Restricted slowly growing digits for infinite iterated function systems

For an infinite iterated function system $\mathbf{f}$ on $[0,1]$ with an attractor $Λ(\mathbf{f})$ and for an infinite subset $D\subseteq \mathbb{N}$, consider the set \[ \mathbb E(\mathbf{f},D)= \{ x \in Λ(\mathbf{f}): a_n(x)\in D \text{ for all }n\in\mathbb N \text{ and }\lim_{n\to\infty} a_n=\infty\}. \] For a function $φ:\mathbb{N}\to [\min D, \infty)$ such that $φ(n)\to\infty$ as $n\to\infty$, we compute the Hausdorff dimension of the set $$ S(\mathbf{f},D,φ) = \left\{ x\in \E(\mathbf{f},D) : a_n(x)\leq φ(n) \text{ for all } n\in\mathbb N \right\}. $$ We prove that the Hausdorff dimension stays the same no matter how slowly the function $φ$ grows. One of the consequences of our result is the recent work of Takahasi (2023), which only dealt with regular continued fraction expansions. We further extend our result to slowly growing products of (not necessarily consecutive) digits.

Distribution of cycles for one-dimensional random dynamical systems

We consider an independently identically distributed random dynamical system generated by finitely many, non-uniformly expanding Markov interval maps with a finite number of branches. Assuming a topologically mixing condition and the uniqueness of equilibrium state for the associated skew product map, we establish a samplewise (quenched) almost-sure level-2 weighted equidistribution of "random cycles", with respect to a natural stationary measure as the periods of the cycles tend to infinity. This result implies an analogue of Bowen's theorem on periodic orbits of topologically mixing Axiom A diffeomorphisms. We also prove another almost-sure convergence theorem, as well as an averaged (annealed) theorem that is related to semigroup actions. We apply our results to the random $β$-expansion of real numbers, and obtain almost-sure convergences of average digital quantities in random $β$-expansions of random cycles that do not follow from the application of the ergodic theorems of Birkhoff or Kakutani. Our main results are applicable to random dynamical systems generated by finitely many maps with common neutral fixed points.

Heterochaos baker maps and the Dyck system: maximal entropy measures and a mechanism for the breakdown of entropy approachability

We introduce two parametrized families of piecewise affine maps on $[0,1]^2$ and $[0,1]^3$, as generalizations of the heterochaos baker maps which were introduced and investigated in [Y. Saiki, H. Takahasi, J. A. Yorke, Nonlinearity, 34 (2021), 5744--5761] as minimal models of the unstable dimension variability in multidimensional dynamical systems. We show that natural coding spaces of these maps coincide with the Dyck system that has come from the theory of languages. Based on this coincidence, we start to develop a complementary analysis on their invariant measures. As a first attempt, we show the existence of two ergodic measures of maximal entropy for the generalized heterochaos baker maps. We also clarify a mechanism for the breakdown of entropy approachability.

Mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages for non-uniformly expanding one-dimensional Markov maps with countably many branches

For a Markov map of an interval or the circle with countably many branches and finitely many neutral periodic points, we establish conditional variational formulas for the mixed multifractal spectra of Birkhoff averages of countably many observables, in terms of the Hausdorff dimension of invariant probability measures. Using our results, we are able to exhibit new fractal-geometric results for backward continued fraction expansions of real numbers, answering in particular a question of Pollicott. Moreover, we establish formulas for multi-cusp winding spectra for the Bowen-Series maps associated with finitely generated free Fuchsian groups with parabolic elements.

Removal of phase transition of the Chebyshev quadratic and thermodynamics of Hénon-like maps near the first bifurcation

We treat a problem at the interface of dynamical systems and equilibrium statistical physics. It is well-known that the geometric pressure function $$t\in\mathbb R\mapsto \sup_μ\left\{h_μ(T_2)-t\int\log |dT_2(x)|dμ(x)\right\}$$ of the Chebyshev quadratic map $T_2(x)=1-2x^2$ $(x\in\mathbb R)$ is not differentiable at $t=-1$. We show that this phase transition can be "removed", by an arbitrarily small singular perturbation of the map $T_2$ into Hénon-like diffeomorphisms. A proof of this result relies on an elaboration of the well-known inducing techniques adapted to Hénon-like dynamics near the first bifurcation.

Birkhoff spectrum for Hénon-like maps at the first bifurcation

We effect a multifractal analysis for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. We decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of Birkhoff averages of continuous functions, and derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures.

Lyapunov spectrum for Hénon-like maps at the first bifurcation

For a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we effect a multifractal analysis, i.e., decompose the set of non wandering points on the unstable manifold into level sets of an unstable Lyapunov exponent, and give a partial description of the Lyapunov spectrum which encodes this decomposition. We derive a formula for the Hausdorff dimension of the level sets in terms of the entropy and unstable Lyapunov exponent of invariant probability measures, and show the continuity of the Lyapunov spectrum. We also show that the set of points for which the unstable Lyapunov exponents do not exist carries a full Hausdorff dimension.

Equilibrium measures at temperature zero for Hénon-like maps at the first bifurcation

We develop a thermodynamic formalism for a strongly dissipative Hénon-like map at the first bifurcation parameter at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. For any $t\in\mathbb R$ we prove the existence of an invariant Borel probability measure which minimizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction. Under a mild condition, we show that any accumulation point of these measures as $t\to+\infty$ minimizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent. We also show that the equilibrium measures converge as $t\to-\infty$ to a Dirac measure which maximizes the unstable Lyapunov exponent.

Equilibrium measures for the Hénon map at the first bifurcation: uniqueness and geometric/statistical properties

For strongly dissipative Hénon maps at the first bifurcation where the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set, we establish a thermodynamic formalism, i.e., prove the existence and uniqueness of an invariant probability measure which maximizes the free energy associated with a non continuous geometric potential $-t\log J^u$, where $t\in\mathbb R$ is in a certain large interval and $J^u$ is the Jacobian in the unstable direction. We obtain geometric and statistical properties of these measures.

Prevalence of non-uniform hyperbolicity at the first bifurcation of Hénon-like families

We consider the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps in the plane, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of homoclinic or heteroclinic tangencies inside the limit set. In [Takahasi H.: Commun. Math. Phys. {\bf 312} 37-85 (2012)], it was proved that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under forward iteration. For these parameters, we show that all Lyapunov exponents of all invariant ergodic Borel probability measures are uniformly bounded away from zero, uniformly over all the parameters.

Equilibrium measures for the Hénon map at the first bifurcation

We study the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon maps, at the first bifurcation parameter where the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. We prove the existence of an equilibrium measure which minimizes the free energy associated with the non continuous potential $-t\log J^u$, where $t\in\mathbb R$ is in a certain interval of the form $(-\infty,t_0)$, $t_0>1$ and $J^u$ denotes the Jacobian in the unstable direction.

Large deviation principle for Benedicks-Carleson quadratic maps

Since the pioneering works of Jakobson and Benedicks & Carleson and others, it has been known that a positive measure set of quadratic maps admit invariant probability measures absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue. These measures allow one to statistically predict the asymptotic fate of Lebesgue almost every initial condition. Estimating fluctuations of empirical distributions before they settle to equilibrium requires a fairly good control over large parts of the phase space. We use the sub-exponential slow recurrence condition of Benedicks & Carleson to build induced Markov maps of arbitrarily small scale and associated towers, to which the absolutely continuous measures can be lifted. These various lifts together enable us to obtain a control of recurrence that is sufficient to establish a level 2 large deviation principle, for the absolutely continuous measures. This result encompasses dynamics far from equilibrium, and thus significantly extends presently known local large deviations results for quadratic maps.

Nonuniformly expanding 1d maps with logarithmic singularities

For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, we construct a positive measure set of parameters corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly expanding behavior. This implies the existence of "chaotic" dynamics in dissipative homoclinic tangles in periodically perturbed differential equations.

preprint2010arXiv

Critical points for surface maps and the Benedicks-Carleson theorem

We give an alternative proof of the Benedicks-Carleson theorem on the existence of strange attractors in Hénon-like families in the plane. To bypass a huge inductive argument, we introduce an induction-free explicit definition of dynamically critical points. The argument is sufficiently general and in particular applies to the case of non-invertible maps as well. It naturally raises the question of an intrinsic characterization of dynamically critical points for dissipative surface maps.

Prevalent dynamics at the first bifurcation of Henon-like families

We study the dynamics of strongly dissipative Hénon-like maps, around the first bifurcation parameter $a^*$ at which the uniform hyperbolicity is destroyed by the formation of tangencies inside the limit set. We prove that $a^*$ is a full Lebesgue density point of the set of parameters for which Lebesgue almost every initial point diverges to infinity under positive iteration. A key ingredient is that $a^*$ corresponds to "non-recurrence of every critical point", reminiscent of Misiurewicz parameters in one-dimensional dynamics. Adapting on the one hand Benedicks & Carleson's parameter exclusion argument, we construct a set of "good parameters" having $a^*$ as a full density point. Adapting Benedicks & Viana's volume control argument on the other, we analyze Lebesgue typical dynamics corresponding to these good parameters.

Statistical properties of nonuniformly expanding 1d maps with logarithmic singularities

For a certain parametrized family of maps on the circle, with critical points and logarithmic singularities where derivatives blow up to infinity, a positive measure set of parameters was constructed in [19], corresponding to maps which exhibit nonuniformly hyperbolic behavior. For these parameters, we prove the existence of absolutely continuous invariant measures with good statistical properties, such as exponential decay of correlations. Combining our construction with the logarithmic nature of the singularities, we obtain a positive variance in Central Limit Theorem, for any nonconstant Hölder continuous observable.

Computable conditions for the occurrence of non-uniform hyperbolicity in families of one-dimensional maps

We formulate and prove a Jakobson-Benedicks-Carleson type theorem on the occurence of nonuniform hyperbolicity (stochastic dynamics) in families of one-dimensional maps, based on "computable starting conditions" and providing "explicit, computable," lower bounds for the measure of the set of selected parameters. As a first application of our results we show that the set of parameters corresponding to maps in the quadratic family f_{a}(x) = x^{2}-a which have an absolutely continuous invariant probability measure is at least 10^-5000 !
