Discrete Affine Surfaces based on Quadrangular Meshes

In this paper we are interested in defining affine structures on discrete quadrangular surfaces of the affine three-space. We introduce, in a constructive way, two classes of such surfaces, called respectively indefinite and definite surfaces. The underlying meshes for indefinite surfaces are asymptotic nets satisfying a non-degeneracy condition, while the underlying meshes for definite surfaces are non-degenerate conjugate nets satisfying a certain natural condition. In both cases we associate to any of these nets several discrete affine invariant quantities: a metric, a normal and a co-normal vector fields, and a mean curvature. Moreover, we derive structural and compatibility equations which are shown to be necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a discrete quadrangular surface with a given affine structure.

Codimension two marginally trapped submanifolds in Robertson-Walker spaces

We give a local characterization of codimension two submanifolds which are marginally trapped in Robertson-Walker spaces, in terms of an algebraic equation to be satisfied by the height function. We prove the existence of a large number of local solutions. We refine the description in the case of curves with null acceleration in three-dimensional spaces Robertson-Walker spaces, and in the case of codimension two submanifolds whose second fundamental form is null

Lagrangian submanifolds in para-complex Euclidean space

We address the study of some curvature equations for distinguished submanifolds in para-Kähler geometry. We first observe that a para-complex submanifold of a para-Kähler manifold is minimal. Next we describe the extrinsic geometry of Lagrangian submanifolds in the para-complex Euclidean space D^n and discuss a number of examples, such as graphs and normal bundles. We also characterize those Lagrangian surfaces of D^2 which are minimal and have indefinite metric. Finally we describe the Lagrangian self-similar solutions of the Mean Curvature Flow which are SO(n)-equivariant.

On the affine Gauss maps of submanifolds of Euclidean space

It is well known that the space of oriented lines of Euclidean space has a natural symplectic structure. Moreover, given an immersed, oriented hypersurface S the set of oriented lines that cross S orthogonally is a Lagrangian submanifold. Conversely, if \bar{S} an n-dimensional family of oriented lines is Lagrangian, there exists, locally, a 1-parameter family of immersed, oriented, parallel hypersurfaces S_t whose tangent spaces cross orthogonally the lines of \bar{S}. The purpose of this paper is to generalize these facts to higher dimension: to any point x of a submanifold S of R^m of dimension n and co-dimension k=m-n, we may associate the affine k-space normal to S at x. Conversely, given an n-dimensional family \bar{S} of affine k-spaces of R^m, we provide certain conditions granting the local existence of a family of n-dimensional submanifolds S which cross orthogonally the affine k-spaces of \bar{S}. We also define a curvature tensor for a general family of affine spaces of R^m which generalizes the curvature of a submanifold, and, in the case of a 2-dimensional family of 2-planes in R^4, show that it satisfies a generalized Gauss-Bonnet formula.

Hopf Hypersurfaces in pseudo-Riemannian complex and para-complex space forms

The study of real hypersurfaces in pseudo-Riemannian complex space forms and para-complex space forms, which are the pseudo-Riemannian generalizations of the complex space forms, is addressed. It is proved that there are no umbilic hypersurfaces, nor real hypersurfaces with parallel shape operator in such spaces. Denoting by $J$ be the complex or para-complex structure of a pseudo-complex or para-complex space form respectively, a non-degenerate hypersurface of such space with unit normal vector field $N$ is said to be \em Hopf \em if the tangent vector field $JN$ is a principal direction. It is proved that if a hypersurface is Hopf, then the corresponding principal curvature (the \em Hopf \em curvature) is constant. It is also observed that in some cases a Hopf hypersurface must be, locally, a tube over a complex (or para-complex) submanifold, thus generalizing previous results of Cecil, Ryan and Montiel.

Surfaces with one constant principal curvature in three-dimensional space forms

We study surfaces with one constant principal curvature in Riemannian and Lorentzian three-dimensional space forms. Away from umbilic points they are characterized as one-parameter foliations by curves of constant curvature, each of these curves being centered at a point of a regular curve and contained in its normal plane. In some cases, a kind of trichotomy phenomenon is observed: the curves of the foliations may be circles, hyperbolas or horocycles, depending of whether the constant principal curvature is respectively larger, smaller of equal to one (not necessarily in this order). We describe explicitly some examples showing that there do exist complete surfaces with one constant principal curvature enjoying both umbilic and non-umbilic points.

A canonical structure on the tangent bundle of a pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold

It is a classical fact that the cotangent bundle $T^* \M$ of a differentiable manifold $\M$ enjoys a canonical symplectic form $Ω^*$. If $(\M,\j,g,ω)$ is a pseudo-Kähler or para-Kähler $2n$-dimensional manifold, we prove that the tangent bundle $T\M$ also enjoys a natural pseudo-Kähler or para-Kähler structure $(\J,\G,Ω)$, where $Ω$ is the pull-back by $g$ of $Ω^*$ and $\G$ is a pseudo-Riemannian metric with neutral signature $(2n,2n)$. We investigate the curvature properties of the pair $(\J,\G)$ and prove that: $\G$ is scalar-flat, is not Einstein unless $g$ is flat, has nonpositive (resp.\ nonnegative) Ricci curvature if and only if $g$ has nonpositive (resp.\ nonnegative) Ricci curvature as well, and is locally conformally flat if and only if $n=1$ and $g$ has constant curvature, or $n>2$ and $g$ is flat. We also check that (i) the holomorphic sectional curvature of $(\J,\G)$ is not constant unless $g$ is flat, and (ii) in $n=1$ case, that $\G$ is never anti-self-dual, unless conformally flat.

Hamiltonian stability of Hamiltonian minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in pseudo- and para-Kähler manifolds

Let L be a Lagrangian submanifold of a pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold which is H-minimal, i.e. a critical point of the volume functional restricted to Hamiltonian variations. We derive the second variation of the volume of L with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We apply this formula to several cases. In particular we observe that a minimal Lagrangian submanifold L in a Ricci-flat pseudo- or para-Kähler manifold is H-stable, i.e. its second variation is definite and L therefore a local extremizer of the volume with respect to Hamiltonian variations. We also give a stability criterion for spacelike minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in para-Kähler manifolds, similar to Oh's stability criterion for minimal Lagrangian manifolds in Kähler-Einstein manifolds. Finally, we determine the H-stability of a series of examples of H-minimal Lagrangian submanifolds: the product of n circles of arbitrary radii in complex space C^n is H-unstable with respect to any indefinite flat Hermitian metric, while the product of n hyperbolas in para-complex vector space D^n is H-stable for n=1,2 and H-unstable for n > 2. Recently, minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the space of geodesics of three-dimensional space forms have been characterized; on the other hand, a class of H-minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the tangent bundle of a Riemannian, oriented surface has been identified. We discuss the H-stability of all these examples.

Minimal Lagrangian submanifolds in indefinite complex space

Consider the complex linear space C^n endowed with the canonical pseudo-Hermitian form of signature (2p,2(n-p)). This yields both a pseudo-Riemannian and a symplectic structure on C^n. We prove that those submanifolds which are both Lagrangian and minimal with respect to these structures minimize the volume in their Lagrangian homology class. We also describe several families of minimal Lagrangian submanifolds. In particular, we characterize the minimal Lagrangian surfaces in C^2 endowed with its natural neutral metric and the equivariant minimal Lagrangian submanifolds of C^n with arbitrary signature.

Spaces of geodesics of pseudo-Riemannian space forms and normal congruences of hypersurfaces

We describe natural Kähler or para-Kähler structures of the spaces of geodesics of pseudo-Riemannian space forms and relate the local geometry of hypersurfaces of space forms to that of their normal congruences, or Gauss maps, which are Lagrangian submanifolds. The space of geodesics L(S^{n+1}_{p,1}) of a pseudo-Riemannian space form S^{n+1}_{p,1} of non-vanishing curvature enjoys a Kähler or para-Kähler structure (J,G) which is in addition Einstein. Moreover, in the three-dimensional case, L(S^{n+1}_{p,1}) enjoys another Kähler or para-Kähler structure (J',G') which is scalar flat. The normal congruence of a hypersurface s of S^{n+1}_{p,1} is a Lagrangian submanifold \bar{s} of L(S^{n+1}_{p,1}), and we relate the local geometries of s and \bar{s}. In particular \bar{s} is totally geodesic if and only if s has parallel second fundamental form. In the three-dimensional case, we prove that \bar{s} is minimal with respect to the Einstein metric G (resp. with respect to the scalar flat metric G') if and only if it is the normal congruence of a minimal surface s (resp. of a surface s with parallel second fundamental form); moreover \bar{s} is flat if and only if s is Weingarten.

On the three-dimensional Blaschke-Lebesgue problem

The width of a closed convex subset of Euclidean space is the distance between two parallel supporting planes. The Blaschke-Lebesgue problem consists of minimizing the volume in the class of convex sets of fixed constant width and is still open in dimension n > 2. In this paper we describe a necessary condition that the minimizer of the Blaschke-Lebesgue must satisfy in dimension n=3: we prove that the smooth components of the boundary of the minimizer have their smaller principal curvature constant, and therefore are either spherical caps or pieces of tubes (canal surfaces).
