A New Constraint on the Optical Depth from the Reionization History Independent of CMB Large-Scale E-Mode Polarization

Recent studies report a mild discrepancy between baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) and cosmic microwave background (CMB) measurements within the ΛΛCDM framework. This discrepancy could be explained if the optical depth ττ inferred from the CMB large-scale E-mode polarization is underestimated, which may be biased by foreground-subtraction or instrumental systematics. In this work, we present a determination of ττ independent of the large-scale E-mode polarization, using the latest measurements of the redshift evolution of the neutral hydrogen fraction xHI(z)x_\mathrm{HI}(z), which is constrained by Lyman-αα forest and damping-wing absorption measurements at z∼5z\sim5-1414, based on ground-based optical and JWST observations. Combining xHI(z)x_\mathrm{HI}(z) with the Planck CMB power spectra excluding the large-scale E-mode polarization, we obtain τ=0.0552−0.0026+0.0019τ=0.0552^{+0.0019}_{-0.0026}, a stringent constraint consistent with the previous CMB results including the large-scale E-mode. We also evaluate a potential systematic error in our method associated with absorption modeling, obtaining τ=0.0552−0.0049+0.0075τ=0.0552^{+0.0075}_{-0.0049}. Using this constraint on ττ, we resolve the degeneracy in the ττ-ΩmΩ_m plane and find a 2.4σ2.4σ tension with the DESI DR2 BAO results, thereby confirming the claimed mild discrepancy suggestive of physics beyond ΛΛCDM. Finally, we derive an upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses, Σmν<0.0550 (0.0717)Σm_ν<0.0550\,(0.0717) eV at the 95% (99%) confidence level. This limit favors the normal mass ordering and, when combined with the lower limits from neutrino oscillation experiments, yields a further constraint, Σmν=0.0594−0.0007+0.0113Σm_ν=0.0594_{-0.0007}^{+0.0113} eV. However, the cosmological upper limit and the oscillation-based lower limit show a mild 2.2σ2.2σ tension, providing an independent indication of possible physics beyond ΛΛCDM.

VENUS: Two Faint Little Red Dots Separated by ∼70 pc\sim70\,\mathrm{pc} Hidden in a Single Lensed Galaxy at z∼7z\sim7

We report the identification of a pair of faint little red dots (LRDs), dubbed Red Eyes, in a strongly-lensed galaxy at z∼7z\sim7 behind the PLCKG004.5-10.5 cluster, identified from the JWST Treasury program VENUS. Red Eyes are spatially resolved on the image plane with distinct colors, while the critical curve lies far north of Red Eyes, clearly requiring two different LRDs rather than a single LRD. Red Eyes is an extremely close pair of LRDs separated by ∼70 pc\sim70\,\mathrm{pc} in the source plane with a magnification of μ∼20μ\sim20, which consistently explains another counter-image detected to the north-west. Red Eyes is hosted in a typical star-forming galaxy with MUV,int∼−19M_{\mathrm{UV,int}}\sim -19, but its own UV emission is very faint (MUV,int≳−16M_{\mathrm{UV,int}} \gtrsim -16). Moreover, Red Eyes does not reside at the galaxy center but lies at an offset position of approximately one effective radius ReR_{\mathrm{e}} away from the galaxy center. If observed without lensing, Red Eyes would appear as a typical star-forming galaxy at z∼7z\sim 7 with MUV∼−19M_{\mathrm{UV}}\sim -19, showing no apparent LRD signatures in either morphology or SED. These results suggest that multiple off-center LRDs, similar to Red Eyes, may be commonly hidden in a typical high-zz star-forming galaxy. In this case, various plausible scenarios may emerge, one of which is that intermediate-mass black holes (IMBHs) with MBH∼104–6 M⊙M_\mathrm{BH}\sim10^{4\text{--}6}\,M_\odot may form in star clusters on a stellar disk and contribute to the growth of the central supermassive black hole via mergers, with some IMBHs detectable as luminous LRDs in a sufficiently active and massive phase.

Census for the Rest-frame Optical and UV Morphologies of Galaxies at z=4−10z=4-10: First Phase of Inside-Out Galaxy Formation

We present the rest-frame optical and UV surface brightness (SB) profiles for 149149 galaxies with Mopt<−19.4M_{\rm opt}< -19.4 mag at z=4z=4-1010 (2929 of which are spectroscopically confirmed with JWST NIRSpec), securing high signal-to-noise ratios of 1010-135135 with deep JWST NIRCam 11-5μ5μm images obtained by the CEERS survey. We derive morphologies of our high-zz galaxies, carefully evaluating the systematics of SB profile measurements with Monte Carlo simulations as well as the impacts of a) AGNs, b) multiple clumps including galaxy mergers, c) spatial resolution differences with previous HST studies, and d) strong emission lines, e.g., Hαα and [OIII], on optical morphologies with medium-band F410M images. Conducting Sérsic profile fitting to our high-zz galaxy SBs with GALFIT, we obtain the effective radii of optical re,optr_{\rm e, opt} and UV re,UVr_{\rm e, UV} wavelengths ranging re,opt=0.05r_{\rm e, opt}=0.05-1.61.6 kpc and re,UV=0.03r_{\rm e, UV}=0.03-1.71.7 kpc that are consistent with previous results within large scatters in the size luminosity relations. However, we find the effective radius ratio, re,opt/re,UVr_{\rm e, opt}/r_{\rm e, UV}, is almost unity, 1.01−0.22+0.351.01^{+0.35}_{-0.22}, over z=4z=4-1010 with no signatures of past inside-out star formation such found at z∼0z\sim 0-22. There are no spatial offsets exceeding 3σ3σ between the optical and UV morphology centers in case of no mergers, indicative of major star-forming activity only found near a mass center of galaxies at z≳4z\gtrsim 4 probably experiencing the first phase of inside-out galaxy formation.

EMPRESS. VII. Ionizing Spectrum Shapes of Extremely Metal-Poor Galaxies: Uncovering the Origins of Strong HeII and the Impact on Cosmic Reionization

Strong high-ionization lines such as HeII of young galaxies are puzzling at high and low redshift. Although recent studies suggest the existence of non-thermal sources, whether their ionizing spectra can consistently explain multiple major emission lines remains a question. Here we derive the general shapes of the ionizing spectra for three local extremely metal-poor galaxies (EMPGs) that show strong HeIIλλ4686. We parameterize the ionizing spectra composed of a blackbody and power-law radiation mimicking various stellar and non-thermal sources. We use photoionization models for nebulae, and determine seven parameters of the ionizing spectra and nebulae by Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods, carefully avoiding systematics of abundance ratios. We obtain the general shapes of ionizing spectra explaining ∼10\sim 10 major emission lines within observational errors with smooth connections from observed X-ray and optical continua. We find that an ionizing spectrum of one EMPG has a blackbody-dominated shape, while the others have convex downward shapes at >13.6>13.6 eV, which indicate a diversity of the ionizing spectrum shapes. We confirm that the convex downward shapes are fundamentally different from ordinary stellar spectrum shapes, and that the spectrum shapes of these galaxies are generally explained by the combination of the stellar and ultra-luminous X-ray sources. Comparisons with stellar synthesis models suggest that the diversity of the spectrum shapes arises from differences in the stellar age. If galaxies at z≳6z\gtrsim 6 are similar to the EMPGs, high energy (>54.4>54.4 eV) photons of the non-stellar sources negligibly contribute to cosmic reionization due to relatively weak radiation.
