Forecasting Seasonal Peaks of Pediatric Respiratory Infections Using an Alert-Based Model Combining SIR Dynamics and Historical Trends in Santiago, Chile

Acute respiratory infections (ARI) are a major cause of pediatric hospitalization in Chile, producing marked winter increases in demand that challenge hospital planning. This study presents an alert-based forecasting model to predict the timing and magnitude of ARI hospitalization peaks in Santiago. The approach integrates a seasonal SIR model with a historical mobile predictor, activated by a derivative-based alert system that detects early epidemic growth. Daily hospitalization data from DEIS were smoothed using a 15-day moving average and Savitzky-Golay filtering, and parameters were estimated using a penalized loss function to reduce sensitivity to noise. Retrospective evaluation and real-world implementation in major Santiago pediatric hospitals during 2023 and 2024 show that peak date can be anticipated about one month before the event and predicted with high accuracy two weeks in advance. Peak magnitude becomes informative roughly ten days before the peak and stabilizes one week prior. The model provides a practical and interpretable tool for hospital preparedness.

Weak notions of nondegeneracy in nonlinear semidefinite programming

The constraint nondegeneracy condition is one of the most relevant and useful constraint qualifications in nonlinear semidefinite programming. It can be characterized in terms of any fixed orthonormal basis of the, let us say, $\ell$-dimensional kernel of the constraint matrix, by the linear independence of a set of $\ell(\ell+1)/2$ derivative vectors. We show that this linear independence requirement can be equivalently formulated in a smaller set, of $\ell$ derivative vectors, by considering all orthonormal bases of the kernel instead. This allows us to identify that not all bases are relevant for a constraint qualification to be defined, giving rise to a strictly weaker variant of nondegeneracy related to the global convergence of an external penalty method. We use some of these ideas to revisit an approach of Forsgren [Math. Prog. 88, 105--128, 2000] for exploiting the sparsity structure of a transformation of the constraints to define a constraint qualification, which led us to develop another relaxed notion of nondegeneracy using a simpler transformation. If the zeros of the derivatives of the constraint function at a given point are considered, instead of the zeros of the function itself in a neighborhood of that point, we obtain an even weaker constraint qualification that connects Forsgren's condition and ours.

Refining the partition for multifold conic optimization problems

In this paper we give a unified treatment of two different definitions of complementarity partition of multifold conic programs introduced independently in [J. F. Bonnans and H. Ramírez C., Math. Program. 104 (2005), no. 2-3, Ser. B, 205--227] for conic optimization problems, and in [J. Peña and V. Roshchina, Math. Program. 142 (2013), no 1-2, Ser. A, 579--589] for homogeneous feasibility problems. We show that both can be treated within the same unified geometric framework, and extend the latter notion to optimization problems. We also show that the two partitions do not coincide, and their intersection gives a seven-set index partition. Finally, we demonstrate that the partitions are preserved under the application of nonsingular linear transformations, and in particular that a standard conversion of a second-order cone program into a semidefinite programming problem preserves the partitions.

The present and future of the most favoured inflationary models after $Planck$ 2015

The value of the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ in the region allowed by the latest $Planck$ 2015 measurements can be associated to a large variety of inflationary models. We discuss here the potential of future Cosmic Microwave Background cosmological observations in disentangling among the possible theoretical scenarios allowed by our analyses of current $Planck$ temperature and polarization data. Rather than focusing only on $r$, we focus as well on the running of the primordial power spectrum, $α_s$ and the running of thereof, $β_s$. Our Fisher matrix method benefits from a detailed and realistic appraisal of the expected foregrounds. Future cosmological probes, as the COrE mission, may be able to reach an unprecedented accuracy in the extraction of $β_s$ and rule out the most favoured inflationary models.

Does Current Data Prefer a Non-minimally Coupled Inflaton?

We examine the impact of a non-minimal coupling of the inflaton to the Ricci scalar, $\frac12 ξRϕ^2$, on the inflationary predictions. Such a non-minimal coupling is expected to be present in the inflaton Lagrangian on fairly general grounds. As a case study, we focus on the simplest inflationary model governed by the potential $V\propto ϕ^2$, using the latest combined 2015 analysis of Planck and BICEP2/Keck Array. We find that the presence of a coupling $ξ$ is favoured at a significance of $99\%$ CL, assuming that nature has chosen the potential $V\propto ϕ^2$ to generate the primordial perturbations and a number of e-foldings $N=60$. Within the context of the same scenario, we find that the value of $ξ$ is different from zero at the $2σ$ level. When considering the cross-correlation polarization spectra from BICEP2/Keck Array and Planck, a value of $r=0.038_{-0.030}^{+0.039}$ is predicted in this particular non-minimally coupled scenario. Future cosmological observations may therefore test these values of $r$ and verify or falsify the non-minimally coupled model explored here.

Phenomenological approaches of inflation and their equivalence

In this work, we analyze two possible alternative and model-independent approaches to describe the inflationary period. The first one assumes a general equation of state during inflation due to Mukhanov, while the second one is based on the slow-roll hierarchy suggested by Hoffman and Turner. We find that, remarkably, the two approaches are equivalent from the observational viewpoint, as they single out the same areas in the parameter space, and agree with the inflationary attractors where successful inflation occurs. Rephrased in terms of the familiar picture of a slowly rolling, canonically normalized scalar field, the resulting inflaton excursions in these two approaches are almost identical. Furthermore, once the Galactic dust polarization data from Planck are included in the numerical fits, inflaton excursions can safely take sub-Planckian values.
