Inverse problems for discrete heat equations and random walks for a class of graphs

We study the inverse problem of determining a finite weighted graph $(X,E)$ from the source-to-solution map on a vertex subset $B\subset X$ for heat equations on graphs, where the time variable can be either discrete or continuous. We prove that this problem is equivalent to the discrete version of the inverse interior spectral problem, provided that there does not exist a nonzero eigenfunction of the weighted graph Laplacian vanishing identically on $B$. In particular, we consider inverse problems for discrete-time random walks on finite graphs. We show that under a novel geometric condition (called the Two-Points Condition), the graph structure and the transition matrix of the random walk can be uniquely recovered from the distributions of the first passing times on $B$, or from the observation on $B$ of one realization of the random walk.

Inverse problems for locally perturbed lattices -- Discrete Hamiltonian and quantum graph

We consider the inverse scattering problems for two types of Schrödinger operators on locally perturbed periodic lattices. For the discrete Hamiltonian, the knowledge of the S-matrix for all energies determines the graph structure and the coefficients of the Hamiltonian. For locally perturbed equilateral metric graphs, the knowledge of the S-matrix for all energies determines the graph structure.

Continuum limit for lattice Schrödinger operators

We study the behavior of solutions of the Helmholtz equation $(- Δ_{disc,h} - E)u_h = f_h$ on a periodic lattice as the mesh size $h$ tends to 0. Projecting to the eigenspace of a characteristic root $λ_h(ξ)$ and using a gauge transformation associated with the Dirac point, we show that the gauge transformed solution $u_h$ converges to that for the equation $(P(D_x) - E)v = g$ for a continuous model on ${\bf R}^d$, where $λ_h(ξ) \to P(ξ)$. For the case of the hexagonal and related lattices, {in a suitable energy region}, it converges to that for the Dirac equation. For the case of the square lattice, triangular lattice, {hexagonal lattice (in another energy region)} and subdivision of a square lattice, one can add a scalar potential, and the solution of the lattice Schr{ö}dinger equation $( - Δ_{disc,h} +V_{disc,h} - E)u_h = f_h$ converges to that of the continuum Schr{ö}dinger equation $(P(D_x) + V(x) -E)u = f$.

Inverse scattering on non-compact manifolds with general metric

The problems we address in this paper are the spectral theory and the inverse problems associated with Laplacians on non-compact Riemannian manifolds and more general manifolds admitting conic singularities. In particular, we study the inverse scattering problem where one observes the asymptotic behavior of the solutions of the Helmholtz equation on the manifold. These observations are analogous to Heisenberg's scattering matrix in quantum mechanics. We then show that the knowledge of the scattering matrix determines the topology and the metric of the manifold. In the paper we develop a unified approach to consider scattering problems on manifolds that can have very different type of infinities, such as regular hyperbolic ends, cusps, and cylindrical ends related to models encountered in the study of wave guides. We allow the manifold to have also conic singularities. Due to this, the studied class of manifolds include orbifolds. Such non-smooth structures arise in the study of the stability of inverse problems and of the geometrical collapse.

Global transformations preserving spectral data

We show the existence of a real analytic isomorphism between a space of impedance function $ρ$ of the Sturm-Liouville problem $- ρ^{-2}(ρ^2f')' + uf$ on $(0,1)$, where $u$ is a function of $ρ, ρ', ρ''$, and that of potential $p$ of the Schr{ö}dinger equation $- y'' + py$ on $(0,1)$, keeping their boundary conditions and spectral data. This mapping is associated with the classical Liouville transformation $f \to ρf$, and yields a global isomorphism between solutions to inverse problems for the Sturm-Liouville equations of the impedance form and those to the Schr{ö}dinger equations.

Introduction to spectral theory and inverse problem on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds

We study the spectral theory and inverse problem on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds. The main subjects are as follows: (1)Location of the essential spectrum. (2)Absence of eigenvalues embedded in the continuous spectrum. (3)Limiting absorption principle for the resolvent and the absolute continuity of the continuous spectrum. (4)Construction of the generalized Fourier transform. (5)symptotic completeness of time-dependent wave operators. (6)Characterization of the space of scattering solutions to the Helmhotz equation in terms of the generalized Fourier transform. (7)Asymptotic expansion of scattering solutions to the Helmholtz equation and the S-matrix. (8)Representation of the fundamental solution to the wave equation in the upper-half space model. (9)Radon transform and the propagation of singularities for the wave equation. Finally, we shall discuss the inverse problem. Namely (10)Identification of the Riemannian metric from the scattering matrix.

Conic singularities, generalized scattering matrix, and inverse scattering on asymptotically hyperbolic surfaces

We consider an inverse problem associated with some 2-dimensional non-compact surfaces with conical singularities, cusps and regular ends. Our motivating example is a Riemann surface $\mathcal M = Γ\backslash{\bf H}^2$ associated with a Fuchsian group of the 1st kind $Γ$ containing parabolic elements. $\mathcal M$ is then non-compact, and has a finite number of cusps and elliptic singular points, which is regarded as a hyperbolic orbifold. We introduce a class of Riemannian surfaces with conical singularities on its finite part, having cusps and regular ends at infinity, whose metric is asymptotically hyperbolic. By observing solutions of the Helmholtz equation at the cusp, we define a generalized S-matrix. We then show that this generalized S-matrix determines the Riemannian metric and the structure of conical singularities.

Inverse problems, trace formulae for discrete Schrödinger operators

We study discrete Schroedinger operators with compactly supported potentials on the square lattice. Constructing spectral representations and representing S-matrices by the generalized eigenfunctions, we show that the potential is uniquely reconstructed from the S-matrix of all energies. We also study the spectral shift function for the trace class potentials, and estimate the discrete spectrum in terms of the moments of the spectral shift function and the potential.

Trace formulas for Schrödinger operators from the view point of complex analysis

We consider the Schr{ö}dinger operator $-Δ+V(x)$ in $L^2({\bf R}^3)$ with a real short-range (integrable) potential $V$. Using the associated Fredholm determinant, we present new trace formulas, in particular, the ones in terms of resonances and eigenvalues only. We also derive expressions of the Dirichlet integral, and the scattering phase. The proof is based on the change of view points for the above mentioned problems from the operator theory to the complex analytic (entire) function theory.

Gauge Equivalence and Inverse Scattering for Aharonov-Bohm Effect

We consider the Aharonov-Bohm effect for the Schroedinger operator and the related inverse problem in an exterior domain the 2-dim. Euclidean space with Dirichlet boundary condition. We study the structure and asymptotics of generalized eigenfunctions and show that the scattering operator determines the domain and the Hamiltonian up to Gauge equivalence under the equal flux condition. We also show that the flux is determined by the scattering operator if the obstacle is convex.
