Quantum Corrections to Soliton Energies

We review recent progress in the computation of leading quantum corrections to the energies of classical solitons with topological structure, including multi-soliton models in one space dimension and string configurations in three space dimensions. Taking advantage of analytic continuation techniques to efficiently organize the calculations, we show how quantum corrections affect the stability of solitons in the Shifman-Voloshin model, stabilize charged electroweak strings coupled to a heavy fermion doublet, and bind Nielsen-Olesen vortices at the classical transition between type I and type II superconductors.

Winding number dependence of quantum vortex energies at one-loop

We compute the one-loop vacuum polarization energies of Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen (ANO) vortices with topological charge $n$ in scalar electrodynamics, for the BPS case of equal gauge and scalar masses. This calculation allows us to investigate the relationship between the winding number and the quantum-corrected vortex energy, which in turn determines the stability of higher winding configurations against decay into configurations with unit winding. While the classical energy is proportional to $n$, we find that the vacuum polarization energy is negative and approximately proportional to $n-1$ with a small constant offset.

Collective Coordinates in One-Dimensional Soliton Models Revisited

We compare numerical solutions to the full field equations to simplified approaches based on implementing three collective coordinates for kink-antikink interactions within the $φ^4$ and $ϕ^6$ models in one time and one space dimensions. We particularly pursue the question whether the collective coordinate approximation substantiates the conjecture that vibrational modes are important for resonance structures to occur in kink-antikink scattering.

Isospin Invariance and the Vacuum Polarization Energy of Cosmic Strings

We corroborate the previously applied spectral approach to compute the vacuum polarization energy of string configurations in models similar to the standard model of particle physics. The central observation underlying this corroboration is the existence of a particular global isospin transformation of the string configuration. Under this transformation the single particle energies of the quantum fluctuations are invariant, while the inevitable implementation of regularization and renormalization requires operations that are not invariant. We verify numerically that all such variances eventually cancel, and that the vacuum polarization energy obtained in the spectral approach is indeed gauge invariant.

Heavy Baryons with Strangeness in a Soliton Model

We present results from a chiral soliton model calculation for the spectrum of baryons with a single heavy quark (charm or bottom) and non-zero strangeness. We treat the strange components within a three flavor collective coordinate quantization of the soliton that fully accounts for light flavor symmetry breaking. Heavy baryons emerge by binding a heavy meson to the soliton. The dynamics of this heavy meson is described by the heavy quark effective theory with finite mass effects included.

Quantum Stabilization of Cosmic Strings

In the standard model, stabilization of a classically unstable cosmic string may occur through the quantum fluctuations of a heavy fermion doublet. We review numerical results from a semiclassical expansion in a reduced version of the standard model. In this expansion the leading quantum corrections emerge at one loop level for many internal degrees of freedom. The resulting vacuum polarization energy and the binding energy of occupied fermion energy levels are of the same order, and must therefore be treated on equal footing. Populating these bound states lowers the total energy compared to the same number of free fermions. Charged strings are already stabilized for a fermion mass only somewhat larger than the top quark mass. Though obtained in a reduced version these results suggest that neither extraordinarily large fermion masses nor unrealistic couplings are required to bind a cosmic string in the standard model. Furthermore we also review results for a quantum stabilization mechanism that prevents closed Nielsen-Olesen type strings from collapsing.

On the Casimir Energy of Frequency Dependent Interactions

Vacuum polarization (or Casimir) energies can be straightforwardly computed from scattering data for static field configurations whose interactions with the fluctuating field are frequency independent. In effective theories, however, such interactions are typically frequency dependent. As a consequence, the relationship between scattering data and the Green's function is modified, which may or may not induce additional contributions to the vacuum polarization energy. We discuss several examples that naturally include frequency dependent interactions: (i) scalar electrodynamics with a static background potential, (ii) an effective theory that emerges from integrating out a heavy degree of freedom, and (iii) quantum electrodynamics coupled to a frequency dependent dielectric material. In the latter case, we argue that introducing dissipation as required by the Kramers-Kronig relations requires the consideration of the Casimir energy within a statistical mechanics formalism, while in the absence of dissipation we can work entirely within field theory, using an alternative formulation of the energy density.

Attractive Electromagnetic Casimir Stress on a Spherical Dielectric Shell

Based on calculations involving an idealized boundary condition, it has long been assumed that the stress on a spherical conducting shell is repulsive. We use the more realistic case of a Drude dielectric to show that the stress is attractive, matching the generic behavior of Casimir forces in electromagnetism. We trace the discrepancy between these two cases to interactions between the electromagnetic quantum fluctuations and the dielectric material.

Cosmic Strings Stabilized by Fermion Fluctuations

We provide a thorough exposition of recent results on the quantum stabilization of cosmic strings. Stabilization occurs through the coupling to a heavy fermion doublet in a reduced version of the standard model. The study combines the vacuum polarization energy of fermion zero-point fluctuations and the binding energy of occupied energy levels, which are of the same order in a semi-classical expansion. Populating these bound states assigns a charge to the string. Strings carrying fermion charge become stable if the Higgs and gauge fields are coupled to a fermion that is less than twice as heavy as the top quark. The vacuum remains stable in the model, because neutral strings are not energetically favored. These findings suggest that extraordinarily large fermion masses or unrealistic couplings are not required to bind a cosmic string in the standard model.

Fermion Energies in the Background of a Cosmic String

We provide a thorough exposition, including technical and numerical details, of previously published results on the quantum stabilization of cosmic strings. Stabilization occurs through the coupling to a heavy fermion doublet in a reduced version of the standard model. We combine the vacuum polarization energy of fermion zero-point fluctuations and the binding energy of occupied energy levels, which are of the same order in a semi-classical expansion. Populating these bound states assigns a charge to the string. We show that strings carrying fermion charge become stable if the electro-weak bosons are coupled to a fermion that is less than twice as heavy as the top quark. The vacuum remains stable in our model, because neutral strings are not energetically favored. These findings suggests that extraordinarily large fermion masses or unrealistic couplings are not required to bind a cosmic string in the standard model.

Stable charged cosmic strings

We study the quantum stabilization of a cosmic string by a heavy fermion doublet in a reduced version of the standard model. We show that charged strings, obtained by populating fermionic bound state levels, become stable if the electro--weak bosons are coupled to a fermion that is less than twice as heavy as the top quark. This result suggests that extraordinarily large fermion masses or unrealistic couplings are not required to bind a cosmic string in the standard model. Numerically we find the most favorable string profile to be a simple "trough" in the Higgs vev of radius $\approx 10^{-18}\,\mathrm{m}$. The vacuum remains stable in our model, because neutral strings are not energetically favored.

Wave-Packet Scattering off the Kink-Solution

We investigate the propagation of a wave--packet in the $ϕ^4$ model. We solve the time-dependent equation of motion for two distinct initial conditions: The wave-packet in a trivial vacuum background and in the background of the kink soliton solution. We extract the scattering matrix from the wave-packet in the kink background at very late times and compare it with the result from static potential scattering in the small amplitude approximation. We vary the size of the initial wave-packet to identify non-linear effects as, for example, the replacement of the center of the kink.

Gauge Invariance and Vacuum Energies of Non-Abelian String-Configurations

We improve on a method to compute the fermion contribution to the vacuum polarization energy of string-like configurations in a non-Abelian gauge theory. We establish the new method by numerically verifying the invariance under (a subset of) local gauge transformations. This also provides further support for the use of spectral methods to compute vacuum polarization energies in general. We confirm that the vacuum energy in the MS-bar renormalization scheme is tiny as compared to the mass of the fluctuating fermion field. Numerical results for the physical on-shell scheme are also presented.

Vacuum Energies of Non--Abelian String--Configurations in 3+1 Dimensions

We develop a method to compute the fermion contribution to the vacuum polarization energy of string--like configurations in a non--abelian gauge theory. This calculation has been hampered previously by a number of technical obstacles. We use gauge invariance of the energy and separation of length scales in the energy density to overcome these obstacles. We present a proof-of-principle investigation that shows that this energy is small in the MS-bar renormalization scheme. The generalization to other schemes is straightforward.

Quantum QED Flux Tubes in 2+1 and 3+1 Dimensions

We compute energies and energy densities of static electromagnetic flux tubes in three and four spacetime dimensions. Our calculation uses scattering data from the potential induced by the flux tube and imposes standard perturbative renormalization conditions. The calculation is exact to one-loop order, with no additional approximation adopted. We embed the flux tube in a configuration with zero total flux so that we can fully apply standard results from scattering theory. We find that upon choosing the same on-shell renormalization conditions, the functional dependence of the energy and energy density on the parameters of the flux tube is very similar for three and four spacetime dimensions. We compare our exact results to those obtained from the derivative and perturbation expansion approximations, and find good agreement for appropriate parameters of the flux tube. This remedies some puzzles in the prior literature.

Chiral Odd Structure Functions from a Chiral Soliton

We calculate the chiral odd quark distributions and the corresponding structure functions $h_T(x,Q^2)$ and $h_L(x,Q^2)$ within the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio chiral soliton model for the nucleon. The $Q^2$ evolution of the twist-2 contributions is performed according to the standard GLAP formalism while the twist-three piece, $\bar{h}_L(x)$, is evolved according to the large $N_C$ scheme. We carry out a comparison between the chiral odd structure functions of the proton and the neutron. At the low model scale ($Q_0^2$) we find that the leading twist effective quark distributions,$f_1^{(q)}(x,Q_0^2)$, $g_1^{(q)}(x,Q_0^2)$ and $h_T^{(q)}(x,Q_0^2)$ satisfy Soffer's inequality for both quark flavors $q=u,d$.

Strangeness Contribution to the Polarized Nucleon Structure Function $g_1(x)$

The three flavor version of the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio chiral soliton model for baryons is employed to calculate the twist-2 contribution to the polarized nucleon structure function $g_1(x)$. In particular the role of the strange quark degree of freedom as a collective excitation of the chiral soliton is investigated in the context of flavor symmetry breaking. The model prediction for $g_1(x)$ refers to a low momentum scale $Q_0^2$. The leading order corrections to the scale dependence is computed along the QCD evolution program allowing to compare with data from SLAC.

Hyperfine Splitting of Low-Lying Heavy Baryons

We calculate the next-to-leading order contribution to the masses of the heavy baryons in the bound state approach for baryons containing a heavy quark. These $1/N_C$ corrections arise when states of good spin and isospin are generated from the background soliton of the light meson fields. Our study is motivated by the previously established result that light vector meson fields are required for this soliton in order to reasonably describe the spectrum of both the light and the heavy baryons. We note that the inclusion of light vector mesons significantly improves the agreement of the predicted hyperfine splitting with experiment. A number of aspects of this somewhat complicated calculation are discussed in detail.

Nucleon Structure Functions from a Chiral Soliton

Nucleon structure functions are studied within the chiral soliton approach to the bosonized Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. The valence quark approximation is employed which is justified for moderate constituent quark masses ($\sim$ 400 MeV) as the contribution of the valence quark level dominates the predictions of nucleon properties. As examples the unpolarized structure functions for the $νp$ and ${\bar ν}p$ scattering and the structure functions entering the Gottfried sum rule are discussed. For the latter the model prediction is found to reasonably well agree with a corresponding low-scale parametrization of the empirical data.

Nucleon Structure Functions within a Chiral Soliton Model

We study nucleon structure functions within the bosonized Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model where the nucleon emerges as a chiral soliton. We discuss the model predictions on the Gottfried sum rule for electron--nucleon scattering. A comparison with a low--scale parametrization shows that the model reproduces the gross features of the empirical structure functions. We also compute the leading twist contributions of the polarized structure functions $g_{1}(x)$ and $g_{2}(x)$ in this model. We compare the model predictions on these structure functions with data from the E143 experiment by GLAP evolving them appropriately.

Heavy Quark Solitons in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

The Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model (NJL) is extended to incorporate heavy quark spin-symmetry. In this model baryons containing one heavy quark are analyzed as bound-states of light baryons, represented as chiral solitons, and mesons containing one heavy quark. From related studies in Skyrme type models, the ground-state heavy baryon is known to arise for the heavy meson in a P--wave configuration. In the limit of an infinitely large quark mass the heavy meson wave-function is sharply peaked at the center of the chiral soliton. Therefore the bound state equation reduces to an eigenvalue problem for the coefficients of the operators contained in the most general P-wave {\it ansatz} for the heavy meson. Within the NJL model a novel feature arises from the coupling of the heavy meson to the various light quark states. In this respect conceptual differences to Skyrme model calculations are discovered: The strongest bound state is given by a heavy meson configuration which is completely decoupled from the grand spin zero channel of the light quarks.

Strangeness Dependence in Radiative Hyperon Decay Amplitudes

The radiative decays of the $(3/2)^+$ baryons are studied in the three flavor generalization of the Skyrme model. The kaon fields are treated in the slow rotator approach which properly accounts for the observed deviations from the $U$-spin relations for the hyperon magnetic moments. This makes possible a critical discussion of the $U$-spin selection rules for the radiative hyperon decays. The variation of the decay widths with strangeness is studied and a comparison with other treatments of the $SU(3)$ Skyrme model is performed in order to analyze the effects of flavor symmetry breaking.

SU(3) Symmetry Breaking and Octet Baryon Polarizabilities

Static polarizabilities of the low--lying $1/2^+$ baryons are studied within the collective coordinate approach to the three flavor generalization of the Skyrme model; in particular, magnetic polarizabilities are considered. Predicted polarizabilities, which result from different treatments of the strange degrees of freedom in this model, are critically compared. Their deviations from the flavor symmetric formulations are discussed.

Baryons as Chiral Solitons in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio Model

The description of baryons as chiral solitons of the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio (NJL) model is reviewed. A motivation for the soliton description of baryons is provided from large $N_C$ QCD. Rigorous results on the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry in QCD are discussed. It is then argued that the NJL model provides a fair description of low--energy hadron physics. The NJL model is therefore employed to mimic the low--energy chiral flavor dynamics of QCD. The model is bosonized by functional integral techniques and the physical content of the emerging effective meson theory is discussed. In particular, its relation to the Skyrme model is established. The static soliton solutions of the bosonized NJL model are found, their properties discussed, and the influence of various meson fields studied. These considerations provide strong support of Witten's conjecture that baryons can be understood as soliton solutions of effective meson theories. The chiral soliton of the NJL model is then quantized in a semiclassical fashion and various static properties of the nucleon are studied. The dominating $1/N_C$ corrections to the semiclassically quantized soliton are investigated. Time--dependent meson fluctuations off the chiral soliton are explored and employed to estimate the quantum corrections to the soliton mass. Finally, hyperons are described as chiral solitons of the NJL model. This is done in both, the collective rotational approach of Yabu and Ando as well as in the bound state approach of Callan and Klebanov.

Diquarks in a chiral soliton field

In the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model baryons are either considered as quark-diquark-composites or the soliton configurations of the model are interpreted as baryons. As a first step towards constructing a hybrid model, which possesses a dynamical interplay between both pictures, the Bethe-Salpeter equation for diquarks in the background of a soliton configuration is solved. The presence of the soliton causes a significant reduction of the resulting bound state eigenenergy of the diquark. As a consequence a unit baryon number configuration may be constructed with a mass lower than the energy of the soliton. An estimate of the influence of the diquark on the meson fields indicates a small decrease of the extension of the soliton due to diquark correlations.

Heavy Quark Solitons: Towards Realistic Masses

A generalization of the effective meson Lagrangian possessing the heavy quark symmetry to finite meson masses is employed to study the meson mass dependence of the spectrum of S-- and P wave baryons containing one heavy quark or anti-quark. These baryons are described as respectively heavy mesons or anti-mesons bound in the background of a soliton, which is constructed from light mesons. No further approximation is made to solve the bound state equation. For special cases it is shown that the boundary conditions, which have to be satisfied by the bound state wave--functions and stem from the interaction with the light mesons, may impose additional constraints on the existence of bound states when finite masses are assumed. Two types of models supporting soliton solutions for the light mesons are considered: the Skyrme model of pseudoscalars only as well as an extension containing also light vector mesons. It is shown that only the Skyrme model with vector mesons provides a reasonable description of both light and heavy baryons. Kinematical corrections to the bound state equations are included in the discussion.

On the strange vector form factors of the nucleon in the NJL soliton model

Within the Nambu--Jona--Lasinio model strange degrees of freedom are incorporated into the soliton picture using the collective approach of Yabu and Ando. The form factors of the nucleon associated with the nonet vector current are extracted. The numerical results provide limits for the strange magnetic moment: $-0.05\leμ_s\le0.25$. For the strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon the valence quark and vacuum contributions add coherently while there are significant cancellations for the strange electric form factor.

Strange Nucleons and Hyperons as Chiral Solitons in the NJL Model

In the chirally symmetric Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model baryons are described as chiral solitons of mesonic quark--antiquark bound states. Hyperons are investigated in two complementary pictures: the bound state approach of Callan and Klebanov and the collective approach of Yabu and Ando. The latter is used to compute the strange vector form factors of the nucleon providing estimates for the strange electric mean square radius and the strange magnetic moment of the nucleon.
