Constraints on modified Chaplygin gas from recent observations and a comparison of its status with other models

In this Letter, a modified Chaplygin gas (MCG) model of unifying dark energy and dark matter with the exotic equation of state pMCG=BρMCG−AρMCGαp_{MCG}=Bρ_{MCG} -\frac A{ρ_{MCG}^α} is constrained from recently observed data: the 182 Gold SNe Ia, the 3-year WMAP and the SDSS baryon acoustic peak. It is shown that the best fit value of the three parameters (BB,BsB_{s},αα) in MCG model are (-0.085,0.822,1.724). Furthermore, we find the best fit w(z)w(z) crosses -1 in the past and the present best fit value w(0)=−1.114<−1w(0)=-1.114<-1, and the 1σ1σ confidence level of w(0)w(0) is −0.946≤w(0)≤−1.282-0.946\leq w(0)\leq-1.282. Finally, we find that the MCG model has the smallest χmin2χ^{2}_{min} value in all eight given models. According to the Alaike Information Criterion (AIC) of model selection, we conclude that recent observational data support the MCG model as well as other popular models.

Exact Global Solutions of Brane Universes and Big Bounce

Exact global solutions of five-dimensional cosmological models compactified on a S1/Z2S_1/Z_2 orbifold with two 3-branes are presented, and evolution of a simple model is studied. It is found that on all 4D spacetime hypersurfaces, except a singular one, the expanding universe was started not from a big bang but from a big bounce, and before the bounce the universe was in a deflationary contracting phase. It is also found that whether the energy density on the second brane is positive, zero, or negative depends on the size of the fifth dimension.

Radiating sources in higher-dimensional gravity

We study a time-dependent 5D metric which contains a static 4D sub-metric whose 3D part is spherically symmetric. An expansion in the metric coefficient allow us to obtain close-to Schwarzschild approximation to a class of spherically-symmetric solutions. Using Campbell's embedding theorem and the induced-matter formalism we obtain two 4D solutions. One describes a source with the stiff equation of state believed to be applicable to dense astrophysical objects, and the other describes a spherical source with a radial heat flow.

Universe Models with a Variable Cosmological "Constant" and a "Big Bounce"

We present a rich class of exact solutions which contains radiation-dominated and matter-dominated models for the early and late universe. They include a variable cosmological ``constant'' which is derived from a higher dimension and manifests itself in spacetime as an energy density for the vacuum. This is in agreement with observational data and is compatible with extensions of general relativity to string and membrane theory. Our solutions are also typified by a non-singular ``big bounce'' (as opposed to a singular big bang), where matter is created as in inflationary cosmology.
