A Generalized Prefix Construction for OFDM Systems Over Quasi-Static Channels

All practical OFDM systems require a prefix to eliminate inter-symbol interference at the receiver. Cyclic prefix (CP) and zero-padding are well-known prefix construction methods, the former being the most employed technique in practice due to its lower complexity. In this paper we construct an OFDM system with a generalized CP. It is shown that the proposed generalized prefix effectively makes the channel experienced by the packet different from the actual channel. Using an optimization procedure, lower bit error rates can be achieved, outperforming other prefix construction techniques. At the same time the complexity of the technique is comparable to the CP method. The presented simulation results show that the proposed technique not only outperforms the CP method, but is also more robust in the presence of channel estimation errors and mobility. The proposed method is appropriate for practical OFDM systems.

Manufacturing and the LLRF Tests of the SANAEM RFQ

The Turkish Atomic Energy Authority has been working on building an experimental proton beamline using local resources at the Saraykoy Nuclear Research and Training Center (SANAEM). The radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) was manufactured after the completion of beam dynamics and 3D electromagnetic simulation studies. The vanes were machined using a three axis CNC machine. A CMM was used for both the acceptance tests of the vanes and their assembly. Production and assembly errors were found acceptable for this cavity, the very first one developed in Turkey. The aluminum vanes were copper coated by electroplating. The coated vanes were bolted and bonded with eight screws, eight pins and two different adhesives. A silver paste was used for RF sealing and a low vapor pressure epoxy was used for vacuum isolation. First LLRF tests of the RFQ were performed using the phase shift method with a bead-pull setup, a VNA, an N-type RF coupler and a pick-up loop. Cavity quality factor was measured with 3dB method for different RF sealing stages. This study summarizes the machining, assembling and the first LLRF tests of the SANAEM RFQ.

Current Status of the SANAEM RFQ Accelerator Beamline

The design and production studies of the proton beamline of SPP, which aims to acquire know-how on proton accelerator technology thru development of man power and serves as particle accelerator technologies test bench, continue at TAEK-SANAEM as a multi-phase project. For the first phase, 20 keV protons will be accelerated to 1.3 MeV by a single piece RFQ. Currently, the beam current and stability tests are ongoing for the Inductively Coupled Plasma ion source. The measured magnetic field maps of the Low Energy Beam Transport solenoids are being used for matching various beam configurations of the ion source to the RFQ by computer simulations. The installation of the low energy diagnostics box was completed in Q1 of 2015. The production of the RFQ cavity was started with aluminum 7075-T6 which will be subsequently coated by Copper to reduce the RF (Ohmic) losses. On the RF side, the development of the hybrid power supply based on solid state and tetrode amplifiers continues. All RF transmission components have already produced with the exception of the circulator and the power coupling antenna which are in the manufacturing and design phases, respectively. The acceptance tests of the produced RF components are ongoing. This work summarizes the design, production and test phases of the above-mentioned SPP proton beamline components.

Status of the SPP RFQ project

The SPP project at TAEK will use a 352.2 MHz 4-vane Radio Frequency Quadrupole (RFQ) to accelerate H+ ions from 20 keV to 1.5 MeV. With the design already complete, the project is at the test production phase. To this effect, a so called "cold model" of 50 cm length has been produced to validate the design approach, to perform the low power RF tests and to evaluate possible production errors. This study will report on the current status of the low energy beam transport line (LEBT) and RFQ cavity of the SPP project. It will also discuss the design and manufacturing of the RF power supply and its transmission line. In addition, the test results from some of the LEBT components will be shown and the final RFQ design will be shared.

The TAC IR FEL Oscillator Facility Project

The TAC (Turkish Accelerator Center) IR FEL Oscillator facility, which has been supported by Turkish State Planning Organization (SPO) since 2006, will be based on a 15-40 MeV electron linac accompanying two different undulators with 2.5 cm and 9 cm periods in order to obtain IR FEL ranging between 2-250 microns. The electron linac will consist of two sequenced modules, each housing two 9-cell superconducting TESLA cavities for cw operation. It is planned that the TAC IR FEL facility will be completed in 2012 at Golbasi campus of Ankara University. This facility will give an opportunity to the scientists and industry to use FEL in research and development in Turkey and our region. In this study, the results of optimization studies and present plans about construction process of the facility are presented.
