Godunov variables and convex entropy for relativistic fluid dynamics with bulk viscosity

Based on the conservation-dissipation formalism proposed by Zhu and collaborators we formulate a general version of the Israel-Stewart theory for relativistic fluid dynamics with bulk viscosity. Our generalization consists in allowing for a wide range of dependence of the entropy density on the bulk viscosity. We show the existence of Godunov-Boillat variables for this model. By known properties of systems possessing such variables, this provides an alternative proof of the recently established existence of solutions for the Israel-Stewart theory locally in time, and a proof that entropy production is positive across weak Lax shocks.

Michell truss type theories as a $Γ$-limit of optimal design in linear elasticity

We show how to derive (variants of) Michell truss theory in two and three dimensions rigorously as the vanishing weight limit of optimal design problems in linear elasticity in the sense of $Γ$-convergence. We improve our previous results in that our treatment here includes the three dimensional case and that we allow for more general boundary conditions and applied forces.

Extrinsic curvature of codimension one isometric immersions with Hölder continuous derivatives

We prove that if $n$ is even, $(M,g)$ is a compact $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold whose Pfaffian form is a positive multiple of the volume form, and $y\in C^{1,α}(M;\mathbb{R}^{n+1})$ is an isometric immersion with $n/(n+1)< α\leq 1$, then $y(M)$ is a surface of bounded extrinsic curvature. This is proved by showing that extrinsic curvature, defined by a suitable pull-back of the volume form on the $n$-sphere via the Gauss map, is identical to intrinsic curvature, defined by the Pfaffian form. This latter fact is stated in form of an integral identity for the Brouwer degree of the Gauss map, that is classical for $C^2$ functions, but new for $n>2$ in the present context of low regularity.

Integrability of the Brouwer degree for irregular arguments

We prove that the Brouwer degree $\mathrm{deg}(u,U,\cdot)$ for a function $u\in C^{0,α}( U;\mathbb{R}^n)$ is in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ if $1\leq p<\frac{nα}d$, where $U\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is open and bounded and $d$ is the box dimension of $\partial U$. This is supplemented by a theorem showing that $u_j\to u$ in $C^{0,α}(U;\mathbb{R}^n)$ implies $\mathrm{deg}(u_j,U,\cdot)\to \mathrm{deg}(u,U,\cdot)$ in $L^p(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for the parameter regime $1\leq p<\frac{nα}d$, while there exist convergent sequences $u_j\to u$ in $C^{0,α}(U;\mathbb{R}^n)$ such that $\|\mathrm{deg}(u_j,U,\cdot)\|_{L^p}\to \infty$ for the opposite regime $p>\frac{nα}d$.

Energy scaling law for a single disclination in a thin elastic sheet

We consider a single disclination in a thin elastic sheet of thickness $h$. We prove ansatz-free lower bounds for the free elastic energy in three different settings: First, for a geometrically fully non-linear plate model, second, for three-dimensional nonlinear elasticity, and third, for the Föppl-von Kármán plate theory. The lower bounds in the first and third result are optimal in the sense that we find upper bounds that are identical to the respective lower bounds in the leading order of $h$.

Energy scaling law for the regular cone

We consider a thin elastic sheet in the shape of a disk whose reference metric is that of a singular cone. I.e., the reference metric is flat away from the center and has a defect there. We define a geometrically fully nonlinear free elastic energy, and investigate the scaling behavior of this energy as the thickness $h$ tends to 0. We work with two simplifying assumptions: Firstly, we think of the deformed sheet as an immersed 2-dimensional Riemannian manifold in Euclidean 3-space and assume that the exponential map at the origin (the center of the sheet) supplies a coordinate chart for the whole manifold. Secondly, the energy functional penalizes the difference between the induced metric and the reference metric in $L^\infty$ (instead of, as is usual, in $L^2$). Under these assumptions, we show that the elastic energy per unit thickness of the regular cone in the leading order of $h$ is given by $C^*h^2|\log h|$, where the value of $C^*$ is given explicitly.

Interpenetration of matter in plate theories obtained as Gamma-limits

We consider a potential pathology in the derivation of plate theories as Gamma-limits of 3-dimensional nonlinear elasticity by Friesecke James and Muller (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 55:1461-1506 and Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal., 180:183-236), which consists in recovery sequences of invertible maps that converge to a non-invertible limit. These pathologies have been noted by Muller and Spector (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 131:1-66) in a different context. Using a combination of degree theory, the approximation of Sobolev functions by Lipschitz functions and geometric rigidity we show that the potentially pathological situation in the derivation of plate theories provides sufficient conditions for the self-intersection of the graph of the recovery sequence element, and thus the pathology is excluded.

Homogenization of the nonlinear bending theory for plates

We carry out the spatially periodic homogenization of nonlinear bending theory for plates. The derivation is rigorous in the sense of Gamma-convergence. In contrast to what one naturally would expect, our result shows that the limiting functional is not simply a quadratic functional of the second fundamental form of the deformed plate as it is the case in nonlinear plate theory. It turns out that the limiting functional discriminates between whether the deformed plate is locally shaped like a "cylinder" or not. For the derivation we investigate the oscillatory behavior of sequences of second fundamental forms associated with isometric immersions, using two-scale convergence. This is a non-trivial task, since one has to treat two-scale convergence in connection with a nonlinear differential constraint.

The one-dimensional model for d-cones revisited

A d-cone is the shape one obtains when pushing an elastic sheet at its center into a hollow cylinder. In a simple model, one can treat the elastic sheet in the deformed configuration as a developable surface with a singularity at the tip of the cone. In this approximation, the renormalized elastic energy is given by the bending energy density integrated over some annulus in the reference configuration. The thus defined variational problem depends on the indentation of the sheet into the cylinder. This model has been investigated before in the physics literature; the main motivation for the present paper is to give a rigorous version of some of the results achieved there via formal arguments. We derive the Gamma-limit of the energy functional as the indentation is sent to 0. Further, we analyze the minimizers of the limiting functional, and list a number of necessary conditions that they have to fulfill.

Almost conical deformations of thin sheets with rotational symmetry

It has been found in numerical experiments that when one removes a sector from an elastic sheet and glues the edges of the sector back together, the resulting configuration is radially symmetric and nearly conical. We make a rigorous analysis of this setting under two simplyfying assumptions: Firstly, we only consider radially symmetric configurations. Secondly, we consider the so-called von-Kármán limit, where the size of the removed region as well as the deformations are small. We choose free boundary conditions for a sheet of infinite size. We show existence of minimizers of the suitably renormalized free energy functional. As a by-product, we obtain a lower bound for the elastic energy that has been conjectured in the related context of d-cones. Moreover, we determine the shape of minimizers at infinity up to exponentially decaying terms.

preprint2012arXiv

Conical singularities in thin elastic sheets

When one slightly pushes a thin elastic sheet at its center into a hollow cylinder, the sheet forms (to a high degree of approximation) a developable cone, or "d-cone" for short. Here we investigate one particular aspect of d-cones, namely the scaling of elastic energy with the sheet thickness. Following recent work of Brandman, Kohn and Nguyen we study the Dirichlet problem of finding the configuration of minimal elastic energy when the boundary values are given by an exact d-cone. We improve their result for the energy scaling. In particular, we show that the deviation from the logarithmic energy scaling is bounded by a constant times the double logarithm of the thickness.

Perturbative Quantum Field Theory via Vertex Algebras

In this paper, we explain how perturbative quantum field theory can be formulated in terms of (a version of) vertex algebras. Our starting point is the Wilson-Zimmermann operator product expansion (OPE). Following ideas of a previous paper [arXiv:0802.2198], we consider a consistency (essentially associativity) condition satisfied by the coefficients in this expansion. We observe that the information in the OPE coefficients can be repackaged straightforwardly into "vertex operators" and that the consistency condition then has essentially the same form as the key condition in the theory of vertex algebras. We develop a general theory of perturbations of the algebras that we encounter, similar in nature to the Hochschild cohomology describing the deformation theory of ordinary algebras. The main part of the paper is devoted to the question how one can calculate the perturbations corresponding to a given interaction Lagrangian (such as $λφ^4$) in practice, using the consistency condition and the corresponding non-linear field equation. We derive graphical rules, which display the vertex operators (i.e., OPE coefficients) in terms of certain multiple series of hypergeometric type.
