Bi2W2O9: a potentially antiferroelectric Aurivillius phase

Ferroelectric tungsten-based Aurivillius oxides are naturally stable superlattice structures, in which A-site deficient perovskite blocks [WnO3n+1]-2 (n = 1, 2, 3, ...) interleave with fluorite-like bismuth oxide layers [Bi2O2]+2 along the c -axis. In the n = 2 Bi2W2O9 phase, an in-plane antipolar distortion dominates but there has been controversy as to the ground state symmetry. Here we show, using a combination of first-principles density functional theory calculations and experiments, that the ground state is a non-polar phase of Pnab symmetry. We explore the energetics of metastable phases and the potential for antiferroelectricity in this n=2 Aurivillius phase.

On the microscopic mechanisms behind hyperferroelectricity

Hyperferroelectrics are receiving a growing interest thanks to their unique property to retain a spontaneous polarization even in presence of a depolarizing field. Nevertheless, general microscopic mechanisms driving hyperferroelectricity, which is ascribed to the softening of a polar $LO$ mode, are still missing. Here, by means of phonons calculations and force constants analysis in two class of hyperferroelectrics, the ABO$_3$-LiNbO3-type systems and the prototypical hexagonal-ABC systems, we unveiled common features in the dynamical properties of a hyperferroelectric behind such $LO$ instability: negative or vanishing on-site force constant associated to the cation driving the $LO$ polar distortion, and destabilizing cation-anion interactions, both induced by short-range forces. We also predict possible enhancement of the hyperferroelectric properties by applying an external positive pressure; pressure strengthens the destabilizing short-range interactions. Particularly, the increase in the mode effective charges associated to the unstable $LO$ mode under pressure suggests an eventual enhancement of the $D$=0 polarization under compressive strain.

Rashba spin-splitting in ferroelectric oxides: from rationalizing to engineering

Ferroelectric Rashba semiconductors (FERSC), in which Rashba spin-splitting can be controlled and reversed by an electric field, have recently emerged as a new class of functional materials useful for spintronic applications. The development of concrete devices based on such materials is, however, still hampered by the lack of robust FERSC compounds. Here, we show that the coexistence of large spontaneous polarisation and sizeable spin-orbit coupling is not sufficient to have strong Rashba effects and clarify why simple ferroelectric oxide perovskites with transition metal at the B-site are typically not suitable FERSC candidates. By rationalizing how this limitation can be by-passed through band engineering of the electronic structure in layered perovskites, we identify the Bi$_2$WO$_6$ Aurivillius crystal as the first robust ferroelectric with large and reversible Rashba spin-splitting, that can even be substantially doped without losing its ferroelectric properties. Importantly, we highlight that a unidirectional spin-orbit field arises in layered Bi$_2$WO$_6$, resulting in a protection against spin-decoherence.We highlight moreover that a unidirectional spin-orbit field arises in Bi$_2$WO$_6$, in which the spin-texture is so protected against spin-decoherence.

First principles characterization of the P2_1ab ferroelectric phase of Bi2WO6

The structural, dielectric, dynamical, elastic, piezoelectric and nonlinear optical (second-order susceptibility and Pockels tensors) properties of Bi2$WO6 in its P2_1ab ferroelectric ground state are determined using density functional theory. The calculation of infrared and Raman spectra on single crystal allowed us to clarify the assignment of experimental phonon modes, considering the good agreement between the calculated and the experimental Raman spectra obtained on polycrystal. The calculation of the elastic constants confirms the elastic stability of the crystal and allow us to estimate the Young and shear moduli of polycrystalline samples. The piezoelectric constants have significant intrinsic values comparable to those of prototypical ABO3 ferroelectrics. The electro-optic response is strongly dominated by the ionic contribution of transverse optic modes, yielding sizable Pockels coefficients around 9 pm/V along the polar direction.

First-principles study of the ferroelectric Aurivillius phase Bi2WO6

In order to better understand the reconstructive ferroelectric-paraelectric transition of Bi2WO6, which is unusual within the Aurivillius family of compounds, we performed first principles calculations of the dielectric and dynamical properties on two possible high-temperature paraelectic structures: the monoclinic phase of A2/m symmetry observed experimentally and the tetragonal phase of I4/mmm symmetry, common to most Aurivillius phase components. Both paraelectric structures exhibits various unstable modes, which after their condensation bring the system toward more stable structures of lower symmetry. The calculations confirms that, starting from the paraelectric A2/m phase at high temperature, the system must undergo a reconstructive transition to reach the P2_1ab ferroelectric ground state.
