Approaching the Gaussian channel capacity with APSK constellations

We consider the Gaussian channel with power constraint P. A gap exists between the channel capacity and the highest achievable rate of equiprobable uniformly spaced signal. Several approaches enable to overcome this limitation such as constellations with non-uniform probability or constellation shaping. In this letter, we focus on constellation shaping. We give a construction of amplitude and phase-shift keying (APSK) constellations with equiprobable signaling that achieve the Gaussian capacity as the number of constellation points goes to infinity.

Optimal DVB-S2 spectral efficiency with hierarchical modulation

We study the design of a DVB-S2 system in order to maximise spectral efficiency. This task is usually challenging due to channel variability. The solution adopted in modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 relies mainly on a time sharing strategy. Recently, we proposed to combine time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of broadcast systems. However, the optimal spectral efficiency remained an open question. In this paper, we show that the optimal transmission rate is the solution of a linear programming problem. We also study the performance of the optimal scheme for a DVB-S2 use case.

Performance Evaluation of Bit Division Multiplexing combined with Non-Uniform QAM

Broadcasting systems have to deal with channel variability in order to offer the best spectral efficiency to the receivers. However, the transmission parameters that maximise the spectral efficiency generally leads to a large link unavailability. In this paper, we study analytically the trade-off between spectral efficiency and coverage for various channel resource allocation strategies when broadcasting two services. More precisely, we consider the following strategies: time sharing, hierarchical modulation and bit division multiplexing. Our main contribution is the combination of bit division multiplexing with non-uniform QAM to improve the performance of broadcasting systems. The results show that this scheme outperforms all the previous channel resource allocation strategies.

Quasi-optimal grouping for broadcast systems with hierarchical modulation

Recently, we proposed to combine time sharing with hierarchical modulation to increase the transmission rate of broadcast systems. Our proposal involves to group the receivers in pairs in order to transmit with hierarchical modulation. We introduced several grouping strategies but the optimal matching remained an open question. In this letter, we show that the optimal grouping is the solution of an assignment problem, for which efficient algorithms exist such as the Hungarian method. Based on this algorithm, we study the performance of the optimal grouping in terms of spectrum efficiency for a DVB-S2 system.

Combining Adaptive Coding and Modulation with Hierarchical Modulation in Satcom Systems

We investigate the design of a broadcast system in order to maximise the throughput. This task is usually challenging due to the channel variability. Forty years ago, Cover introduced and compared two schemes: time sharing and superposition coding. Even if the second scheme was proved to be optimal for some channels, modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 mainly rely on time sharing strategy to optimize the throughput. They consider hierarchical modulation, a practical implementation of superposition coding, but only for unequal error protection or backward compatibility purposes. We propose in this article to combine time sharing and hierarchical modulation together and show how this scheme can improve the performance in terms of available rate. We introduce the hierarchical 16-APSK to boost the performance of the DVB-S2 standard. We also evaluate various strategies to group the receivers in pairs when using hierarchical modulation. Finally, we show in a realistic use case based on DVB-S2 that the combined scheme can provide throughput gains greater than 10% compared to the best time sharing strategy.

DVB-S2 Spectrum Efficiency Improvement with Hierarchical Modulation

We study the design of a DVB-S2 system in order to maximise spectrum efficiency. This task is usually challenging due to channel variability. Modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 rely mainly on a time sharing strategy to optimise the spectrum efficiency. Recently, we showed that combining time sharing with hierarchical modulation can provide significant gains (in terms of spectrum efficiency) compared to the best time sharing strategy. However, our previous design does not improve the DVB-S2 performance when all the receivers experience low or large signal-to-noise ratios. In this article, we introduce and study a hierarchical QPSK and a hierarchical 32-APSK to overcome the previous limitations. We show in a realistic case based on DVB-S2 that the hierarchical QPSK provides an improvement when the receivers experience poor channel condition, while the 32-APSK increases the spectrum efficiency when the receivers experience good channel condition.

A Cooperative Network Coding Strategy for the Interference Relay Channel

In this paper, we study an interference relay network with a satellite as relay. We propose a cooperative strategy based on physical layer network coding and superposition modulation decoding for uni-directional communications among users. The performance of our solution in terms of throughput is evaluated through capacity analysis and simulations that include practical constraints such as the lack of synchronization in time and frequency. We demonstrate throughputs significantly larger than the classical time sharing case.

Improving broadcast channel rate using hierarchical modulation

We investigate the design of a broadcast system where the aim is to maximise the throughput. This task is usually challenging due to the channel variability. Modern satellite communications systems such as DVB-SH and DVB-S2 mainly rely on time sharing strategy to optimize throughput. They consider hierarchical modulation but only for unequal error protection or backward compatibility purposes. We propose in this article to combine time sharing and hierarchical modulation together and show how this scheme can improve the performance in terms of available rate. We present the gain on a simple channel modeling the broadcasting area of a satellite. Our work is applied to the DVB-SH standard, which considers hierarchical modulation as an optional feature.
