Enhanced energy relaxation process of quantum memory coupled with a superconducting qubit

For quantum information processing, each physical system has different advantage for the implementation and so hybrid systems to benefit from several systems would be able to provide a promising approach. One of the common hybrid approach is to combine a superconducting qubit as a controllable qubit and the other quantum system with a long coherence time as a memory qubit. The superconducting qubit allows us to have an excellent controllability of the quantum states and the memory qubit is capable of storing the information for a long time. By tuning the energy splitting between the superconducting qubit and the memory qubit, it is believed that one can realize a selective coupling between them. However, we have shown that this approach has a fundamental drawback concerning energy leakage from the memory qubit. The detuned superconducting qubit is usually affected by severe decoherence, and this causes an incoherent energy relaxation from the memory qubit to the superconducting qubit via the imperfect decoupling. We have also found that this energy transport can be interpreted as an appearance of anti quantum Zeno effect induced by the fluctuation in the superconducting qubit. We also discuss a possible solution to avoid such energy relaxation process, which is feasible with existing technology.

Coherent coupling of a superconducting flux-qubit to an electron spin ensemble in diamond

Electron-spin nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond are a natural candidate to act as a quantum memory for superconducting qubits because of their large collective coupling and long coherence times. We report here the first demonstration of strong coupling and coherent exchange of a single quantum of energy between a flux-qubit and an ensemble of nitrogen-vacancy color centers.

Quantum Time-evolution in Qubit Readout Process with a Josephson Bifurcation Amplifier

We analyzed the Josephson bifurcation amplifier (JBA) readout process of a superconducting qubit quantum mechanically. This was achieved by employing numerical analyses of the dynamics of the density operator of a driven nonlinear oscillator and a qubit coupled system during the measurement process. In purely quantum cases, the wavefunction of the JBA is trapped in a quasienergy-state, and bifurcation is impossible. Introducing decoherence enables us to reproduce the bifurcation with a finite hysteresis. Moreover, we discuss in detail the dynamics involved when a qubit is initially in a superposition state. We have observed the qubit-probe (JBA) entangled state and it is divided into two separable states at the moment of the JBA transition begins. This corresponds to "projection". To readout the measurement result, however, we must wait until the two JBA states are macroscopically well separated. The waiting time is determined by the strength of the decoherence in the JBA.
