Measuring neutron skin by grazing isobaric collisions

Neutron skin thickness ($Δr_{\rm np}$) of nuclei and the inferred nuclear symmetry energy are of critical importance to nuclear physics and astrophysics. It is traditionally measured by nuclear processes with significant theoretical uncertainties. We recently proposed an indirect measurement of the $Δr_{\rm np}$ by charged hadron multiplicities in central isobaric collisions at relativistic energies, which are sensitive to nuclear densities. In this Letter, we propose a direct measurement of the $Δr_{\rm np}$ by using net-charge multiplicities in ultra-peripheral (grazing) collisions of those isobars, under the assumption that they are simple superimposition of nucleon-nucleon interactions. We illustrate this novel approach by the TRENTO and URQMD models.

Two- and three-particle nonflow contributions to the chiral magnetic effect measurement by spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions

Correlation measurements with respect to the spectator and participant planes in relativistic heavy ion collisions were proposed to extract the chiral magnetic effect (CME) from background dominated azimuthal correlators. This paper investigates the effects of two- and three-particle nonflow correlations on the extracted CME signal fraction, $f_{\text{CME}}$. It is found, guided by a multiphase transport (AMPT) model and the heavy ion jet interaction generator (HIJING) together with experimental data, that the nonflow effects amount to approximately $(4\pm5)$% and $(-5\pm3)$% without and with pseudorapidity gaps, respectively, in 20-50% centrality Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\text{NN}}}= 200 \text{ GeV}$.

Importance of non-flow background on the chiral magnetic wave search

An observable sensitive to the chiral magnetic wave (CMW) is the charge asymmetry dependence of the $π^{-}$ and $π^{+}$ anisotropic flow difference, $Δv_{n}(A_{\rm ch})$. We show that, due to non-flow correlations, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $Δv_{n}(A_{\rm ch})$. The trivial slope contribution to the triangle flow difference $Δv_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ can be negative if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. This can explain the observed negative $Δv_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ slope in the preliminary STAR data. We further find that the non-flow correlations give rise to additional backgrounds to the slope of $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ from the competition among different pion sources and from the larger multiplicity dilution to $π^{+}$ ($π^{-}$) at positive (negative) $A_{\rm ch}$.

Complications in the interpretation of the charge asymmetry dependent $π$ flow for the chiral magnetic wave

The charge asymmetry ($A_{\rm ch}$) dependence of the $π^{-}$ and $π^{+}$ elliptic flow difference, $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$, has been regarded as a sensitive observable for the possible chiral magnetic wave (CMW) in relativistic heavy ion collisions. In this work, we first demonstrate that, due to non-flow backgrounds, the flow measurements by the Q-cumulant method using all charged particles as reference introduce a trivial linear term to $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$. The trivial slope can be negative in the triangle flow difference $Δv_{3}(A_{\rm ch})$ if the non-flow is dominated by back-to-back pairs. After eliminating the trivial term, we find that the non-flow between like-sign pairs gives rise to an additional positive slope to $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ because of the larger dilution effect to $π^{+}$ ($π^{-}$) at positive (negative) $A_{\rm ch}$. We further find that the competition between different $π$ sources can introduce another non-trivial linear-$A_{\rm ch}$ term due to their different multiplicity fluctuations and anisotropic flows. We then study the effect of neutral cluster (resonance) decays as a mechanism for local charge conservation on the slope parameter of $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$. We find that the slope parameter is sensitive to the kinematics of those neutral clusters. Light resonances give positive slopes while heavy resonances give negative slopes. Local charge conservation from continuum cluster mass distribution can give a positive slope parameter comparable to experimental data. Our studies indicate that many non-CMW physics mechanisms can give rise to a $A_{\rm ch}$-dependent $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ and the interpretation of $Δv_{2}(A_{\rm ch})$ in terms of the CMW is delicate.

Cumulants of multiplicity distributions in most-central heavy-ion collisions

I investigate the volume corrections on cumulants of total charge distributions and net proton distributions. The required volume information is generated by an optical Glauber model. I find that the corrected statistical expectations of multiplicity distributions mimic the negative binomial distributions at non-central collisions, and they tend to approach the Poisson ones at most-central collisions due to the "boundary effects," which suppress the volume corrections. However, net proton distributions and reference multiplicity distributions are sensitive to the external volume fluctuations at most-central collisions, which imply that one has to consider the details of volume distributions in event-by-event multiplicity fluctuation studies.

Effects of volume corrections and resonance decays on cumulants of net-charge distributions in a Monte Carlo hadron resonance gas model

The effects of volume corrections and resonance decays (the resulting correlations between positive charges and negative charges) on cumulants of net-proton distributions and net-charge distributions are investigated by using a Monte Carlo hadron resonance gas ({\tt MCHRG}) model. The required volume distributions are generated by a Monte Carlo Glauber ({\tt MC-Glb}) model. Except the variances of net-charge distributions, the {\tt MCHRG} model with more realistic simulations of volume corrections, resonance decays and acceptance cuts can reasonably explain the data of cumulants of net-proton distributions and net-charge distributions reported by the STAR collaboration. The {\tt MCHRG} calculations indicate that both the volume corrections and resonance decays make the cumulant products of net-charge distributions deviate from the Skellam expectations: the deviations of $Sσ$ and $κσ^{2}$ are dominated by the former effect while the deviations of $ω$ are dominated by the latter one.

High order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions

Using iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model with the AMPT initial conditions, we study the higher order flow harmonics of identified hadrons in 2.76 A TeV Pb+Pb collisions. Comparison with the recent ALICE measurements at 20-30\% centrality shows that our calculations nicely describe the data below 2 GeV, especially for the $v_2$, $v_3$ and $v_4$ mass-orderings among pions, kaons and protons. We also extended the calculations to other centrality bins, which presents similar mass-ordering patterns for these flow harmonics as the ones observed at 20-30\% centrality. In the later part of this article, we explore the development of $v_n$ mass ordering/splitting during the hadronic evolution through the comparison runs from iEBE-VISHNU hybrid model and pure hydrodynamics with different decoupling temperatures.

Understanding the negative binomial multiplicity fluctuations in relativistic heavy ion collisions

By deriving a general expression for multiplicity distribution (a conditional probability distribution) in statistical model, we demonstrate the mismatches between experimental measurements and previous theoretical calculations on multiplicity fluctuations. From the corrected formula, we develop an improved baseline measure for multiplicity distribution under Poisson approximation in statistical model to replace the traditional Poisson expectations. We find that the ratio of the mean multiplicity to the corresponding reference multiplicity are crucial to systemically explaining the measured scale variances of total charge distributions in different experiments, as well as understanding the centrality resolution effect observed in experiment. The improved statistical expectations, albeit simple, work well in describing the negative binomial multiplicity distribution measured in experiments, e.g. the cumulants (cumulant products) of total (net) electric charge distributions.

Physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at very high energy

Heavy-ion collisions at very high colliding energies are expected to produce a quark-gluon plasma (QGP) at the highest temperature obtainable in a laboratory setting. Experimental studies of these reactions can provide an unprecedented range of information on properties of the QGP at high temperatures. We report theoretical investigations of the physics perspectives of heavy-ion collisions at a future high-energy collider. These include initial parton production, collective expansion of the dense medium, jet quenching, heavy-quark transport, dissociation and regeneration of quarkonia, photon and dilepton production. We illustrate the potential of future experimental studies of the initial particle production and formation of QGP at the highest temperature to provide constraints on properties of strongly interaction matter.

Charm quarks in medium and their contribution to di-electron spectra in relativistic heavy ion collisions

We study the dynamics of charm quarks in the partonic medium and its implication to the di-electron spectra in high energy heavy ion collisions. The charm quarks traversing a thermal medium is simulated by the relativistic Langevin equation for elastic scatterings of charm quarks by thermal partons in an expanding fireball. The transport coefficients of charm quarks are calculated by the in-medium T-matrix method, where a static heavy quark potential is used with parameters fitted by the lattice QCD results. The di-electron invariant mass spectra are computed in most central collisions and are compared to the STAR data. The angular correlations of di-electrons are almost the same in $p+p$ and Au+Au collisions in the mass range $1.1<M<2.5~\mathrm{GeV/c^2}$ with the back-to-back feature. This means that the angular correlation is intact even with medium interaction at the RHIC energy.

Elliptic flow of thermal dileptons in event-by-event hydrodynamic simulation

The elliptic flows of thermal di-electrons are investigated within a (2+1)-dimension event-by-event hydrodynamic model for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV. The fluctuating initial conditions are given by the Monte Carlo Glauber model. We find in our event-by-event calculation rather weak correlation between the dilepton emission angles and the event plane angles of charged hadrons. We observe strong fluctuation effects in dilepton elliptic flows when using the event plane angles of dileptons at specific invariant mass $M$. The correlation between the dilepton event plane angle and charged hadron one becomes stronger with decreasing $M$. This provides a possible measure of the interplay between the effect of geometric deformation and that of fluctuating "hot spots" in relativistic heavy ion collisions.

Di-electron production from vector mesons with medium modifications in heavy ion collisions

We reproduce the di-electron spectra in the low and intermediate mass regions in most central Au+Au collisions by the STAR Collaboration incorporation of the STAR detector acceptance. We also compare our results with PHENIX data constrained by the PHENIX acceptance. We include the medium modifications of vector mesons from scatterings of vector mesons by mesons and baryons in the thermal medium. The freezeout contributions from vector mesons are also taken into account. The space-time evolution is described by a 2+1 dimensional ideal hydrodynamic model. The backgrounds from semi-leptonic decays of charm hadrons are simulated by the PYTHIA event generator and corrected by the nuclear modification factor of electrons from charm decays. It is difficult to extract the thermal contributions from those from charm decays in the invariant mass spectra alone and in the current detector acceptances. Other observables such as transverse momenta and collective flows may provide additional tools to tag these sources.

Refractive Index of Light in the Quark-Gluon Plasma with the Hard-Thermal-Loop Perturbation Theory

The electric permittivity and magnetic permeability for the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) is calculated within the hard-thermal-loop (HTL) perturbation theory. The refractive indices in the magnetizable and non-magnetizable plasmas are calculated. In a magnetizable plasma, there is a frequency pole $ω_{mp}$ in the magnetic permeability and the refractive index. The refractive index becomes negative in the range $ω\in[k,ω_{mp}]$, where $k$ is the wave number, but no propagating modes are found. In a non-magnetizable plasma, the magnetic permeability and the refractive index are always positive. This marks the main distinction of a weakly coupled plasma from a strongly coupled one, where the negative refraction is shown to exist in a holographic theory.
