Attenuation of Several Common Building Materials in Millimeter-Wave Frequency Bands: 28, 73 and 91 GHz

Future cellular systems will make use of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequency bands. Many users in these bands are located indoors, i.e., inside buildings, homes, and offices. Typical building material attenuations in these high frequency ranges are of interest for link budget calculations. In this paper, we report on a collaborative measurement campaign to find the attenuation of several typical building materials in three potential mmWave bands (28, 73, 91 GHz). Using directional antennas, we took multiple measurements at multiple locations using narrow-band and wide-band signals, and averaged out residual small-scale fading effects. Materials include clear glass, drywall (plasterboard), plywood, acoustic ceiling tile, and cinder blocks. Specific attenuations range from approximately 0.5 dB/cm for ceiling tile at 28 GHz to approximately 19 dB/cm for clear glass at 91 GHz.

Spatial Indexing for System-Level Evaluation of 5G Heterogeneous Cellular Networks

System level simulations of large 5G networks are essential to evaluate and design algorithms related to network issues such as scheduling, mobility management, interference management, and cell planning. In this paper, we look back to the idea of spatial indexing and its advantages, applications, and future potentials in accelerating large 5G network simulations. We introduce a multi-level inheritance based architecture which is used to index all elements of a heterogeneous network (HetNet) on a single geometry tree. Then, we define spatial queries to accelerate searches in distance, azimuth, and elevation. We demonstrate that spatial indexing can accelerate location-based searches by 3 orders of magnitude. Further, the proposed design is implemented as an open source platform freely available to all.

A Multiband OFDMA Heterogeneous Network for Millimeter Wave 5G Wireless Applications

Emerging fifth generation (5G) wireless networks require massive bandwidth in higher frequency bands, extreme network densities, and flexibility of supporting multiple wireless technologies in order to provide higher data rates and seamless coverage. It is expected that utilization of the large bandwidth in the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band and deployment of heterogeneous networks (HetNets) will help address the data rate requirements of 5G networks. However, high pathloss and shadowing in the mmWave frequency band, strong interference in the HetNets due to massive network densification, and coor- dination of various air interfaces are challenges that must be addressed. In this paper, we consider a relay-based multiband orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) HetNet in which mmWave small cells are deployed within the service area of macro cells. Specifically, we attempt to exploit the distinct propagation characteristics of mmWave bands (i.e., 60 GHz- the V-band - and 70-80 GHz -the E-band-) and the Long Term Evolution (LTE) band to maximize overall data rate of the network via efficient resource allocation. The problem is solved using a modified dual decomposition approach and then a low complexity greedy solution based on iterative activity selection algorithm is presented. Simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms conventional schemes.

Beamforming for Simultaneous Wireless Information and Power Transfer in Two-Way Relay Channels

This paper studies simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) systems in two-way relaying (TWR) channels. Here, two source nodes receive information and energy simultaneously via power splitting (PS) from the signals sent by a multi-antenna relay node. Our objective is to maximize the weighted sum of the harvested energy at two source nodes subject to quality of service (QoS) constraints and the relay power constraints. Three well-known and practical two-way relay strategies are considered, i.e., amplify-and-forward (AF), bit level XOR based decode-and-forward (DF-XOR) and symbol level superposition coding based DF (DF-SUP). For each relaying strategy, we formulate the joint energy transmit beamforming and PS ratios optimization as a nonconvex quadratically constrained problem. To find a closed-form solution of the formulated problem, we decouple the primal problem into two subproblems. In the first problem, we intend to optimize beamforming vector for a given PS ratio. In the second subproblem, we optimize the PS ratio with a given beamforming vector. It is worth noting that although the corresponding subproblem are nonconvex, the optimal solution of each subproblem can still be found by using certain techniques. We provide numerical results that demonstrate the advantage of adapting the different relaying strategies and weighted factors to harvest energy in two-way relaying channel.

Joint Data Detection and Phase Noise Mitigation for Light Field Video Transmission in MIMO-OFDM Systems

Previous studies in the literature for video transmission over wireless communication systems focused on combating the effects of additive channel noise and fading channels without taking the impairments in the physical layer such as phase noise (PHN) into account. Oscillator phase noise impairs the performance of multi-input multi-output- orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) systems in providing high data rates for video applications and may lead to decoding failure. In this paper, we propose a light field (LF) video transmission system in wireless channels, and analyze joint data detection and phase mitigation in MIMO-OFDM systems for LF video transmission. The signal model and rate-distortion (RD) model for LF video transmission in the presence of multiple PHNs are discussed. Moreover, we propose an iterative algorithm based on the extended Kalman filter for joint data detection and PHN tracking. Numerical results show that the proposed detector can significantly improve the average bit-error rate (BER) and peak-to-noise ratio (PSNR) performance for LF video transmission compared to existing algorithms. Moreover, the BER and PSNR performance of the proposed system is closer to that of the ideal case of perfect PHN estimation. Finally, it is demonstrated that the proposed system model and algorithm are well suited for LF video transmission in wireless channels.

Superimposed Signaling Inspired Channel Estimation in Full-Duplex Systems

Residual self-interference (SI) cancellation in the digital baseband is an important problem in full-duplex (FD) communication systems. In this paper, we propose a new technique for estimating the SI and communication channels in a FD communication system, which is inspired from superimposed signalling. In our proposed technique, we add a constant real number to each constellation point of a conventional modulation constellation to yield asymmetric shifted modulation constellations with respect to the origin. We show mathematically that such constellations can be used for bandwidth efficient channel estimation without ambiguity. We propose an expectation maximization (EM) estimator for use with the asymmetric shifted modulation constellations. We derive a closed-form lower bound for the mean square error (MSE) of the channel estimation error, which allows us to find the minimum shift energy needed for accurate channel estimation in a given FD communication system. The simulation results show that the proposed technique outperforms the data-aided channel estimation method, under the condition that the pilots use the same extra energy as the shift, both in terms of MSE of channel estimation error and bit error rate. The proposed technique is also robust to an increasing power of the SI signal.

High Rate/Low Complexity Space-Time Block Codes for 2x2 Reconfigurable MIMO Systems

In this paper, we propose a full-rate full-diversity space-time block code (STBC) for 2x2 reconfigurable multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems that require a low complexity maximum likelihood (ML) detector. We consider a transmitter equipped with a linear antenna array where each antenna element can be independently configured to create a directive radiation pattern toward a selected direction. This property of transmit antennas allow us to increase the data rate of the system, while reducing the computational complexity of the receiver. The proposed STBC achieves a coding rate of two in a 2x2 MIMO system and can be decoded via an ML detector with a complexity of order M, where M is the cardinality of the transmitted symbol constellation. Our simulations demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed code compared to existing STBCs in the literature.

High-Rate Space Coding for Reconfigurable 2x2 Millimeter-Wave MIMO Systems

Millimeter-wave links are of a line-of-sight nature. Hence, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating in the millimeter-wave band may not achieve full spatial diversity or multiplexing. In this paper, we utilize reconfigurable antennas and the high antenna directivity in the millimeter-wave band to propose a rate-two space coding design for 2x2 MIMO systems. The proposed scheme can be decoded with a low complexity maximum-likelihood detector at the receiver and yet it can enhance the bit-error-rate performance of millimeter-wave systems compared to traditional spatial multiplexing schemes, such as the Vertical Bell Laboratories Layered Space-Time Architecture (VBLAST). Using numerical simulations, we demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed code and show its superiority compared to existing rate-two space-time block codes.

Hybrid Millimeter-Wave Systems: A Novel Paradigm for HetNets

Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) are known to enhance the bandwidth efficiency and throughput of wireless networks by more effectively utilizing the network resources. However, the higher density of users and access points in HetNets introduces significant inter-user interference that needs to be mitigated through complex and sophisticated interference cancellation schemes. Moreover, due to significant channel attenuation and presence of hardware impairments, e.g., phase noise and amplifier nonlinearities, the vast bandwidth in the millimeter-wave band has not been fully utilized to date. In order to enable the development of multi-Gigabit per second wireless networks, we introduce a novel millimeter-wave HetNet paradigm, termed hybrid HetNet, which exploits the vast bandwidth and propagation characteristics in the 60 GHz and 70-80 GHz bands to reduce the impact of interference in HetNets. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the performance advantage of hybrid HetNets with respect to traditional networks. Next, two specific transceiver structures that enable hand-offs from the 60 GHz band, i.e., the V-band to the 70-80 GHz band, i.e., the E-band, and vice versa are proposed. Finally, the practical and regulatory challenges for establishing a hybrid HetNet are outlined.

Channel Estimation and Optimal Training Design for Correlated MIMO Two-Way Relay Systems in Colored Environment

In this paper, while considering the impact of antenna correlation and the interference from neighboring users, we analyze channel estimation and training sequence design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) two-way relay (TWR) systems. To this end, we propose to decompose the bidirectional transmission links into two phases, i.e., the multiple access (MAC) phase and the broadcasting (BC) phase. By considering the Kronecker-structured channel model, we derive the optimal linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) channel estimators. The corresponding training designs for the MAC and BC phases are then formulated and solved to improve channel estimation accuracy. For the general scenario of training sequence design for both phases, two iterative training design algorithms are proposed that are verified to produce training sequences that result in near optimal channel estimation performance. Furthermore, for specific practical scenarios, where the covariance matrices of the channel or disturbances are of particular structures, the optimal training sequence design guidelines are derived. In order to reduce training overhead, the minimum required training length for channel estimation in both the MAC and BC phases are also derived. Comprehensive simulations are carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed training designs.

Channel, Phase Noise, and Frequency Offset in OFDM Systems: Joint Estimation, Data Detection, and Hybrid Cramer-Rao Lower Bound

Oscillator phase noise (PHN) and carrier frequency offset (CFO) can adversely impact the performance of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems, since they can result in inter carrier interference and rotation of the signal constellation. In this paper, we propose an expectation conditional maximization (ECM) based algorithm for joint estimation of channel, PHN, and CFO in OFDM systems. We present the signal model for the estimation problem and derive the hybrid Cramer-Rao lower bound (HCRB) for the joint estimation problem. Next, we propose an iterative receiver based on an extended Kalman filter for joint data detection and PHN tracking. Numerical results show that, compared to existing algorithms, the performance of the proposed ECM-based estimator is closer to the derived HCRB and outperforms the existing estimation algorithms at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). In addition, the combined estimation algorithm and iterative receiver are more computationally efficient than existing algorithms and result in improved average uncoded and coded bit error rate (BER) performance.

Enhanced List-Based Group-Wise Overloaded Receiver with Application to Satellite Reception

The market trends towards the use of smaller dish antennas for TV satellite receivers, as well as the growing density of broadcasting satellites in orbit require the application of robust adjacent satellite interference (ASI) cancellation algorithms at the receivers. The wider beamwidth of a small size dish and the growing number of satellites in orbit impose an overloaded scenario, i.e., a scenario where the number of transmitting satellites exceeds the number of receiving antennas. For such a scenario, we present a two stage receiver to enhance signal detection from the satellite of interest, i.e., the satellite that the dish is pointing to, while reducing interference from neighboring satellites. Towards this objective, we propose an enhanced List-based Group-wise Search Detection (LGSD) receiver architecture that takes into account the spatially correlated additive noise and uses the signal-to-interference-plus noise ratio (SINR) maximization criterion to improve detection performance. Simulations show that the proposed receiver structure enhances the performance of satellite systems in the presence of ASI when compared to existing methods.

Interference Mitigating Satellite Broadcast Receiver using Reduced Complexity List-Based Detection in Correlated Noise

The recent commercial trends towards using smaller dish antennas for satellite receivers, and the growing density of broadcasting satellites, necessitate the application of robust adjacent satellite interference (ASI) cancellation schemes. This orbital density growth along with the wider beamwidth of a smaller dish have imposed an overloaded scenario at the satellite receiver, where the number of transmitting satellites exceeds the number of receiving elements at the dish antenna. To ensure successful operation in this practical scenario, we propose a satellite receiver that enhances signal detection from the desired satellite by mitigating the interference from neighboring satellites. Towards this objective, we propose a reduced complexity list-based group-wise search detection (RC-LGSD) receiver under the assumption of spatially correlated additive noise. To further enhance detection performance, the proposed satellite receiver utilizes a newly designed whitening filter to remove the spatial correlation amongst the noise parameters, while also applying a preprocessor that maximizes the signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Extensive simulations under practical scenarios show that the proposed receiver enhances the performance of satellite broadcast systems in the presence of ASI compared to existing methods.

Overloaded Satellite Receiver Using SIC with Hybrid Beamforming and ML Detection

In this paper, a new receiver structure that is intended to detect the signals from multiple adjacent satellites in the presence of other interfering satellites is proposed. We tackle the worst case interference conditions, i.e., it is assumed that uncoded signals that fully overlap in frequency arrive at a multiple-element small-size parabolic antenna in a spatially correlated noise environment. The proposed successive interference cancellation (SIC) receiver, denoted by SIC Hy/ML, employs hybrid beamforming and disjoint maximum likelihood (ML) detection. Depending on the individual signals spatial position, the proposed SIC Hy/ML scheme takes advantage of two types of beamformers: a maximum ratio combining (MRC) beamformer and a compromised array response (CAR) beamformer. The performance of the proposed receiver is compared to an SIC receiver that uses only MRC beamforming scheme with ML detection for all signals, a joint ML detector, and a minimum mean square error detector. It is found that SIC Hy/ML outperforms the other schemes by a large margin.

Training-Based Synchronization and Channel Estimation in AF Two-Way Relaying Networks

Two-way relaying networks (TWRNs) allow for more bandwidth efficient use of the available spectrum since they allow for simultaneous information exchange between two users with the assistance of an intermediate relay node. However, due to superposition of signals at the relay node, the received signal at the user terminals is affected by \emph{multiple impairments}, i.e., channel gains, timing offsets, and carrier frequency offsets, that need to be jointly estimated and compensated. This paper presents a training-based system model for amplify-and-forward (AF) TWRNs in the presence of multiple impairments and proposes maximum likelihood and differential evolution based algorithms for joint estimation of these impairments. The Cramer-Rao lower bounds (CRLBs) for the joint estimation of multiple impairments are derived. A minimum mean-square error based receiver is then proposed to compensate the effect of multiple impairments and decode each user's signal. Simulation results show that the performance of the proposed estimators is very close to the derived CRLBs at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise-ratios. It is also shown that the bit-error rate performance of the overall AF TWRN is close to a TWRN that is based on assumption of perfect knowledge of the synchronization parameters.

Channel Estimation, Carrier Recovery, and Data Detection in the Presence of Phase Noise in OFDM Relay Systems

Due to its time-varying nature, oscillator phase noise can significantly degrade the performance of channel estimation, carrier recovery, and data detection blocks in high-speed wireless communication systems. In this paper, we analyze joint channel, \emph{carrier frequency offset (CFO)}, and phase noise estimation plus data detection in \emph{orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)} relay systems. To achieve this goal, a detailed transmission framework involving both training and data symbols is presented. In the data transmission phase, a comb-type OFDM symbol consisting of both pilots and data symbols is proposed to track phase noise over an OFDM frame. Next, a novel algorithm that applies the training symbols to jointly estimate the channel responses, CFO, and phase noise based on the maximum a posteriori criterion is proposed. Additionally, a new \emph{hybrid Cramér-Rao lower bound} for evaluating the performance of channel estimation and carrier recovery algorithms in OFDM relay networks is derived. Finally, an iterative receiver for joint phase noise estimation and data detection at the destination node is derived. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the application of the proposed estimation and receiver blocks significantly improves the performance of OFDM relay networks in the presence of phase noise.

Improving Bandwidth Efficiency in E-band Communication Systems

The allocation of a large amount of bandwidth by regulating bodies in the 70/80 GHz band, i.e., the E-band, has opened up new potentials and challenges for providing affordable and reliable Gigabit per second wireless point-to-point links. This article first reviews the available bandwidth and licensing regulations in the E-band. Subsequently, different propagation models, e.g., the ITU-R and Cane models, are compared against measurement results and it is concluded that to meet specific availability requirements, E-band wireless systems may need to be designed with larger fade margins compared to microwave systems. A similar comparison is carried out between measurements and models for oscillator phase noise. It is confirmed that phase noise characteristics, that are neglected by the models used for narrowband systems, need to be taken into account for the wideband systems deployed in the E-band. Next, a new multi-input multi-output (MIMO) transceiver design, termed continuous aperture phased (CAP)-MIMO, is presented. Simulations show that CAP-MIMO enables E-band systems to achieve fiber-optic like throughputs. Finally, it is argued that full-duplex relaying can be used to greatly enhance the coverage of E-band systems without sacrificing throughput, thus, facilitating their application in establishing the backhaul of heterogeneous networks.

Joint Phase Noise Estimation and Data Detection in Coded MIMO Systems

In this paper, the problem of joint oscillator phase noise (PHN) estimation and data detection for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems using bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) is analyzed. A new MIMO receiver that iterates between the estimator and the detector, based on the expectation-maximization (EM) framework, is proposed. It is shown that at high signal-to-noise ratios, a maximum a posteriori estimator (MAP) can be used to carry out the maximization step of the EM algorithm. Moreover, to reduce the computational complexity of the proposed EM algorithm, a soft decision-directed extended Kalman filter-smoother (EKFS) is applied instead of the MAP estimator to track the PHN parameters. Numerical results show that by combining the proposed EKFS based approach with an iterative detector that employs low density parity check (LDPC) codes, PHN can be accurately tracked. Simulations also demonstrate that compared to existing algorithms, the proposed iterative receiver can significantly enhance the performance of MIMO systems in the presence of PHN.

Phase Noise Estimation for Uncoded/Coded SISO and MIMO Systems

Non-ideal oscillators both at the transmitter and the receiver introduces time varying phase noise which interacts with the transmitted data in a non-linear fashion. Phase noise becomes a detrimental problem and needs to be estimated and compensated. In this thesis receiver algorithms are derived and evaluated to mitigate the effects of the phase noise in digital communication systems. In Chapter 3 phase noise estimation in single-input single-output (SISO) systems is investigated. First, a hard decision directed extended Kalman filter (EKF) is applied to an uncoded system. Next, an iterative receiver algorithm performing code-aided turbo synchronization is derived using the expectation maximization (EM) framework for a coded system. Two soft-decision directed estimators in the literature based on Kalman filtering are evaluated. Low density parity check (LDPC) codes are proposed to calculate marginal a posteriori probabilities and to construct soft decision symbols. Error rate performance of both estimators are compared through simulations. In Chapter 4 phase noise estimation in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems is investigated. First, a low complexity hard decision directed EKF is applied to an uncoded system. Next, a new receiver algorithm based on the EM framework for joint estimation and detection in coded MIMO systems is proposed. A low complexity soft decision directed extended Kalman filter and smoother (EKFS) that tracks the phase noise parameters over a frame is proposed in order to carry out the maximization step. The proposed EKFS based approach is combined with an iterative detector that utilizes bit interleaved coded modulation and employs LDPC codes. Finally, simulation results confirm that the error rate performance of the proposed EM-based approach is close to the scenario of perfect knowledge of phase noise at low-to-medium signal-to-noise ratios.
