Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

For solid-state materials, the electronic structure, E(k), is critical in determining a crystal's physical properties. By experimentally detecting the electronic structure, the fundamental physics can be revealed. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is a powerful technique for directly observing the electronic structure with energy- and momentum-resolved information. Over the past decades, major improvements in the energy and momentum resolution, alongside the extension of ARPES observables to spin (SpinARPES), micrometer or nanometer lateral dimensions (MicroARPES/NanoARPES), and femtosecond timescales (TrARPES), have led to major scientific advances. These advantages have been achieved across a wide range of quantum materials, such as high-temperature superconductors, topological materials, two-dimensional materials and heterostructures. This primer introduces key aspects of ARPES principles, instrumentation, data analysis, and representative scientific cases to demonstrate the power of the method. Perspectives and challenges on future developments are also discussed.

Coexistence of extended flat band and Kekulé order in Li-intercalated graphene

Doping graphene near the 1/4 filling to shift the extended flat band and van Hove singularity below E$_F$ has been highly desirable. Here we report the experimental observation of an extended flat band below E$_F$ in Li-intercalated graphene. Strong electron-phonon interaction is clearly identified by notable kinks in the band dispersion. Moreover, the evolution of the band structure upon Li intercalation shows that the extended flat band and the Kekulé order emerge simultaneously. Our work provides opportunities for investigating flat band related instabilities and its interplay with the Kekulé order

Triples-to-Text Generation with Reinforcement Learning Based Graph-augmented Neural Networks

Considering a collection of RDF triples, the RDF-to-text generation task aims to generate a text description. Most previous methods solve this task using a sequence-to-sequence model or using a graph-based model to encode RDF triples and to generate a text sequence. Nevertheless, these approaches fail to clearly model the local and global structural information between and within RDF triples. Moreover, the previous methods also face the non-negligible problem of low faithfulness of the generated text, which seriously affects the overall performance of these models. To solve these problems, we propose a model combining two new graph-augmented structural neural encoders to jointly learn both local and global structural information in the input RDF triples. To further improve text faithfulness, we innovatively introduce a reinforcement learning (RL) reward based on information extraction (IE). We first extract triples from the generated text using a pretrained IE model and regard the correct number of the extracted triples as the additional RL reward. Experimental results on two benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed model outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines, and the additional reinforcement learning reward does help to improve the faithfulness of the generated text.

Experimental observation of topological Fermi arcs in type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2

Weyl semimetal is a new quantum state of matter [1-12] hosting the condensed matter physics counterpart of relativisticWeyl fermion [13] originally introduced in high energy physics. The Weyl semimetal realized in the TaAs class features multiple Fermi arcs arising from topological surface states [10, 11, 14-16] and exhibits novel quantum phenomena, e.g., chiral anomaly induced negative mag-netoresistance [17-19] and possibly emergent supersymmetry [20]. Recently it was proposed theoretically that a new type (type-II) of Weyl fermion [21], which does not have counterpart in high energy physics due to the breaking of Lorentz invariance, can emerge as topologically-protected touching between electron and hole pockets. Here, we report direct spectroscopic evidence of topological Fermi arcs in the predicted type-II Weyl semimetal MoTe2 [22-24]. The topological surface states are confirmed by directly observing the surface states using bulk-and surface-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), and the quasi-particle interference (QPI) pattern between the two putative Fermi arcs in scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Our work establishes MoTe2 as the first experimental realization of type-II Weyl semimetal, and opens up new opportunities for probing novel phenomena such as exotic magneto-transport [21] in type-II Weyl semimetals.
