLOCC. We find that the upper bound on success probabilities for entanglement distillation exponentially decreases as the amount of raised entanglement increases, which cannot be captured from the monotonicity of the REE. Based on the strong restriction on entanglement transformation under SLOCC, we design a new method to estimate entanglement in quantum many-body systems from experimentally observable quantities.

A Unified View of Quantum Correlations and Quantum Coherence

In this paper, we argue that quantum coherence in a bipartite system can be contained either locally or in the correlations between the subsystems. The portion of quantum coherence contained within correlations can be viewed as a kind quantum correlation which we call correlated coherence. We demonstrate that the framework provided by correlated coherence allows us retrieve the same concepts of quantum correlations as defined by the asymmetric and symmetrized versions of quantum discord as well as quantum entanglement, thus providing a unified view of these correlations. We also prove that correlated coherence can be formulated as an entanglement monotone, thus demonstrating that entanglement may be viewed as a specialized form of coherence.

Generation of hybrid entanglement between a single-photon polarization qubit and a coherent state

We propose a scheme to generate entanglement between a single-photon qubit in the polarization basis and a coherent state of light. The required resources are a superposition of coherent states, a polarization entangled photon pair, beam splitters, the displacement operation, and four photodetectors. Even when realistic detectors with a limited efficiency are used, an arbitrarily high fidelity can be obtained by adjusting a beam-splitter ratio and the displacement amplitude at the price of reducing the success probability. Our analysis shows that high fidelities may be obtained using on-off detectors with low efficiencies and available resource states under current technology.

Characterizations and Quantifications of Macroscopic Quantumness and Its Implementations using Optical Fields

We present a review and discussions on characterizations and quantifications of macroscopic quantum states as well as their implementations and applications in optical systems. We compare and criticize different measures proposed to define and quantify macroscopic quantum superpositions and extend such comparisons to several types of optical quantum states actively considered for experimental implementations within recent research topics.

Combining Schemes for Hybrid ARQ with Interference-Aware Successive Decoding

For decades, cellular networks have greatly evolved to support high data rates over reliable communication. Hybrid automatic-repeat-request (ARQ) is one of the techniques to make such improvement possible. However, this advancement is reduced at the cell edge where interference is not negligible. In order to overcome the challenge at the cell edge, the concept of interference-aware receiver has been recently proposed in which both desired and interference signals are successively decoded, called interference-aware successive decoding (IASD). Although IASD is the advanced receiver technology, interference signals are out of the mobile station's control so that they cannot be requested by the mobile station. For this reason, this paper proposes new combining schemes for the IASD receiver, which operate with hybrid ARQ in a bit level or in a symbol level. In addition, this paper compares the memory requirement among the proposed combining schemes and analyzes the impact of discrete modulation on the proposed scheme. Simulation results presents the superiority of the proposed combining schemes and shows the improvement in terms of the number of transmission.

Interference Mitigation via Interference-Aware Successive Decoding

In modern wireless networks, interference is no longer negligible since each cell becomes smaller to support high throughput. The reduced size of each cell forces to install many cells, and consequently causes to increase inter-cell interference at many cell edge areas. This paper considers a practical way of mitigating interference at the receiver equipped with multiple antennas in interference channels. Recently, it is shown that the capacity region of interference channels over point-to-point codes could be established with a combination of two schemes: treating interference as noise and jointly decoding both desired and interference signals. In practice, the first scheme is straightforwardly implementable, but the second scheme needs impractically huge computational burden at the receiver. Within a practical range of complexity, this paper proposes the interference-aware successive decoding (IASD) algorithm which successively decodes desired and interference signals while updating a priori information of both signals. When multiple decoders are allowed to be used, the proposed IASD can be extended to interference-aware parallel decoding (IAPD). The proposed algorithm is analyzed with extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart so as to show that the interference decoding is advantageous to improve the performance. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms interference non-decoding algorithms.
