IRS-Aided Energy Efficient UAV Communication

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have steadily gained attention to overcome the harsh propagation loss and blockage issue of millimeter-wave communication. However, UAV communication systems suffer from energy consumption, which limits the flying time of UAVs. In this paper, we propose several UAV energy consumption minimization techniques through the aid of multiple intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). In specific, we introduce a tractable model to effectively capture the characteristics of multiple IRSs and multiple user equipments (UEs). Then, we derive a closed form expression for the UE achievable rate, resulting in tractable optimization problems. Accordingly, we effectively solve the optimization problems by adopting the successive convex approximation technique. To compensate for the high complexity of the optimization problems, we propose a low complexity algorithm that has marginal performance loss. In the numerical results, we show that the proposed algorithms can save UAV energy consumption significantly compared to the benchmark with no IRSs, justifying that exploiting the IRSs is indeed favorable to UAV energy consumption minimization.

Coverage Increase at THz Frequencies: A Cooperative Rate-Splitting Approach

Numerous studies claim that terahertz (THz) communication will be an essential piece of sixth-generation wireless communication systems. Its promising potential also comes with major challenges, in particular the reduced coverage due to harsh propagation loss, hardware constraints, and blockage vulnerability. To increase the coverage of THz communication, we revisit cooperative communication. We propose a new type of cooperative rate-splitting (CRS) called extraction-based CRS (eCRS). Furthermore, we explore two extreme cases of eCRS, namely, identical eCRS and distinct eCRS. To enable the proposed eCRS framework, we design a novel THz cooperative channel model by considering unique characteristics of THz communication. Through mathematical derivations and convex optimization techniques considering the THz cooperative channel model, we derive local optimal solutions for the two cases of eCRS and a global optimal closed form solution for a specific scenario. Finally, we propose a novel channel estimation technique that not only specifies the channel value, but also the time delay of the channel from each cooperating user equipment to fully utilize the THz cooperative channel. In simulation results, we verify the validity of the two cases of our proposed framework and channel estimation technique.

Alternating Beamforming with Intelligent Reflecting Surface Element Allocation

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has become a promising technology to aid next generation wireless communication systems. In this paper, we develop an alternating beamforming technique with a novel concept of IRS element allocation for multiple-input multiple-output systems when a base station supports multiple single antenna users aided with a single IRS. Specifically, we allocate each IRS element separately to each user, thus, in the beamforming stage allowing the IRS element only consider a single user at a time. In result to this separation, the complexity is vastly decreased. The proposed beamforming technique tries to maximize the minimum rate of all users with minimal complexity. In the numerical results, we show that the proposed technique is comparable to the convex optimization-based benchmark with sufficiently less complexity.
