Extension of the Generalized Hydrodynamics to the Dimensional Crossover Regime

In an effort to address integrability breaking in cold gas experiments, we extend the integrable hydrodynamics of the 1d Lieb-Liniger model with two additional components representing the population of atoms in the first and second transverse excited states, thus enabling a description of quasi-1d condensates. Collisions between different components are accounted for through the inclusion of a Boltzmann-type collision integral in the hydrodynamic equation. Contrary to standard generalized hydrodynamics, our extended model captures thermalization of the condensate at a rate consistent with experimental observations from a quantum Newton's cradle setup.

Two-point phase correlations of a one-dimensional bosonic Josephson junction

We realize a one-dimensional Josephson junction using quantum degenerate Bose gases in a tunable double well potential on an atom chip. Matter wave interferometry gives direct access to the relative phase field, which reflects the interplay of thermally driven fluctuations and phase locking due to tunneling. The thermal equilibrium state is characterized by probing the full statistical distribution function of the two-point phase correlation. Comparison to a stochastic model allows to measure the coupling strength and temperature and hence a full characterization of the system.

Monotonicity properties of blow-up time for nonlinear Schrödinger equation: numerical tests

We consider the focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation, in the $L^2$-critical and supercritical cases. We investigate numerically the dependence of the blow-up time on a parameter in three cases: dependence upon the coupling constant, when the initial data are fixed; dependence upon the strength of a quadratic oscillation in the initial data when the equation and the initial profile are fixed; finally, dependence upon a damping factor when the initial data are fixed. It turns out that in most situations monotonicity in the evolution of the blow-up time does not occur. In the case of quadratic oscillations in the initial data, with critical nonlinearity, monotonicity holds; this is proven analytically.
