Construction and Characterisation of Stationary and Mass-Stationary Random Measures on ${\mathbb R}^d$

Mass-stationarity means that the origin is at a typical location in the mass of a random measure. It is an intrinsic characterisation of Palm versions with respect to stationary random measures. Stationarity is the special case when the random measure is Lebesgue measure. The paper presents constructions of stationary and mass-stationary versions through change of measure and change of origin. Further, the paper considers characterisations of mass-stationarity by distributional invariance under preserving shifts agains stationary independent backgrounds.

Convergence in Density in Finite Time Windows and the Skorohod Representation

According to the Dudley-Wichura extension of the Skorohod representation theorem, convergence in distribution to a limit in a separable set is equivalent to the existence of a coupling with elements converging a.s. in the metric. A density analogue of this theorem says that a sequence of probability densities on a general measurable space has a probability density as a pointwise lower limit if and only if there exists a coupling with elements converging a.s. in the discrete metric. In this paper the discrete-metric theorem is extended to stochastic processes considered in a widening time window. The extension is then used to prove the separability version of the Skorohod representation theorem.

On the Limiting Ratio of Current Age to Total Life for Null Recurrent Renewal Processes

If the inter-arrival time distribution of a renewal process is regularly varying with index $α\in\left( 0,1\right) $ (i.e. the inter-arrival times have infinite mean) and if $A\left( t\right) $ is the associated age process at time $t$. Then we show that if $C\left( t\right) $ is the length of the current cycle at time $t$, \[ A\left( t\right) /C\left( t\right) \Rightarrow U^{1/α}, \] where $U$ is $U\left( 0,1\right) $. This extends a classical result in renewal theory in the finite mean case which indicates that the limit is $U\left( 0,1\right) $.

Unbiased shifts of Brownian motion

Let $B=(B_t)_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}$ be a two-sided standard Brownian motion. An unbiased shift of $B$ is a random time $T$, which is a measurable function of $B$, such that $(B_{T+t}-B_T)_{t\in {\mathbb{R}}}$ is a Brownian motion independent of $B_T$. We characterise unbiased shifts in terms of allocation rules balancing mixtures of local times of $B$. For any probability distribution $ν$ on ${\mathbb{R}}$ we construct a stopping time $T\ge0$ with the above properties such that $B_T$ has distribution $ν$. We also study moment and minimality properties of unbiased shifts. A crucial ingredient of our approach is a new theorem on the existence of allocation rules balancing stationary diffuse random measures on ${\mathbb{R}}$. Another new result is an analogue for diffuse random measures on ${\mathbb{R}}$ of the cycle-stationarity characterisation of Palm versions of stationary simple point processes.

What is typical?

Let $ξ$ be a random measure on a locally compact second countable topological group and let $X$ be a random element in a measurable space on which the group acts. In the compact case, we give a natural definition of the concept that the origin is a typical location for $X$ in the mass of $ξ$, and prove that when this holds the same is true on sets placed uniformly at random around the origin. This new result motivates an extension of the concept of typicality to the locally compact case where it coincides with the concept of mass-stationarity. We describe recent developments in Palm theory where these ideas play a central role.
