Optimal dividends revisited: a gradient-based method and evolutionary algorithms

We reconsider the study of optimal dividend strategies in the Cramér-Lundberg risk model. It is well-known that the solution of the classical dividend problem is in general a band strategy. However, the numerical techniques for the identification of the optimal bands available in the literature are very hard to implement and explicit numerical results are known for very few cases only. In this paper we put a gradient-based method into place which allows to determine optimal bands in more general situations. In addition, we adapt an evolutionary algorithm to this dividend problem, which is not as fast, but applicable in considerable generality, and can serve for providing a competitive benchmark. We illustrate the proposed methods in concrete examples, reproducing earlier results in the literature as well as establishing new ones for claim size distributions that could not be studied before.

Efficient simulation of ruin probabilities when claims are mixtures of heavy and light tails

We consider the classical Cramér-Lundberg risk model with claim sizes that are mixtures of phase-type and subexponential variables. Exploiting a specific geometric compound representation, we propose control variate techniques to efficiently simulate the ruin probability in this situation. The resulting estimators perform well for both small and large initial capital. We quantify the variance reduction as well as the efficiency gain of our method over another fast standard technique based on the classical Pollaczek-Khinchine formula. We provide a numerical example to illustrate the performance, and show that for more time-consuming conditional Monte Carlo techniques, the new series representation also does not compare unfavorably to the one based on the Pollaczek- Khinchine formula.

Exit identities for Lévy processes observed at Poisson arrival times

For a spectrally one-sided Lévy process, we extend various two-sided exit identities to the situation when the process is only observed at arrival epochs of an independent Poisson process. In addition, we consider exit problems of this type for processes reflected either from above or from below. The resulting Laplace transforms of the main quantities of interest are in terms of scale functions and turn out to be simple analogues of the classical formulas.

Exact boundaries in sequential testing for phase-type distributions

We consider Wald's sequential probability ratio test for deciding whether a sequence of independent and identically distributed observations comes from a specified phase-type distribution or from an exponentially tilted alternative distribution. In this setting, we derive exact decision boundaries for given Type I and Type II errors by establishing a link with ruin theory. Information on the mean sample size of the test can be retrieved as well. The approach relies on the use of matrix-valued scale functions associated to a certain one-sided Markov additive process. By suitable transformations the results also apply to other types of distributions including some distributions with regularly varying tail.

Exact and asymptotic results for insurance risk models with surplus-dependent premiums

In this paper we develop a symbolic technique to obtain asymptotic expressions for ruin probabilities and discounted penalty functions in renewal insurance risk models when the premium income depends on the present surplus of the insurance portfolio. The analysis is based on boundary problems for linear ordinary differential equations with variable coefficients. The algebraic structure of the Green's operators allows us to develop an intuitive way of tackling the asymptotic behavior of the solutions, leading to exponential-type expansions and Cramér-type asymptotics. Furthermore, we obtain closed-form solutions for more specific cases of premium functions in the compound Poisson risk model.
