One-particle irreducible Wilson action in the gradient flow exact renormalization group formalism

We define a one-particle irreducible (1PI) Wilson action in the gradient flow exact renormalization group (GFERG) formalism as the Legendre transform of a Wilson action. We consider quantum electrodynamics in particular, and show that the GFERG flow equation preserves the invariance of the 1PI Wilson action (excluding the gauge-fixing term) under the \emph{conventional\/} $U(1)$ gauge transformation. This is in contrast to the invariance of the original Wilson action under a modified $U(1)$ gauge transformation. The global chiral transformation also takes the \emph{conventional\/} form for the 1PI Wilson action. Despite the complexity of the GFERG flow equation, the conventional form of the gauge and global chiral transformations may allow us to introduce a non-perturbative Ansatz for gauge and chiral invariant 1PI Wilson actions.

Gradient flow exact renormalization group

The gradient flow bears a close resemblance to the coarse graining, the guiding principle of the renormalization group (RG). In the case of scalar field theory, a precise connection has been made between the gradient flow and the RG flow of the Wilson action in the exact renormalization group (ERG) formalism. By imitating the structure of this connection, we propose an ERG differential equation that preserves manifest gauge invariance in Yang--Mills theory. Our construction in continuum theory can be extended to lattice gauge theory.

Analytic form of the effective potential in the large N limit of a real scalar theory in four dimensions

We give the large N limit of the effective potential for the O(N) linear sigma model in four dimensions in terms of the Lambert W function. The effective potential is fully consistent with the renormalization group, and it admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of a small positive coupling parameter. Careful consideration of the UV cutoff present in the model validates the physics of the large N limit.

Gauge invariant composite operators of QED in the exact renormalization group formalism

Using the exact renormalization group (ERG) formalism, we study the gauge invariant composite operators in QED. Gauge invariant composite operators are introduced as infinitesimal changes of the gauge invariant Wilson action. We examine the dependence on the gauge fixing parameter of both the Wilson action and gauge invariant composite operators. After defining ``gauge fixing parameter independence,'' we show that any gauge independent composite operators can be made ``gauge fixing parameter independent'' by appropriate normalization. As an application, we give a concise but careful proof of the Adler-Bardeen non-renormalization theorem for the axial anomaly in an arbitrary covariant gauge by extending the original proof by A. Zee.

Anomalies in the ERG Approach

The antifield formalism adapted in the exact renormalization group is found to be useful for describing a system with some symmetry, especially the gauge symmetry. In the formalism, the vanishing of the quantum master operator implies the presence of a symmetry. The QM operator satisfies a simple algebraic relation that will be shown to be related to the Wess-Zumino condition for anomalies. We also explain how an anomaly contributes to the QM operator.

Phase structure of a three-dimensional Yukawa model

We use the method of the exact renormalization group to study the renormalization group flows of an O(N) invariant Yukawa model in three dimensional Euclidean space consisting of one real scalar and N real spinor fields. We obtain a phase structure similar to that of the N-vector model with cubic anisotropy, possessing a region of parameters exhibiting a first order transition. The particular case with one real fermion (N=1) belongs to the same universality class as the Wess-Zumino model with one supersymmetry. For the critical exponents of the Wilson-Fisher type fixed points, our 1-loop approximations are generally consistent with the results of previous studies.

An elementary proof of the non-renormalization theorem for the Wess-Zumino model

Using the exact renormalization group (ERG) differential equation, we give an elementary proof of the non-renormalization theorem for the Wess-Zumino model. We introduce auxiliary fields to linearize the supersymmetry transformation, but we do not rely on the superfield techniques. We give sufficient background material on the Wilson action and the ERG formalism to make the paper self-contained.

Realization of symmetry in the ERG approach to quantum field theory

We review the use of the exact renormalization group for realization of symmetry in renormalizable field theories. The review consists of three parts. In part I (sects. 2,3,4), we start with the perturbative construction of a renormalizable field theory as a solution of the exact renormalization group (ERG) differential equation. We show how to characterize renormalizability by an appropriate asymptotic behavior of the solution for a large momentum cutoff. Renormalized parameters are introduced to control the asymptotic behavior. In part II (sects. 5--9), we introduce two formalisms to incorporate symmetry: one by imposing the Ward-Takahashi identity, and another by imposing the generalized Ward-Takahashi identity via sources that generate symmetry transformations. We apply the two formalisms to concrete models such as QED, YM theories, and the Wess-Zumino model in four dimensions, and the O(N) non-linear sigma model in two dimensions. We end this part with calculations of the abelian axial and chiral anomalies. In part III (sects. 10,11), we overview the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism adapted to the Wilson action of a bare theory with a UV cutoff. We provide a few appendices to give details and extensions that can be omitted for the understanding of the main text. The last appendix is a quick summary for the reader's convenience.

Ward-Takahashi identity for Yang-Mills theory in the Exact Renormalization Group

We give a functional derivation of the Ward-Takahashi identity for Yang-Mills theory in the framework of the exact renormalization group. The identity realizes non-abelian gauge symmetry nontrivially despite the presence of a momentum cutoff. The cutoff deforms the gauge transformation by introducing composite operators. In our functional method, which is an extension of the method used in our previous work on QED, these composite operators are expressed in terms of the Wilson action that depends on both a UV cutoff and an IR cutoff.

Off-shell renormalization of the abelian Higgs model in the unitary gauge

We discuss the off-shell renormalization properties of the abelian Higgs model in the unitary gauge. The model is not renormalizable according to the usual power counting rules. In this paper, however, we show that with a proper choice of interpolating fields for the massive photon and the Higgs particle, their off-shell Green functions can be renormalized. An analysis of the nature of the extra singularities in the unitary gauge is given, and a recipe for the off-shell renormalization is provided.
