UAV Trajectory Planning for AoI-Minimal Data Collection in UAV-Aided IoT Networks by Transformer

Maintaining freshness of data collection in Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks has attracted increasing attention. By taking into account age-of-information (AoI), we investigate the trajectory planning problem of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) that is used to aid a cluster-based IoT network. An optimization problem is formulated to minimize the total AoI of the collected data by the UAV from the ground IoT network. Since the total AoI of the IoT network depends on the flight time of the UAV and the data collection time at hovering points, we jointly optimize the selection of hovering points and the visiting order to these points. We exploit the state-of-the-art transformer and the weighted A*, which is a path search algorithm, to design a machine learning algorithm to solve the formulated problem. The whole UAV-IoT system is fed into the encoder network of the proposed algorithm, and the algorithm's decoder network outputs the visiting order to ground clusters. Then, the weighted A* is used to find the hovering point for each cluster in the ground IoT network. Simulation results show that the trained model by the proposed algorithm has a good generalization ability to generate solutions for IoT networks with different numbers of ground clusters, without the need to retrain the model. Furthermore, results show that our proposed algorithm can find better UAV trajectories with the minimum total AoI when compared to other algorithms.

Performance Analysis and Optimization of Bidirectional Overlay Cognitive Radio Networks with Hybrid-SWIPT

This paper considers a cooperative cognitive radio network with two primary users (PUs) and two secondary users (SUs) that enables two-way communications of primary and secondary systems in conjunction with non-linear energy harvesting based simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). With the considered network, SUs are able to realize their communications over the licensed spectrum while extending relay assistance to the PUs. The overall bidirectional end-to-end transmission takes place in four phases, which include both energy harvesting (EH) and information transfer. A non-linear energy harvester with a hybrid SWIPT scheme is adopted in which both power-splitting and time-switching EH techniques are used. The SUs aid in relay cooperation by performing an amplify-and-forward operation, whereas selection combining technique is adopted at the PUs to extract the intended signal from multiple received signals broadcasted by the SUs. Accurate outage probability expressions for the primary and secondary links are derived under the Nakagami-$m$ fading environment. Further, the system behavior is analyzed with respect to achievable system throughput and energy efficiency. Since the performance of the considered system is strongly affected by the spectrum sharing factor and hybrid SWIPT parameters, particle swarm optimization is implemented to optimize the system parameters so as to maximize the system throughput and energy efficiency. Simulation results are provided to corroborate the performance analysis and give useful insights into the system behavior concerning various system/channel parameters.

mmWave Doubly-Massive-MIMO Communications Enhanced with an Intelligent Reflecting Surface

As a means to control wireless propagation environments, the use of emerging and novel intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) is envisioned to enhance and broaden many applications in future wireless networks. This paper is concerned with a point-to-point IRS-assisted millimeter-wave (mmWave) system in which the IRS consists of multiple subsurfaces, each having the same number of passive reflecting elements, whereas both the transmitter and receiver are equipped with massive antenna arrays. Under the scenario of having very large numbers of antennas at both transmit and receive ends, the achievable rate of the system is derived. Furthermore, with the objective of maximizing the achievable rate, the paper presents optimal solutions of power allocation, precoding/combining, and IRS's phase shifts. Then it is shown that when the number of reflecting elements at each subsurface is very large, the number of favorable and controllable propagation paths provided by the IRS is simply equal to the number of subsurfaces while the received signal-to-noise ratio corresponding to each of the favorable paths increases quadratically with the number of reflecting elements. In addition, the problem of minimizing the transmit power subject to the rate constraint is analyzed for the scenario without direct paths in the pure LOS propagation. Finally, numerical results are provided to corroborate the obtained analysis.

Performance of Wireless Powered Cognitive Radio Sensor Networks With Nonlinear Energy Harvester

This letter analyzes the performance of simultaneous wireless information-and-power transfer (SWIPT) in an overlay cognitive radio network (CRN) under Nakagami-$m$ fading. A pair of secondary users (SUs) is considered in which one SU facilitates relay cooperation for communications between two primary users (PUs). In return, SUs make use of primary users' signals for energy harvesting (EH) and realize their own communications. In such a network, end-to-end bidirectional communications between the two PUs and unidirectional information exchange between the SUs can be performed in three phases. A power splitting (PS) based approach is adopted for enabling SWIPT. The relaying SU applies an amplify-and-forward (AF) protocol to broadcast primary and secondary signals, whereas the PUs perform selection combining to access the active direct link. Accurate expressions of the outage probability (OP) and throughput are derived for the primary system by considering a nonlinear energy harvester at the relaying SU under Nakagami-m fading

Wireless Information and Power Transfer for IoT Applications in Overlay Cognitive Radio Networks

This paper proposes and investigates an overlay spectrum sharing system in conjunction with the simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) to enable communications for the Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Considered is a cooperative cognitive radio network, where two IoT devices (IoDs) exchange their information and also provide relay assistance to a pair of primary users (PUs). Different from most existing works, in this paper, both IoDs can harvest energy from the radio-frequency (RF) signals received from the PUs. By utilizing the harvested energy, they provide relay cooperation to PUs and realize their own communications. For harvesting energy, a time-switching (TS) based approach is adopted at both IoDs. With the proposed scheme, one round of bidirectional information exchange for both primary and IoT systems is performed in four phases, i.e., one energy harvesting (EH) phase and three information processing (IP) phases. Both IoDs rely on the decode-and-forward operation to facilitate relaying, whereas the PUs employ selection combining (SC) technique. For investigating the performance of the considered network, this paper first provides exact expressions of user outage probability (OP) for the primary and IoT systems under Nakagami-m fading. Then, by utilizing the expressions of user OP, the system throughput and energy efficiency are quantified together with the average end-to-end transmission time. Numerical and simulation results are provided to give useful insights into the system behavior and to highlight the impact of various system/channel parameters.

Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Using Linear Combining in Time-Varying Channels

Differential encoding and decoding can be employed to circumvent channel estimation in wireless relay networks. This article studies differential amplify-and-forward relaying using linear combining with arbitrary fixed combining weights in time-varying channels. An exact bit error rate (BER) analysis is obtained for this system using DBPSK modulation and over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. The analysis is verified with simulation results for several sets of combining weights and in various fading scenarios.

Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying in Time-Varying Rayleigh Fading Channels

This paper considers the performance of differential amplify-and-forward (D-AF) relaying over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. Using the auto-regressive time-series model to characterize the time-varying nature of the wireless channels, new weights for the maximum ratio combining (MRC) of the received signals at the destination are proposed. Expression for the pair-wise error probability (PEP) is provided and used to obtain an approximation of the total average bit error probability (BEP). The obtained BEP approximation clearly shows how the system performance depends on the auto-correlation of the direct and the cascaded channels and an irreducible error floor exists at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Simulation results also demonstrate that, for fast-fading channels, the new MRC weights lead to a better performance when compared to the classical combining scheme. Our analysis is verified with simulation results in different fading scenarios.

Differential Dual-Hop Relaying over Time-Varying Rayleigh-Fading Channels

This paper studies dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels with differential M-PSK modulation and non-coherent detection. For the case of "two-symbol" detection, a first order time-series model is utilized to characterize the time-varying nature of the cascaded channel. Based on this model, an exact bit error rate (BER) expression is derived and confirmed with simulation results. The obtained expression shows that the BER is related to the auto-correlation of the cascaded channel and an irreducible error floor exists at high transmit power. To overcome the error floor experienced with fast-fading, a nearly optimal multiple-symbol differential sphere detection (MSDSD) is also developed. The error performance of MSDSD is illustrated with simulation results under different fading scenarios.

Differential Dual-Hop Relaying under User Mobility

This paper studies dual-hop amplify-and-forward relaying system employing differential encoding and decoding over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. First, the convectional "two-symbol" differential detection (CDD) is theoretically analysed in terms of the bit-error-rate (BER). The obtained analysis clearly shows that performance of two-symbol differential detection severely degrades in fast-fading channels and reaches an irreducible error floor at high signal-to-noise ratio region. To overcome the error floor experienced with fast-fading, a practical suboptimal "multiple-symbol" detection (MSD) is designed and its performance is theoretically analysed. The analysis of CDD and MSD are verified and illustrated with simulation results under different fading scenarios. Specifically, the obtained results show that the proposed MSD can significantly improve the system performance in fast-fading channels.

Multiple-Symbol Differential Detection for Distributed Space-Time Coding

Differential distributed space-time coding (D-DSTC) technique has been considered for relay networks to provide both diversity gain and high throughput in the absence of channel state information. Conventional differential detection (CDD) or two-symbol non-coherent detection over slow -fading channels has been examined and shown to suffer 3-4 dB loss when compared to coherent detections. Moreover, it has also been shown that the performance of CDD severely degrades in fast-fading channels and an irreducible error floor exists at high signal-to-noise ratio region. To overcome the error floor experienced with fast-fading, a nearly optimal "multiple-symbol" differential detection (MSDD) is developed in this paper. The MSDD algorithm jointly processes a larger window of received signals for detection and significantly improves the performance of D-DSTC in fast-fading channels. The error performance of the MSDD algorithm is illustrated with simulation results under different fading scenarios.

Performance of Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying in Multi-Node Wireless Communications

This paper is concerned with the performance of differential amplify-and-forward (D-AF) relaying for multi-node wireless communications over time-varying Rayleigh fading channels. A first-order auto-regressive model is utilized to characterize the time-varying nature of the channels. Based on the secondorder statistical properties of the wireless channels, a new set of combining weights is proposed for signal detection at the destination. Expression of pair-wise error probability (PEP) is provided and used to obtain the approximated total average bit error probability (BER). It is shown that the performance of the system is related to the auto-correlation of the direct and cascaded channels and an irreducible error floor exists at high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The new weights lead to a better performance when compared to the conventional combining scheme. Computer simulation is carried out in different scenarios to support the analysis.

Performance of Selection Combining for Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Over Time-Varying Channels

Selection combining (SC) at the destination for differential amplify-and-forward (AF) relaying is attractive as it does not require channel state information as compared to the semi maximum-ratio-combining (semi-MRC) while delivering close performance. Performance analysis of the SC scheme was recently reported but only for the case of slow-fading channels. This paper provides an exact average bit-error-rate (BER) of the SC scheme over a general case of time-varying Rayleigh fading channels and when the DBPSK modulation is used together with the non-coherent detection at the destination. The presented analysis is thoroughly verified with simulation results in various fading scenarios. It is shown that the performance of the system is related to the auto-correlation values of the channels. It is also shown that the performance of the SC method is very close to that of the semi-MRC method and the existence of an error floor at high signal-to-noise ratio region is inevitable in both methods. The obtained BER analysis for the SC method can also be used to approximate the BER performance of the MRC method, whose exact analytical evaluation in time-varying channels appears to be difficult.

Selection Combining for Differential Amplify-and-Forward Relaying Over Rayleigh-Fading Channel

This paper proposes and analyses selection combining (SC) at the destination for differential amplify-andforward (D-AF) relaying over slow Rayleigh-fading channels. The selection combiner chooses the link with the maximum magnitude of the decision variable to be used for non-coherent detection of the transmitted symbols. Therefore, in contrast to the maximum ratio combining (MRC), no channel information is needed at the destination. The exact average bit-error-rate (BER) of the proposed SC is derived and verified with simulation results. It is also shown that the performance of the SC method is very close to that of the MRC method, albeit with lower complexity
