Non-Equatorial Deflection of Light due to Kerr-Newman Black Hole: A Material Medium Approach

We explored the effect of space-time geometry on the trajectory of light rays in the context of a charged, rotating black hole. We derived an analytical expression for the deflection of light rays in Kerr-Newman space-time geometry, using a material medium approach, on non-equatorial plane. From this deflection angle expression it is evident that the charge and rotation of the black hole can affect the light rays' paths. Additionally, we calculated the refractive index of light rays by treating space-time as a medium. We demonstrated how the rotation parameter and charge influence the refractive index and hence the deflection angle of light rays. For Kerr-Newman geometry, the deflection angle decreases with increasing charge when the rotation parameter is held constant. Conversely, for a constant charge, the deflection angle increases with the rotation parameter for prograde and decreases for retrograde trajectories. Applying both factors results in the deflection angle being lower than that of the Schwarzschild geometry. Non-equatorial study of the deflection angle reveals that it is maximum in the equatorial plane than in the pole. The frame-dragging effects in the Kerr-Newman field were taken into account to calculate the velocity of light rays, leading to the determination of the refractive index in this field geometry. This study concludes that depending on the values of the rotation parameter and charge parameter both prograde and retrograde trajectories coincide, resulting in the conclusion that at some point the frame dragging effect is the same for prograde and retrograde motion. Also, the frame dragging increases towards poles for retrograde trajectories while decreasing for prograde trajectories, and these nontrivial nature results because of the interplay between charge and rotation.

Non-Monotonic Enhancement of the Magnetic Penrose Process in Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson Spacetime and its Implication for Electron Acceleration

We studied the magnetic Penrose process (MPP) in the Kerr-Bertotti-Robinson (KBR) spacetime, an exact rotating electrovacuum solution describing a black hole (BH) immersed in an intrinsic, uniform electromagnetic field. We analyze the behavior of charged particles in this geometry and find that the spacetime structure itself responds non-monotonically to the background magnetic field $B$. Specifically, both the event horizon and the static limit surface first expand as $B$ increases, reach a maximum size at an intermediate field strength, and then contract toward the extremal limit. Although the ergoregion itself shrinks monotonically with $B$, this structural feature gives rise to a pronounced non-monotonic dependence of the energy extraction efficiency on the magnetic field $B$, i.e., the efficiency initially rises, attains a maximum value, and subsequently falls as the extremal condition is approached. This contrasts sharply with the monotonic trends usually associated with magnetic enhancements in the Kerr geometry. We further explore an astrophysical application of the MPP by estimating the maximum energy of electrons escaping from the ergoregion of the KBR BH. Modeling neutron beta decay occurring near the event horizon, we derive an analytical expression for the energy gained by electrons accelerated by the magnetic field. Applying our results to the supermassive BH at the Galactic center, $\mathrm{SgrA}^*$, we find that electrons can be accelerated up to energies of $\sim 10^{15}\,\mathrm{eV}$ for realistic values of the spin and magnetic field. Although these energies exceed the observed upper range of cosmic-ray electrons, radiative losses such as synchrotron emission and inverse-Compton scattering can efficiently reduce them to the observed $\mathrm{TeV}$ scale.

Chaos motion and Periastron precession of spinning test particles moving in the vicinage of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by a quintessence matter field

In the present work, our main objective is to investigate the orbits of spinning test particles around a Schwarzschild black hole under the influence of a quintessence matter field (SQBH). We begin with the dynamics of the spinning test particles around SQBH which is governed by the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon (MPD) equations under the pole-dipole approximation, where the gravitational field and the higher multipoles of the particle are neglected. Depending on the types of saddle points, the effective potential are classified and the possibility of chaotic orbits is discussed. The inner most stable circular orbits (ISCOs) of the spinning particle around SQBH are addressed, as are the effects of the parameters $S$ (particles' spin) and $ε$ (equation of state parameter). Later, Periastron precession is investigated up to the first-order spin correction for a spinning particle moving in nearly circular orbits around SQBH. It is noted that the addition of particle's spin revamps the results obtained for the non-spinning particles and also articulates the some interesting observational properties of the SQBH. Additionally, we discuss the ramifications of employing first-order spin corrections for analysing ISCOs, as well as compare our results to the Schwarzschild black hole to ensure that they are consistent in the limit when equation of state parameter $ε=-1/3$ and normalization factor $α\to 0$.

Geodesic stability and quasinormal modes of non-commutative Schwarzschild black hole employing Lyapunov exponent

We study the dynamics of test particle and stability of circular geodesics in the gravitational field of a non-commutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole spacetime (NCSBH). The coordinate time Lyapunov exponent ($λ_{c}$) is crucial to investigate the stability of equatorial circular geodesics of massive and massless test particles. The stability or instability of circular orbits are discussed by analysing the variation of Lyapunov exponent with radius of these orbits for different values of non-commutative parameter ($α$). In the case of null circular orbits, the instability exponent is calculated and presented to discuss the instability of null circular orbits. Further, by relating parameters corresponding to null circular geodesics (i.e. angular frequency and Lyapunov exponent), the quasinormal modes (QNMs) for a massless scalar field perturbation in the eikonal approximation are evaluated, and also visualised by relating the real and imaginary parts. The nature of scalar field potential, by varying the non-commutative parameter ($α$) and angular momentum of perturbation ($l$), are also observed and discussed.

Shadow and weak gravitational lensing of a rotating regular black hole in a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in the presence of plasma

The null geodesics of the regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole in a non-minimally coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills theory surrounded by a plasma medium is studied. The effect of magnetic charge and Yang-Mills parameter on the effective potential and radius of photon orbits has investigated. We then study the shadow of a regular and rotating magnetically charged black hole along with the observables in presence of the plasma medium. The presence of plasma medium affects the apparent size of the shadow of a regular rotating black hole in comparison to vacuum case. Variation of shadow radius and deformation parameter with Yang-Mills and plasma parameter has examined. Furthermore, the deflection angle of the massless test particles in weak field approximation around this black hole spacetime in presence of homogeneous plasma medium is also investigated. Finally, we have compared the obtained results with Kerr-Newman and Schwarzschild black hole solutions in general relativity (GR).

Stability analysis of circular orbits around a traversable wormhole with massless conformally coupled scalar field

We study the stability of circular orbits in the background of a traversable wormhole (TWH) spacetime obtained as a solution of Einstein's field equations coupled conformally to a massless scalar field. The Lyapunov stability approach is employed to determine the stability of circular orbits (timelike and null) of non-spinning test particles around a TWH spacetime. In the case of timelike geodesics, the particle is confined to move in four different types of effective potentials depending on various values of the angular momentum L with both centrifugal and gravitational part. The effective potential for null geodesics consists of only a centrifugal part. Further, we characterize each fixed point according to its Lyapunov stability, and thus classify the circular orbits at the fixed point into stable center and unstable saddle points by depicting the corresponding phase-portraits.

Stability of circular geodesics in equatorial plane of Kerr spacetime

We analyze the stability of circular geodesics for timelike as well as null geodesics of the Kerr BH spacetime with rotation parameter on the equatorial plane by Lyapunov stability analysis. Also, we verify the results of stability by presenting the phase portrait for both timelike and null geodesics. Further, by reviewing the Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory, we analyze the Jacobi stability for Kerr spacetime and present a comparative study of the methods used for stability analysis of geodesics.

Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessential matter field as an accelerator for spinning particles

We study the collision of two massive particles with non-zero intrinsic spin moving in the equatorial plane in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessential matter field (SBHQ). For the quintessential matter equation of state (EOS) parameter, we assume three different values. It is shown that for collisions outside the event horizon, but very close to it, the centre-of-mass energy ($E_{\rm CM}$) can grow without bound if exactly one of the colliding particles is what we call near-critical, i.e., if its constants of motion are fine tuned such that the time component of its four-momentum becomes very small at the horizon. In all other cases, $E_{\rm CM}$ only diverges behind the horizon if we respect the Møller limit on the spin of the particles. We also discuss radial turning points and constraints resulting from the requirement of subluminal motion of the spinning particles.

Shear-free conditions of a Chaplygin-Gas-dominated universe

In this work, we revisit the shear-free conjecture of general relativity and show the violation of the well-known shear-free condition for perfect-fluid spacetimes. It had been shown in previous investigations that, in the general relativistic framework, the matter congruences of shear-free perfect fluid spacetimes should be either expansion-free or rotation-free. Our current investigation, however, indicates that a universe dominated by a Chaplygin gas can allow a simultaneous expansion and rotation of the fluid provided that certain non-trivial conditions, which we derive and describe below, are met. We also show that, in the appropriate limiting cases, our results reduce to the expected results of dust spacetimes which can only expand or rotate, but not both, at the same time.

Geodesic flows around charged black holes in two dimensions

We study the evolution of timelike geodesics for two dimensional black hole spacetimes arising in string theory and general theory of relativity by solving the Raychaudhuri equation for expansion scalar as an initial value problem. The possibility of geodesic focusing/defocusing is then examined accordingly with different settings of black hole parameters. In view of the geodesic focusing/defocusing, the critical value of expansion scalar is also calculated in each case. The effect of the charge and the cosmological constant on the evolution of expansion scalar for timelike geodesics is discussed in detail.

Geodesic motion in R- charged black hole space-times

We study the geodesic motion of massive and massless test particles in the background of a particular class of multiple charge black holes in gauged supergravity theories in D = 4. We have analysed the horizon structure along with the nature of the effective potentials for the case of four equal charges. In view of the corresponding effective potentials, we have discussed all the possible orbits in detail for different values of energy and angular momentum of the incoming test particles. The periods for one complete revolution of circular orbits and the advance of perihelion of the planetary orbit have also been investigated in greater detail for massive test particles. We have also discussed the time period of unstable circular motion and cone of avoidance of massless test particles in detail. All the corresponding results obtained for massive and massless test particles are then compared accordingly.

Geodesic Motion in Schwarzschild Spacetime Surrounded by Quintessence

We study the time-like geodesic congruences, in the space-time geometry of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessence. The nature of effective potential along with the structure of the possible orbits for test particles in view of the different values of quintessence parameter are analysed in detail. %wherever possible it is done analytically otherwise numerically. An increase in quintessence parameter is seen to set the particles from farther distance into motion around black hole. The effect of quintessence parameter is investigated analytically wherever possible otherwise we perform the numerical analysis to probe the structure of possible orbits. It is observed that there exist a number of different possible orbits for a test particle in case of non-radial geodesics, such as circular (stable as well as unstable) bound orbits, radially plunge and fly-by orbits, whereas no bound orbits exist in case of radial geodesics. Using the geodesic deviation equations, we obtain the corresponding deviation vector and find that the quintessence assists the divergence of neighbouring geodesics in both the radial and transverse directions.

Null Geodesics in a Magnetically Charged Stringy Black Hole Spacetime

We study the geodesic motion of massless test particles in the background of a magnetic charged black hole spacetime in four dimensions in dilaton-Maxwell gravity. The behaviour of effective potential in view of the different values of black hole parameters is analysed in the equatorial plane. The possible orbits for null geodesics are also discussed in detail in view of the different values of the impact parameter. We have also calculated the frequency shift of photons in this spacetime. The results obtained are then compared with those for the electrically charged stringy black hole spacetime and the Schwarzschild black hole spacetime. It is observed that there exists no stable circular orbit outside the event horizon for massless test particles.

Geodesic Motion in a Charged 2D Stringy Blackhole Spacetime

We study the timelike geodesics and geodesic deviation for a two-dimensional stringy blackhole spacetime in Schwarzschild gauge. We have analyzed the properties of effective potential along with the structure of the possible orbits for test particles with different settings of blackhole parameters. The exactly solvable geodesic deviation equation is used to obtain corresponding deviation vector. The nature of deviation and tidal force is also examined in view of the behavior of corresponding deviation vector. The results are also compared with an another two-dimensional stringy blackhole spacetime.

Gravitating Dyons in Vaidya Geometry

Gravitating monopoles and dyons in Einstein-Yang-Mills (EYM) or Einstein-Yang-Mills-Higgs (EYMH) systems have been extensively studied for various curved spacetimes, including those of black holes. We construct dyonic solutions of the EYMH theory in Vaidya spacetime using a set of generalized Julia-Zee ansatz for the fields. It is found that the dyonic charge is static in nature and it does not contribute to the energy of the null dust.

Shear Dynamics in Higher Dimensional FLRW Cosmology

We study the shear dynamics of higher dimensional Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) cosmology by considering a non-perfect fluid which exerts different pressure in the normal and extra dimensions. We generalise the definition of shear tensor for higher dimensional space-time and prove it to be consistent with the evolution equation for shear tensor obtained from the Ricci identities. The evolution of shear tensor is investigated numerically. The role of extra dimensions and other parameters involved in shear dynamics is discussed in detail. We find that with increase in anisotropy parameter, time of decay of shear increases while with increase in number of extra dimensions, shear tends to decay early.

Geodesic flows in rotating black hole backgrounds

We study the kinematics of timelike geodesic congruences, in the spacetime geometry of rotating black holes in three (the BTZ) and four (the Kerr) dimensions. The evolution (Raychaudhuri) equations for the expansion, shear and rotation along geodesic flows in such spacetimes are obtained. For the BTZ case, the equations are solved analytically. The effect of the negative cosmological constant on the evolution of the expansion ($θ$), for congruences with and without an initial rotation ($ω_0$) is noted. Subsequently, the evolution equations, in the case of a Kerr black hole in four dimensions are written and solved numerically, for some specific geodesics flows. It turns out that, for the Kerr black hole, there exists a critical value of the initial expansion below (above) which we have focusing (defocusing). We delineate the dependencies of the expansion, on the black hole angular momentum parameter, $a$, as well as on $ω_0$. Further, the role of $a$ and $ω_0$ on the time (affine parameter) of approach to a singularity (defocusing/focusing) is studied. While the role of $ω_0$ on this time of approach is as expected, the effect of $a$ leads to an interesting new result.

FLRW cosmology in Weyl-Integrable Space-Time

We investigate the Weyl space-time extension of general relativity (GR) for studying the FLRW cosmology through focusing and defocusing of the geodesic congruences. We have derived the equations of evolution for expansion, shear and rotation in the Weyl space-time. In particular we consider the Starobinsky modification, $f(R)=R+βR^2-2Λ$, of gravity in the Einstein-Palatini formalism, which turns out to reduce to the Weyl integrable space-time (WIST) with the Weyl vector being a gradient. The modified Raychaudhuri equation takes the form of the Hill-type equation which is then analysed for studying formation of the caustics. In this model, it is possible to have a Big Bang singularity free cyclic Universe but unfortunately the periodicity turns out to be extremely short.

Primeval acceleration and bounce conditions within induced gravity

A model of induced gravity with Higgs potential is analysed for the FLRW cosmology. Conditions of acceleration and signatures for the primeval universe along with the inflation are discussed. It is shown that the scalar-field excitations act quintessentially within effective pressure terms for a negative deceleration parameter. The violation of energy conditions and primeval acceleration appears naturally in the present model in view of the notions for inflationary universe with the avoidance of the Big Bang singularity.

Black Hole Solutions and Pressure Terms in Induced Gravity with Higgs Potential

We study the quintessential properties of the Black Hole solutions in a scalar--tensor theory of gravity with Higgs potential in view of the static and spherically symmetric line element. In view of our earlier results, Reissner--Nordström-like and Schwarzschild Black Hole solutions are derived with the introduction of a series-expansion method to solve the field equations without and with Higgs field mass. The physical consequences of the Black Hole solutions and the solutions obtained in the weak field limit are discussed in detail by the virtue of the equation-of-state parameter, the scalar-field excitations and the geodesic motion. The appearance of naked singularities is also discussed together with the dependence of Black Hole horizons on the field excitations, which are themselves dependent on pressure terms which effectively screen the mass terms. A possible connection to flat rotation curves following the interaction with the scalar field is also presented in the weak field limit of gravity, together with a discussion of dynamical effects of scalar fields and pressure terms on mass.

Kinematics of flows on curved, deformable media

In this article, we first investigate the kinematics of specific geodesic flows on two dimensional media with constant curvature, by explicitly solving the evolution (Raychaudhuri) equations for the expansion, shear and rotation along the flows. We point out the existence of singular (within a finite value of the time parameter) and non-singular solutions and illustrate our results through a `phase' diagram. This diagram demonstrates under which initial conditions (or combinations thereof) we end up with a singularity in the congruence and when, if at all, we encounter non--singular solutions for the kinematic variables. Our analysis illustrates the differences which arise due to a positive or negative value of the curvature. Subsequently, we move on to geodesic flows on two dimensional spaces with varying curvature. As an example, we discuss flows on a torus, where interesting oscillatory features of the expansion, shear and rotation emerge, which are found to depend on the ratio of the radii of the torus. The singular (within a finite time)/non--singular nature of the solutions are also discussed. Finally, we arrive at some general statements and point out similarities or dissimilarities that arise in comparison to our earlier work on media in flat space.

Scalar-field Pressure in Induced Gravity with Higgs Potential and Dark Matter

A model of induced gravity with a Higgs potential is investigated in detail in view of the pressure components related to the scalar-field excitations. The physical consequences emerging as an artifact due to the presence of these pressure terms are analysed in terms of the constraints parting from energy density, solar-relativistic effects and galactic dynamics along with the dark matter halos.

Confinement of test particles in warped spacetimes

We investigate test particle trajectories in warped spacetimes with a thick brane warp factor, a cosmological on--brane line element and a time dependent extra dimension. The geodesic equations are reduced to a first order autonomous dynamical system. Using analytical methods, we arrive at some useful general conclusions regarding possible trajectories. Oscillatory motion, suggesting confinement about the location of the thick brane, arises for a growing warp factor. On the other hand, we find runaway trajectories (exponential-like) for a decaying warp factor. Variations of the extra dimensional scale factor yield certain quantitative differences. Results obtained from explicit numerical evaluations match well with the qualitative conclusions obtained from the dynamical systems analysis.
