Classification and geometric properties of surfaces with property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$

Let $X$ be a closed subscheme of codimension $e$ in a projective space. One says that $X$ satisfies property ${\bf N}_{d,p}$, if the $i$-th syzygies of the homogeneous coordinate ring are generated by elements of degree $<d+i$ for $0\le i\le p$. The geometric and algebraic properties of smooth projective varieties satisfying property ${\bf N}_{2,e}$ are well understood, and the complete classification of these varieties is a classical result. The aim of this paper is to study the next case: projective surfaces in $\Bbb P^5$ satisfying property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$. In particular, we give a classification of such varieties using adjunction mappings and we also provide illuminating examples of our results via calculations done with Macaulay 2. As corollaries, we study the CI-biliaison equivalence class of smooth projective surfaces of degree $10$ satisfying property ${\bf N}_{3,3}$ on a cubic fourfold.

On the sectional genera and Cohen-Macaulay rings

We explore the behavior of the sectional genera of certain primary ideals in Noetherian local rings. In this paper, we provide characterizations of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring in terms of the sectional genera, the Cohen-Macaulay type, and the second Hilbert coefficients for certain primary ideals. We also characterize Gorenstein rings and quasi-Buchsbaum rings in terms of the sectional genera for certain primary ideals.

Eventually index of reducibility on sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules

It is shown that a module is sequentially Cohen-Macaulay if and only if the index of reducibility for distinguished parameter ideals are eventually constant with special value. As corollaries to the main theorem we given to characterize the Gorensteinness, Cohen-Macaulayness of local rings in term of eventually index of reducibility for distinguished parameter ideals.

On the index of reducibility in Noetherian modules

Let $M$ be a finitely generated module over a Noetherian ring $R$ and $N$ a submodule. The index of reducibility ir$_M(N)$ is the number of irreducible submodules that appear in an irredundant irreducible decomposition of $N$ (this number is well defined by a classical result of Emmy Noether). Then the main results of this paper are: (1) $\mathrm{ir}_M(N) = \sum_{{\frak p} \in \mathrm{Ass}_R(M/N)} \dim_{k(\frak p)} \mathrm{Soc}(M/N)_{\frak p} $; (2) For an irredundant primary decomposition of $N = Q_1 \cap \cdots \cap Q_n$, where $Q_i$ is $\frak p_i$-primary, then $\mathrm{ir}_M(N) = \mathrm{ir}_M(Q_1) + \cdots + \mathrm{ir}_M(Q_n)$ if and only if $Q_i$ is a $\frak p_i$-maximal embedded component of $N$ for all embedded associated prime ideals $\frak p_i$ of $N$; (3) For an ideal $I$ of $R$ there exists a polynomial $\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n)$ such that $\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n)=\mathrm{ir}_M(I^nM)$ for $n\gg 0$. Moreover, $\mathrm{bight}_M(I)-1\le °(\mathrm{Ir}_{M,I}(n))\le \ell_M(I)-1$; (4) If $(R, \frak m)$ is local, $M$ is Cohen-Macaulay if and only if there exist an integer $l$ and a parameter ideal $\frak q$ of $M$ contained in $\frak m^l$ such that $\mathrm{ir}_M({\frak q}M)=\dim_k\mathrm{Soc}(H^d_{\frak m}(M))$, where $d=\dim M$.

The Chern Coefficient and Cohen-Macaulay rings

The purpose of this paper is to investigate a relationship between the index of reducibility and the Chern coefficient for primary ideals. Therefore, the main result of this paper gives a characterization of a Cohen-Macaulay ring in terms of its the index of reducibility, its Cohen-Macaulay type, and the Chern coefficient for parameter ideals. As corollaries to the main theorem we obtained the characterizations of a Gorenstein ring in term of its Chern coefficient for parameter ideals.

Huneke-Wiegand conjecture and change of rings

Let $R$ be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension one with a canonical module $\rm{K_R}$. Let $I$ be a faithful ideal of $R$. We explore the problem of when $I \otimes_RI^{\vee}$ is torsionfree, where $I^{\vee} = \operatorname{Hom_R(I, \rm{K_R})}$. We prove that if $R$ has multiplicity at most $6$, then $I$ is isomorphic to $R$ or $\rm{K_R}$ as an $R$-module, once $I\otimes_RI^{\vee}$ is torsionfree. This result is applied to monomial ideals of numerical semigroup rings. A higher dimensional assertion is also discussed.

Hilbert coefficients and sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules

The purpose of this paper is to present a characterization of sequentially Cohen-Macaulay modules in terms of its Hilbert coefficients with respect to distinguished parameter ideals. The formulas involve arithmetic degrees. Among corollaries of the main result we obtain a short proof of Vasconcelos Vanishing Conjecture for modules and an upper bound for the first Hilbert coefficient.

On a new invariant of finitely generated modules over local rings

Let $M$ be a finitely generated module on a local ring $R$ and $\F: M_0\subset M_1\subset...\subset M_t=M$ a filtration of submodules of $M$ such that $ d_o<d_1< ... <d_t=d$, where $d_i=\dim M_i$. This paper is concerned with a non-negative integer $p_\mathcal F(M)$ which is defined as the least degree of all polynomials in $n_1, ..., n_d$ bounding above the function $$\ell(M/(x_1^{n_1}, ..., x_d^{n_d})M)-\sum_{i=0}^tn_1...n_{d_i}e(x_1,..., x_{d_i};M_i).$$ We prove that $p_\mathcal F(M)$ is independent of the choices of good systems of parameters $\underline x=x_1, ..., x_d$. When $\F$ is the dimension filtration of $M$ we also present some relations between $p_\F(M)$ and the polynomial type of each $M_i/M_{i-1}$ and the dimension of the non-sequentially Cohen-Macaulay locus of $M$.
