Testing modified gravity scenarios with direct peculiar velocities

The theoretical basis of dark energy remains unknown and could signify a need to modify the laws of gravity on cosmological scales. In this study we investigate how the clustering and motions of galaxies can be used as probes of modified gravity theories, using galaxy and direct peculiar velocity auto- and cross-correlation functions. We measure and fit these correlation functions in simulations of $Λ$CDM, DGP, and $f(R)$ cosmologies and, by extracting the characteristic parameters of each model, we show that these theories can be distinguished from General Relativity using these measurements. We present forecasts showing that with sufficiently large data samples, this analysis technique is a competitive probe that can help place limits on allowed deviations from GR. For example, a peculiar velocity survey reaching to $z=0.5$ with $20\%$ distance accuracy would constrain model parameters to 3-$σ$ confidence limits $\log_{10}|f_{R0}| < -6.45$ for $f(R)$ gravity and $r_c > 2.88 \, c/H_0$ for nDGP, assuming a fiducial GR model.

Testing Low-Redshift Cosmic Acceleration with Large-Scale Structure

We examine the cosmological implications of measurements of the void-galaxy cross-correlation at redshift $z=0.57$ combined with baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) data at $0.1<z<2.4$. We find direct evidence of the late-time acceleration due to dark energy at $>10σ$ significance from these data alone, independent of the cosmic microwave background and supernovae. Using a nucleosynthesis prior on $Ω_bh^2$, we measure the Hubble constant to be $H_0=72.3\pm1.9\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ from BAO+voids at $z<2$, and $H_0=69.0\pm1.2\;{\rm km\,s}^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$ when adding Lyman-$α$ BAO at $z=2.34$, both independent of the CMB. Adding voids to CMB, BAO and supernova data greatly improves measurement of the dark energy equation of state, increasing the figure of merit by >40%, but remaining consistent with flat flat $Λ$ cold dark matter.

Emulators for the non-linear matter power spectrum beyond $Λ$CDM

Accurate predictions for the non-linear matter power spectrum are needed to confront theory with observations in current and near future weak lensing and galaxy clustering surveys. We propose a computationally cheap method to create an emulator for modified gravity models by utilizing existing emulators for $Λ$CDM. Using a suite of $N$-body simulations we construct a fitting function for the enhancement of both the linear and non-linear matter power spectrum in the commonly studied Hu-Sawicki $f(R)$ gravity model valid for wave-numbers $k \lesssim 5-10\, h\text{Mpc}^{-1}$ and redshifts $z \lesssim 3$. We show that the cosmology dependence of this enhancement is relatively weak so that our fit, using simulations coming from only one cosmology, can be used to get accurate predictions for other cosmological parameters. We also show that the cosmology dependence can, if needed, be included by using linear theory, approximate $N$-body simulations (such as COLA) and semi-analytical tools like the halo model. Our final fit can easily be combined with any emulator or semi-analytical models for the non-linear $Λ$CDM power spectrum to accurately, and quickly, produce a non-linear power spectrum for this particular modified gravity model. The method we use can be applied to fairly cheaply construct an emulator for other modified gravity models. As an application of our fitting formula we use it to compute Fisher-forecasts for how well galaxy clustering and weak lensing in a Euclid-like survey will be at constraining modifications of gravity.

Accurate halo-model matter power spectra with dark energy, massive neutrinos and modified gravitational forces

We present an accurate non-linear matter power spectrum prediction scheme for a variety of extensions to the standard cosmological paradigm, which uses the tuned halo model previously developed in Mead (2015b). We consider dark energy models that are both minimally and non-minimally coupled, massive neutrinos and modified gravitational forces with chameleon and Vainshtein screening mechanisms. In all cases we compare halo-model power spectra to measurements from high-resolution simulations. We show that the tuned halo model method can predict the non-linear matter power spectrum measured from simulations of parameterised $w(a)$ dark energy models at the few per cent level for $k<10\,h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$, and we present theoretically motivated extensions to cover non-minimally coupled scalar fields, massive neutrinos and Vainshtein screened modified gravity models that result in few per cent accurate power spectra for $k<10\,h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$. For chameleon screened models we achieve only 10 per cent accuracy for the same range of scales. Finally, we use our halo model to investigate degeneracies between different extensions to the standard cosmological model, finding that the impact of baryonic feedback on the non-linear matter power spectrum can be considered independently of modified gravity or massive neutrino extensions. In contrast, considering the impact of modified gravity and massive neutrinos independently results in biased estimates of power at the level of 5 per cent at scales $k>0.5\,h\mathrm{Mpc}^{-1}$.
