Electron Transfer and Spin-Orbit Coupling: How Strong are Berry Force Effects In and Out of Equilibrium in the Presence of Nuclear Friction?

We investigate a spin-boson inspired model of electron transfer, where the diabatic coupling is given by a position-dependent phase, exp(iWx). We consider both equilibrium and nonequilibrium initial conditions. We show that, for this model, all equilibrium results are completely invariant to the sign of W(to infinite order). However, the nonequilibrium results do depend on the sign of W, suggesting that photo-induced electron transfer dynamics are meaningfully affected by Berry forces even in the presence of nuclear friction; furthermore, whenever there is spin-orbit coupling, electronic spin polarization can emerge (at least for some time).

Incorporating Berry Force Effects into The Fewest Switches Surface Hopping Algorithm: Intersystem Crossing and The Case of Electronic Degeneracy

We present a preliminary surface-hopping approach for modeling intersystem crossing (ISC) dynamics between four electronic states: one singlet and one (triply degenerate) triplet. In order to incorporate all Berry force effects, the algorithm requires that, when moving along an adiabatic surface associated with the triplet manifold, \mycomment{one must also keep track of a quasi-diabatic index (akin to a "$m_s$" quantum number) for each trajectory. For a simple model problem, we find that a great deal of new physics can be captured by our algorithm, setting the stage for larger, more realistic (or perhaps even {\em ab initio}) simulations in the future.

On The Inclusion of One Double Within CIS and TD-DFT

We present an improved approach for generating a set of optimized frontier orbitals (HOMO and LUMO) that minimizes the energy of one double configuration. We further benchmark the effect of including such a double within a CIS or TD-DFT configuration interaction Hamiltonian for a set of test cases. We find that, although we cannot achieve quantitative accuracy, the algorithm is quite robust and routinely delivers an enormous qualitative improvement to standard single-reference electronic structure calculations.

Analytic Gradients and Derivative Couplings for Configuration Interaction with All Single Excitations and One Double Excitation -- En Route to Nonadiabatic Dynamics

We present analytic gradients and derivative couplings for the simplest possible multireference configuration interaction method, CIS-1D, an electronic structure ansatz that includes all single excitations and one lone double excitation on top of a Hartree-Fock reference state. We show that the resulting equations are numerically stable and require the evaluation of a similar number of integrals as compared to standard CIS theory; one can easily differentiate the required frontier orbitals ($\mathtt{h}$ and $\mathtt{l}$) with minimal cost. The resulting algorithm has been implemented within the Q-Chem electronic structure package and should be immediately useful for understanding photochemistry with $S_{0}$-$S_{1}$ crossings.

A Demonstration of Consistency between the Quantum Classical Liouville Equation and Berry's Phase and Curvature

Although the quantum classical Liouville equation (QCLE) arises by cutting off the exact equation of motion for a coupled nuclear-electronic system at order 1 (1 = $\hbar^0$ ), we show that the QCLE does include Berry's phase effects and Berry's forces (which are proportional to a higher order, $\hbar$ = $\hbar^1$ ). Thus, the fundamental equation underlying mixed quantum-classical dynamics does not need a correction for Berry's phase effects and is valid for the case of complex Hamiltonians. Furthermore, we also show that, even though Tully's surface hopping model ignores Berry's phase, Berry's phase effects are included automatically within Ehrenfest dynamics. These findings should be of great importance if we seek to model coupled nuclear-electronic dynamics for systems with spin-orbit coupling, where the complex nature of the Hamiltonian is paramount.
