Lightwave Power Transfer for Federated Learning-based Wireless Networks

Federated Learning (FL) has been recently presented as a new technique for training shared machine learning models in a distributed manner while respecting data privacy. However, implementing FL in wireless networks may significantly reduce the lifetime of energy-constrained mobile devices due to their involvement in the construction of the shared learning models. To handle this issue, we propose a novel approach at the physical layer based on the application of lightwave power transfer in the FL-based wireless network and a resource allocation scheme to manage the network's power efficiency. Hence, we formulate the corresponding optimization problem and then propose a method to obtain the optimal solution. Numerical results reveal that, the proposed scheme can provide sufficient energy to a mobile device for performing FL tasks without using any power from its own battery. Hence, the proposed approach can support the FL-based wireless network to overcome the issue of limited energy in mobile devices.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access for Hybrid VLC-RF Networks with Imperfect Channel State Information

The present contribution proposes a general framework for the energy efficiency analysis of a hybrid visible light communication (VLC) and Radio Frequency (RF) wireless system, in which both VLC and RF subsystems utilize nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technology. The proposed framework is based on realistic communication scenarios as it takes into account the mobility of users, and assumes imperfect channel-state information (CSI). In this context, tractable closed-form expressions are derived for the corresponding average sum rate of NOMA-VLC and its orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA)-VLC counterparts. It is shown extensively that incurred CSI errors have a considerable impact on the average energy efficiency of both NOMA-VLC and OFDMAVLC systems and hence, they should not be neglected in practical designs and deployments. Interestingly, we further demonstrate that the average energy efficiency of the hybrid NOMA-VLCRF system outperforms NOMA-VLC system under imperfect CSI. Respective computer simulations corroborate the derived analytic results and interesting theoretical and practical insights are provided, which will be useful in the effective design and deployment of conventional VLC and hybrid VLC-RF systems.

Design of a visible-light-communication enhanced WiFi system

Visible light communication (VLC) has wide unlicensed bandwidth, enables communication in radio frequency (RF) sensitive environments, realizes energy-efficient data transmission, and has the potential to boost the capacity of wireless access networks through spatial reuse. On the other hand, WiFi provides more coverage than VLC and does not suffer from the likelihood of blockage due to the light of sight (LOS) requirement of VLC. In order to take the advantages of both WiFi and VLC, we propose and implement two heterogeneous systems with Internet access. One is the hybrid WiFi-VLC system, utilizing unidirectional VLC channel as downlink and reserving the WiFi back-channel as uplink. The asymmetric solution resolves the optical uplink challenges and benefits from the full-duplex communication based on VLC. To further enhance the robustness and increase throughput, the other system is presented, in which we aggregate WiFi and VLC in parallel by leveraging the bonding technique in Linux operating system. Online experiment results reveal that the hybrid system outperforms the conventional WiFi for the crowded environments in terms of throughput and web page loading time; and also demonstrate the further improved performance of the aggregated system when considering the blocking duration and the distance between access point and user device.

Spectrally and Energy Efficient OFDM (SEE-OFDM) for Intensity Modulated Optical Wireless Systems

Spectrally and energy efficient orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (SEE-OFDM) is an optical OFDM technique based on combining multiple asymmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ACO-OFDM) signals into one OFDM signal. By summing different components together, SEE-OFDM can achieve the same spectral efficiency as DC-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) without an energy-inefficient DC-bias. This paper introduces multiple methods for decoding a SEE-OFDM symbol and shows that an iterative decoder with hard decisions gives the best performance. Being a multi-component format, different energy allocation amongst the different components of SEE-OFDM is possible. However, equal energy allocation performs 1.5 dB better than unequal energy allocation. A hard-decision, iterative subtraction receiver can further increase performance by another 1.5 dB over soft-decision subtraction and reconstruction receivers. SEE-OFDM consistently performs 3 dB or better and with higher spectral efficiency than ACO-OFDM at the same bit-error-rate (BER). Comparing other combination methods at the same BER, SEE-OFDM performs up to 3 dB better than hybrid asymmetrically clipped optical (OFDM) (HACO-OFDM) and up to 1.5 dB better than asymmetrically and symmetrically clipped optical OFDM (ASCO-OFDM) and enhanced unipolar OFDM (eU-OFDM) when using hard decisions at the receiver. Additionally, SEE-OFDM has the best peak-to-average-power rate (PAPR) as compared to the other combination OFDM formats and ACO-OFDM, which makes it excellent for any range limited optical source, such as laser diodes and light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In summary, SEE-OFDM is shown to have excellent properties to glean additional capacity from an intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) optical wireless communications system.
