Gravity of a noncanonical global monopole: conical topology and compactification

We obtain solutions of Einstein's equations describing gravitational field outside a noncanonical global monopole with cosmological constant. In particular, we consider two models of k-monopoles: the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) and the power-law types, and study their corresponding exterior gravitational fields. For each model we found two types of solutions. The first of which are global k-monopole black hole with conical global topology. These are generalizations of the Barriola-Vilenkin solution of global monopole. The appearance of noncanonical kinetic terms does not modify the critical symmetry-breaking scale, $η_{crit}$, but it does affect the corresponding horizon(s). The second type of solution is compactification, whose topology is a product of two $2$-dimensional spaces with constant curvatures; ${\mathcal Y}_4\rightarrow {\mathcal Z}_2\times S^2$, with ${\mathcal Y}, {\mathcal Z}$ can be de Sitter, Minkowski, or Anti-de Sitter, and $S^2$ is the $2$-sphere. We investigate all possible compactifications and show that the nonlinearity of kinetic terms opens up new channels which are otherwise non-existent. For $Λ=0$ four-dimensional geometry, we conjecture that these compactification channels are their (possible) non-static super-critical states, right before they undergo topological inflation.

Some exact BPS solutions for exotic vortices and monopoles

We present several analytical solutions of BPS vortices and monopoles in the generalized Abelian Maxwell-Higgs and Yang-Mills-Higgs theories, respectively. These models have recently been extensively studied and several exact solutions have already been obtained in \cite{Casana:2014qfa, Casana:2013lna}. In each theory, the dynamics is controlled by the additional two positive scalar-field-dependent functions, $f(|ϕ|)$ and $w(|ϕ|)$. For the case of vortices, we work in the ordinary symmetry-breaking Higgs potential, while for the case of monopoles we have the ordinary condition of the Prasad-Sommerfield limit. Our results generalize that of exact solutions found previously. We also present solutions for BPS vortices with higher winding number. These solutions suffer from the condition that $w(|ϕ|)$ has negative value at some finite range of $r$, but we argue that since it satisfies the weaker positive-value conditions then the corresponding energy density is still positive-definite and, thus, they are acceptable BPS solutions.

Flux compactifications in Einstein-Born-Infeld theories

We investigate the flux compactification mechanism in simple toy models of Einstein-Born-Infeld theories. These are the direct generalizations of the Einstein-Maxwell flux compactifications that recently gained fame as a toy model for tunneling in the landscape. Our investigation reveals that the Born-Infeld form does not significantly modify the qualitative result of the Einstein-Maxwell theory. for the case of Einstein-Higgs theory, however, we found that the effect of Born-Infeld nonlinearity is to render all q>1 extradimensional compactification unstable against semiclassical tunneling to nothing.

On Bogomol'nyi Equations of Classical Solutions

We review the Bogomol'nyi equations and investigate an alternative route in obtaining it. It can be shown that the known BPS equations can be derived directly from the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equations via separation of variables, without having to appeal to the Hamiltonian. We apply this technique to the Dirac-Born-Infeld solitons and obtained the corresponding equations and the potentials. This method is suitable for obtaining the first-order equations and determining the allowed potentials for noncanonical defects.

Higher-dimensional DBI Solitons

We study the theory of a (global) texture with DBI-like Lagrangian, the higher-dimensional generalization of the previously known chiral Born-Infeld theory. This model evades Derrick's theorem and enables the existence of solitonic solutions in arbitrary D-dimensions. We explicitly show the solutions in spherically-symmetric ansatz. These are examples of extended topological solitons. We then investigate the coupling of this theory to gravity, and obtain the static self-gravitating solitonic p-brane solutions. These non-singular branes can be identified as the smooth versions of cosmic p-branes which, in the thin-wall limit, suffers from naked singularities.

On DBI Textures with Generalized Hopf Fibration

In this letter we show numerical existence of O(4) Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) Textures living in (N +1) dimensional spacetime. These defects are characterized by $S^N\rightarrow S^3$ mapping, generalizing the well-known Hopf fibration into ?$π_N (S^3)$, for all N > 3. The nonlinear nature of DBI kinetic term provides stability against size perturbation and thus renders the defects having natural scale.

Bubbles from Nothing

Within the framework of flux compactifications, we construct an instanton describing the quantum creation of an open universe from nothing. The solution has many features in common with the smooth 6d bubble of nothing solutions discussed recently, where the spacetime is described by a 4d compactification of a 6d Einstein-Maxwell theory on S^2 stabilized by flux. The four-dimensional description of this instanton reduces to that of Hawking and Turok. The choice of parameters uniquely determines all future evolution, which we additionally find to be stable against bubble of nothing instabilities.

Decay of flux vacua to nothing

We construct instanton solutions describing the decay of flux compactifications of a $6d$ gauge theory by generalizing the Kaluza-Klein bubble of nothing. The surface of the bubble is described by a smooth magnetically charged solitonic brane whose asymptotic flux is precisely that responsible for stabilizing the 4d compactification. We describe several instances of bubble geometries for the various vacua occurring in a $6d$ Einstein-Maxwell theory namely, AdS_4 x S^2, R^{1,3} x S^2, and dS_4 x S^2. Unlike conventional solutions, the bubbles of nothing introduced here occur where a {\em two}-sphere compactification manifold homogeneously degenerates.
