Feasibility of Simulated Annealing Tomography

Simulated annealing tomography (SAT) is a simple iterative image reconstruction technique which can yield a superior reconstruction compared with filtered back-projection (FBP). However, the very high computational cost of iteratively calculating discrete Radon transform (DRT) has limited the feasibility of this technique. In this paper, we propose an approach based on the pre-calculated intersection lengths array (PILA) which helps to remove the step of computing DRT in the simulated annealing procedure and speed up SAT by over 300 times. The enhancement of convergence speed of the reconstruction process using the best of multiple-estimate (BoME) strategy is introduced. The performance of SAT under different conditions and in comparison with other methods is demonstrated by numerical experiments.

Theoretical and experimental study of a new single-coil superconducting miniundulator

The first pre-prototype of a single-coil superconducting miniundulator has been built and studied. Its basic specifications include 10 main periods and two end compensation periods, a period length of 7 mm, and a gap of 2 mm. The design is based on a racetrack-like coil configuration that is subsequently compressed to form the gap region with the spatially alternating currents flowing perpendicularly to the electron beam above and below the midplane. Operation up to an excitation current slightly beyond 400 A before quenching resulted in a peak magnetic flux density on axis of about 1 T and an undulator parameter of K about 0.65.

Experimental demonstration of a free space cylindrical cloak without superluminal propagation

We experimentally demonstrated an alternative approach of invisibility cloaking that can combine technical advantages of all current major cloaking strategies in a unified manner and thus can solve bottlenecks of individual strategies. A broadband cylindrical invisibility cloak in free space is designed based on scattering cancellation (the approach of previous plasmonic cloaking), and implemented with anisotropic metamaterials (a fundamental property of singular-transformation cloaks). Particularly, non-superluminal propagation of electromagnetic waves, a superior advantage of non-Euclidian-transformation cloaks constructed with complex branch cuts, is inherited in this design, and thus is the reason of its relatively broad bandwidth. This demonstration provides the possibility for future practical implementation of cloaking devices at large scales in free space.
