Fine-tunings and renormalization of gluino bilinear operators in lattice SYM with Stout-Smeared links

In this paper, we compute the renormalization factors for the gluino and gluon fields, the gauge parameter, the coupling constant, as well as the scalar, pseudoscalar, and axial-vector gluino bilinear operators in N=1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, using improved lattice actions. Our lattice formulation employs clover fermions, a Symanzik-improved gauge action, and stout-smeared links, which suppress ultraviolet fluctuations and thus enable more accurate determinations of renormalization factors. Our methodology involves computing gauge-variant two-point and three-point Green's functions at one-loop order in lattice perturbation theory, in order to extract the multiplicative renormalization factors and the critical gluino mass. By analyzing lattice discretization effects on the axial current and their dependence on the stout-smearing and clover parameters, we identify a value of the smearing parameter that ensures axial-current conservation at one loop. The results presented in this work provide practical guidance for the fine-tuning procedures required to set up and calibrate lattice simulations of SYM.

Improved renormalization scheme for nonlocal operators

In this paper we present an improved RI-type prescription appropriate for the non-perturbative renormalization of gauge invariant nonlocal operators. In this prescription, the non-perturbative vertex function is improved by subtracting unwanted finite lattice spacing ($a$) effects, calculated in lattice perturbation theory. The method is versatile and can be applied to a wide range of fermion and gluon actions, as well as types of nonlocal operators. The presence of operator mixing can also be accommodated. Compared to the standard RI' prescription, this variant can be recast as a supplementary finite renormalization, whose coefficients bring about corrections of higher order in $a$; consequently, it coincides with standard RI' as $a\to 0$, however it can afford us a smoother and more controlled extrapolation to the continuum limit. In this proof-of-concept calculation we focus on nonlocal fermion bilinear operators containing a straight Wilson line. In the numerical implementation we use Wilson/clover fermions and Iwasaki improved gluons. The finite-$a$ terms were calculated to one-loop level in lattice perturbation theory, and to all orders in $a$, using the same action as the non-perturbative vertex functions. We find that the method leads to significant improvement in the perturbative region indicated by small and intermediate values of the length of the Wilson line. This results in a robust extraction of the renormalization functions in that region. We have also applied the above method to operators with stout-smeared links. We show how to perform the perturbative correction for any number of smearing iterations, and evaluate its effect on the power divergent renormalization coefficients.

Perturbative renormalization of the supercurrent operator in lattice ${\cal N}{=}1$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory

In this work we perform a perturbative study of the Noether supercurrent operator in the context of Supersymmetric ${\cal N}{=}1$ Yang-Mills (SYM) theory on the lattice. The supercurrent mixes with several other operators, some of which are not gauge invariant, having the same quantum numbers. We determine, to one loop order, the renormalization and all corresponding mixing coefficients by computing relevant Green's functions of each one of the mixing operators with external elementary fields. Our calculations are performed both in dimensional and lattice regularization. From the first regularization we obtain the $\bar{MS}$-renormalized Green's functions; comparison of the latter with the corresponding Green's functions in the lattice regularization leads to the extraction of the lattice renormalization factors and mixing coefficients in the $\bar{MS}$ scheme. The lattice calculations are performed to lowest order in the lattice spacing, using Wilson gluons and clover improved gluinos. The lattice results can be used in nonperturbative studies of supersymmetric Ward identities.

Two-loop renormalization and mixing of gluon and quark energy-momentum tensor operators

In this paper, we present one- and two-loop results for the renormalization of the gluon and quark gauge-invariant operators which appear in the definition of the QCD energy-momentum tensor, in dimensional regularization. To this end, we consider a variety of Green's functions with different incoming momenta. We identify the set of twist-2 symmetric traceless and flavor singlet operators which mix among themselves and we calculate the corresponding mixing coefficients for the nondiagonal components. We also provide results for some appropriate regularization-independent (RI')-like schemes, which address this mixing, and we discuss their application to nonperturbative studies via lattice simulations. Finally, we extract the one- and two-loop expressions of the conversion factors between the proposed RI' and the MSbar schemes. From our results regarding the MSbar-renormalized Green's functions, one can easily derive conversion factors relating numerous variants of RI'-like schemes to MSbar. To make our results easily accessible, we also provide them as Supplemental Material, in the form of a Mathematica input file and, also, an equivalent text file.

Recent results for the proton spin decomposition from lattice QCD

The exact decomposition of the proton spin has been a much debated topic, on the experimental as well as the theoretical side. In this talk we would like to report on recent non-perturbative results and ongoing efforts to explore the proton spin from lattice QCD. We present results for the relevant generalized form factors from gauge field ensembles that feature a physical value of the pion mass. These generalized form factors can be used to determine the total spin and angular momentum carried by the quarks. In addition we present first results for our ongoing effort to compute the angular momentum of the gluons in the proton.

Off-equilibrium scaling behaviors across first-order transitions

We study off-equilibrium behaviors at first-order transitions (FOTs) driven by a time dependence of the temperature across the transition point Tc, such as the linear behavior T(t)/Tc = 1 - t/ts where ts is a time scale. In particular, we investigate the possibility of nontrivial off-equilibrium scaling behaviors in the regime of slow changes, corresponding to large ts, analogous to those arising at continuous transitions, which lead to the so-called Kibble-Zurek mechanism. We consider the 2D Potts models which provide an ideal theoretical laboratory to investigate issues related to FOTs driven by thermal fluctuations. We put forward general ansatzes for off-equilibrium scaling behaviors around the time t=0 corresponding to Tc. Then we present numerical results for the q=10 and q=20 Potts models. We show that phenomena analogous to the Kibble-Zurek off-equilibrium scaling emerge also at FOTs with relaxational dynamics, when appropriate boundary conditions are considered, such as mixed boundary conditions favoring different phases at the opposite sides of the system, which enforce an interface in the system.

Change of theta dependence in 4D SU(N) gauge theories across the deconfinement transition

We investigate the dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature and, in particular, across the deconfinement transition. For this purpose, we exploit the lattice formulation of the theory and present numerical results for the expansion of the free energy up to O(theta^6), for N=3 and N=6. Our numerical analysis shows that the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theory experiences a drastic change across the deconfinement transition: the low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while in the high-temperature phase the scaling variable is just theta and the free energy is essentially determined by the instanton-gas approximation. The crossover between the two different behaviours gets sharper with increasing N, suggesting that the instanton-gas regime sets in just above Tc at large N.

Nucleon transversity generalized form factors with twisted mass fermions

We present results on the nucleon tensor form factors and first moment of the transversity distribution using maximally twisted mass fermions. We analyze two Nf=2+1+1 ensembles having pion masses of 213 MeV and 373 MeV with lattice spacing a=0.064 fm and a=0.082 fm, respectively. First results using an Nf=2 ensemble of twisted mass fermions with a clover term at a physical pion mass and lattice spacing a=0.094 fm are also presented. The renormalization function for the local tensor form factors is evaluated non-perturbatively with a perturbative subtraction of O(a^2)-terms, while for the first moment of the transversity we use a perturbative estimate. Results are given in the MS-bar scheme at a scale of mu=2 GeV, and are compared with recent results obtained using different discretization schemes.

Theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories at finite temperature

We report a study of the dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories on the topological theta term at finite temperature, and in particular in the large-N limit. We show that the theta dependence drastically changes across the deconfinement transition. The low-temperature phase is characterized by a large-N scaling with theta/N as relevant variable, while in the high-temperature phase the free energy is essentially determined by the dilute instanton-gas approximation, with a simple theta dependence of the free-energy density proportional to 1-Cos(theta).

Theta dependence of SU(N) gauge theories in the presence of a topological term

We review results concerning the theta dependence of 4D SU(N) gauge theories and QCD, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we discuss theta dependence in the large-N limit. Most results have been obtained within the lattice formulation of the theory via numerical simulations, which allow to investigate the theta dependence of the ground-state energy and the spectrum around theta=0 by determining the moments of the topological charge distribution, and their correlations with other observables. We discuss the various methods which have been employed to determine the topological susceptibility, and higher-order terms of the theta expansion. We review results at zero and finite temperature. We show that the results support the scenario obtained by general large-N scaling arguments, and in particular the Witten-Veneziano mechanism to explain the U(1)_A problem. We also compare with results obtained by other approaches, especially in the large-N limit, where the issue has been also addressed using, for example, the AdS/CFT correspondence. We discuss issues related to theta dependence in full QCD: the neutron electric dipole moment, the dependence of the topological susceptibility on the quark masses, the U(1)_A symmetry breaking at finite temperature. We also consider the 2D CP(N) model, which is an interesting theoretical laboratory to study issues related to topology. We review analytical results in the large-N limit, and numerical results within its lattice formulation. Finally, we discuss the main features of the two-point correlation function of the topological charge density.

Simulating a CP-violating topological term in gauge theories

We present recent results on the theta-dependence of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the CP-violating topological term in the Lagrangian. In particular, we study the scaling behavior of these theories, by Monte Carlo simulations at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).

The 4D SU(3) gauge theory with an imaginary theta term

We study the scaling behavior of the 4D SU(3) lattice gauge theory in the presence of a theta term, by Monte Carlo simulations computing the topological properties at imaginary theta. The numerical results provide a good evidence of scaling in the continuum limit. The imaginary theta dependence of the ground-state energy turns out to be well described by the first few terms of related expansions around theta=0, providing accurate estimates of the first few coefficients, up to O(theta^6).

O(a^2) corrections to 1-loop matrix elements of 4-fermion operators with improved fermion/gluon actions

We calculate the corrections to the amputated Green's functions of 4-fermion operators, in 1-loop Lattice Perturbation theory. The novel aspect of our calculations is that they are carried out to second order in the lattice spacing, O(a^2). We employ the Wilson/clover action for massless fermions (also applicable for the twisted mass action in the chiral limit) and the Symanzik improved action for gluons. Our calculations have been carried out in a general covariant gauge. Results have been obtained for several popular choices of values for the Symanzik coefficients (Plaquette, Tree-level Symanzik, Iwasaki, TILW and DBW2 action). We pay particular attention to $ΔF=2$ operators, both Parity Conserving and Parity Violating ($F$ stands for flavour: S, C, B). We study the mixing pattern of these operators, to O(a^2), using the appropriate projectors. Our results for the corresponding renormalization matrices are given as a function of a large number of parameters: coupling constant, clover parameter, number of colors, lattice spacing, external momentum and gauge parameter. The O(a^2) correction terms (along with our previous O(a^2) calculation of $Z_Ψ$) are essential ingredients for minimizing the lattice artifacts which are present in non-perturbative evaluations of renormalization constants with the RI'-MOM method. A longer write-up of this work, including non-perturbative results, is in preparation together with members of the ETM Collaboration.

Perturbative renormalization factors and O(a^2) corrections for lattice 4-fermion operators with improved fermion/gluon actions

In this work we calculate the corrections to the amputated Green's functions of 4-fermion operators, in 1-loop Lattice Perturbation theory. One of the novel aspects of our calculations is that they are carried out to O(a^2) (a: lattice spacing). We employ the Wilson/clover action for massless fermions (also applicable for the twisted mass action in the chiral limit) and a family of Symanzik improved actions for gluons. Our calculations have been carried out in a general covariant gauge. Results have been obtained for several popular choices of values for the Symanzik coefficients. While our Green's function calculations regard any pointlike 4-fermion operators which do not mix with lower dimension ones, we pay particular attention to DF=2 operators, both Parity Conserving and Parity Violating (F: flavour). We compute the perturbative renormalization constants for a complete basis of 4-fermion operators and we study their mixing pattern. For some of the actions considered here, even O(a^0) results did not exist in the literature to date. The correction terms which we calculate are essential ingredients for minimizing the lattice artifacts which are present in non-perturbative evaluations of renormalization constants with the RI'-MOM method. Our perturbative results, for the matrix elements of DF=2 operators and for the corresponding renormalization matrices, depend on a large number of parameters: coupling constant, number of colors, lattice spacing, external momentum, clover parameter, Symanzik coefficients, gauge parameter. To make these results most easily accessible, we have included them in the distribution package of this paper, as an ASCII file named: 4-fermi.m; the file is best perused as Mathematica input. The main results of this work have been applied to improve non-perturbative estimates of the B_K-parameter in N_F=2 twisted mass lattice QCD.

Perturbative renormalization of GPDs to O(a^2), for various fermion/gluon actions

We present a 1-loop perturbative calculation of the fermion propagator, up to O(a^2) (a: lattice spacing). The fermions are described by Wilson, clover and twisted-mass actions; for gluons we use Symanzik improved actions (Plaquette, Tree-level Symanzik, Iwasaki, TILW, DBW2). Our results are given in a general covariant gauge, and their dependence on the coupling constant, the external momentum, the masses and the clover parameter is shown explicitly. We also study the O(a^2) corrections to matrix elements of unpolarized/polarized fermion bilinear operators, which include up to one derivative. These corrections are essential ingredients for improving, to O(a^2), the renormalization constants of the operators under study. In addition, they can be used to minimize lattice artifacts in non-perturbative studies.

Theta-dependence of the spectrum of SU(N) gauge theories

We study the theta dependence of the spectrum of four-dimensional SU(N) gauge theories, where theta is the coefficient of the topological term in the Lagrangian, for N>=3 and in the large-N limit. We compute the O(theta^2) terms of the expansions around theta=0 of the string tension and the lowest glueball mass, respectively sigma(theta) = sigma (1 + s_2 theta^2 + ...) and M(theta) = M (1 + g_2 theta^2 + ...), where sigma and M are the values at theta=0. For this purpose we use numerical simulations of the Wilson lattice formulation of SU(N) gauge theories for N=3,4,6. The O(theta^2) coefficients turn out to be very small for all N>=3. For example, s_2=-0.08(1) and g_2=-0.06(2) for N=3. Their absolute values decrease with increasing N. Our results are suggestive of a scenario in which the theta dependence in the string and glueball spectrum vanishes in the large-N limit, at least for sufficiently small values of |theta|. They support the general large-N scaling arguments that indicate (theta/N) as the relevant Lagrangian parameter in the large-N expansion.
