Quantum Noise of Gravitons and Stochastic Force on Geodesic Separation

In this work we consider the effects of gravitons and their fluctuations on the dynamics of two masses using the Feynman-Vernon influence functional formalism, applied to nonequilibrium quantum field theory and semiclassical stochastic gravity earlier by Calzetta, Hu and Verdaguer [1-3], and most recently, to this problem by Parikh, Wilczek and Zahariade [4-6]. The Hadamard function of the gravitons yields the noise kernel acting as a stochastic tensorial force in a Langevin equation governing the motion of the separation of the two masses. The fluctuations of the separation due to the graviton noise are then solved for various quantum states including the Minkowski vacuum, thermal, coherent and squeezed states. The previous considerations of Parikh et al. are only for some selected modes of the graviton, while in this work we have included all graviton modes and polarizations. We comment on the possibility of detecting these fluctuations in primordial gravitons using interferometors with long baselines in deep space experiments.

Conformally-related Einstein-Langevin equations for metric fluctuations in stochastic gravity

For a conformally-coupled scalar field we obtain the conformally-related Einstein-Langevin equations, using appropriate transformations for all the quantities in the equations between two conformally-related spacetimes. In particular, we analyze the transformations of the influence action, the stress energy tensor, the noise kernel and the dissipation kernel. In due course the fluctuation-dissipation relation is also discussed. The analysis in this paper thereby facilitates a general solution to the Einstein-Langevin equation once the solution of the equation in a simpler, conformally-related spacetime is known. For example, from the Minkowski solution of Martin and Verdaguer, those of the Einstein-Langevin equations in conformally-flat spacetimes, especially for spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models, can be readily obtained.

Spin-3/2 fields in $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole space-times

In previous works we have studied spin-3/2 fields near 4-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The techniques we developed in that case have now been extended here to show that it is possible to determine the potential of spin-3/2 fields near $D$-dimensional black holes by exploiting the radial symmetry of the system. This removes the need to use the Newman-Penrose formalism, which is difficult to extend to $D$-dimensional space-times. In this paper we will derive a general $D$-dimensional gauge invariant effective potential for spin-3/2 fields near black hole systems. We then use this potential to determine the quasi-normal modes and absorption probabilities of spin-3/2 fields near a $D$-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole.

Gravitino fields in Schwarzschild black hole spacetimes

The analysis of gravitino fields in curved spacetimes is usually carried out using the Newman-Penrose formalism. In this paper we consider a more direct approach with eigenspinor-vectors on spheres, to separate out the angular parts of the fields in a Schwarzschild background. The radial equations of the corresponding gauge invariant variable obtained are shown to be the same as in the Newman-Penrose formalism. These equations are then applied to the evaluation of the quasinormal mode frequencies, as well as the absorption probabilities of the gravitino field scattering in this background.

Noise kernels of stochastic gravity in conformally-flat spacetimes

The central object in the theory of semiclassical stochastic gravity is the noise kernel which is the symmetric two point correlation function of the stress-energy tensor. Using the corresponding Wightman functions in Minkowski, Einstein and open Einstein spaces, we construct the noise kernels of a conformally coupled scalar field in these spacetimes. From them we show that the noise kernels in conformally-flat spacetimes, including the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universes, can be obtained in closed analytic forms by using a combination of conformal and coordindate transformations.

A New Approach to Black Hole Quasinormal Modes: A Review of the Asymptotic Iteration Method

We discuss an approach to obtaining black hole quasinormal modes (QNMs) using the asymptotic iteration method (AIM), initially developed to solve second order ordinary differential equations. We introduce the standard version of this method and present an improvement more suitable for numerical implementation. We demonstrate that the AIM can be used to find radial QNMs for Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) and Kerr black holes in a unified way. An advantage of the AIM over the standard continued fraction method (CFM) is that for differential equations with more than three regular singular points Gaussian eliminations are not required. However, the convergence of the AIM depends on the location of the radial or angular position, choosing the best such position in general remains an open problem. This review presents for the first time the spin 0, 1/2 & 2 QNMs of a Kerr black hole and the gravitational and electromagnetic QNMs of the RN black hole calculated via the AIM, and confirms results previously obtained using the CFM. We also presents some new results comparing the AIM to the WKB method. Finally we emphasize that the AIM is well suited to higher dimensional generalizations and we give an example of doubly rotating black holes.

Stress-energy Tensor Correlators in N-dim Hot Flat Spaces via the Generalized Zeta-Function Method

We calculate the expectation values of the stress-energy bitensor defined at two different spacetime points $x, x'$ of a massless, minimally coupled scalar field with respect to a quantum state at finite temperature $T$ in a flat $N$-dimensional spacetime by means of the generalized zeta-function method. These correlators, also known as the noise kernels, give the fluctuations of energy and momentum density of a quantum field which are essential for the investigation of the physical effects of negative energy density in certain spacetimes or quantum states. They also act as the sources of the Einstein-Langevin equations in stochastic gravity which one can solve for the dynamics of metric fluctuations as in spacetime foams. In terms of constitutions these correlators are one rung above (in the sense of the correlation -- BBGKY or Schwinger-Dyson -- hierarchies) the mean (vacuum and thermal expectation) values of the stress-energy tensor which drive the semiclassical Einstein equation in semiclassical gravity. The low and the high temperature expansions of these correlators are also given here: At low temperatures, the leading order temperature dependence goes like $T^{N}$ while at high temperatures they have a $T^{2}$ dependence with the subleading terms exponentially suppressed by $e^{-T}$. We also discuss the singular behaviors of the correlators in the $x'\rightarrow x$ coincident limit as was done before for massless conformal quantum fields.

Correlations of the stress-energy tensor in AdS spaces via the generalized zeta-function method

We calculate the vacuum expectation values of the stress-energy bitensor of a minimally coupled massless scalar field in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. These correlators, also known as the noise kernel, act as sources in the Einstein-Langevin equations of stochastic gravity [1,2] which govern the induced metric fluctuations beyond the mean-field dynamics described by the semiclassical Einstein equations of semiclassical gravity. Because the AdS spaces are maximally symmetric the eigenmodes have analytic expressions which facilitate the computation of the zeta-function [3,4]. Upon taking the second functional variation of the generalized zeta function introduced in [5] we obtain the correlators of the stress tensor. Both the short and the long geodesic distance limits of the correlators are presented.

Quasi-normal modes for doubly rotating black holes

Based on the work of Chen, Lü and Pope, we derive expressions for the $D\geq 6$ dimensional metric for Kerr-(A)dS black holes with two independent rotation parameters and all others set equal to zero: $a_1\neq 0, a_2\neq0, a_3=a_4=...=0$. The Klein-Gordon equation is then explicitly separated on this background. For $D\geq 6$ this separation results in a radial equation coupled to two generalized spheroidal angular equations. We then develop a full numerical approach that utilizes the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM) to find radial Quasi-Normal Modes (QNMs) of doubly rotating flat Myers-Perry black holes for slow rotations. We also develop perturbative expansions for the angular quantum numbers in powers of the rotation parameters up to second order.

Scalar spheroidal harmonics in five dimensional Kerr-(A)dS

We derive expressions for the general five-dimensional metric for Kerr-(A)dS black holes. The Klein-Gordon equation is explicitly separated and we show that the angular part of the wave equation leads to just one spheroidal wave equation, which is also that for charged five-dimensional Kerr-(A)dS black holes. We present results for the perturbative expansion of the angular eigenvalue in powers of the rotation parameters up to 6th order and compare numerically with the continued fraction method.

Stress-energy Tensor Correlators of a Quantum Field in Euclidean $R^N$ and $AdS^N$ spaces via the generalized zeta-function method

In this paper we calculate the vacuum expectation values of the stress-energy bitensor of a massive quantum scalar field with general coupling to N-dimensional Euclidean spaces and hyperbolic spaces which are Euclidean sections of the anti-de Sitter (AdS) spaces. These correlators, also known as the noise kernel, act as sources in the Einstein-Langevin equations of stochastic gravity [1,2] which govern the induced metric fluctuations beyond the mean-field dynamics described by the semiclassical Einstein equations of semiclassical gravity. Because these spaces are maximally symmetric the eigenmodes have analytic expressions which facilitate the computation of the zeta-function [3,4]. Upon taking the second functional variation of the generalized zeta function introduced in [5] we obtain the correlators of the stress tensor for these two classes of spacetimes. Both the short and the large geodesic distance limits of the correlators are presented for dimensions up to 11. We mention current research problems in early universe cosmology, black hole physics and gravity-fluid duality where these results can be usefully applied to.

Black hole quasinormal modes using the asymptotic iteration method

In this article we show that the asymptotic iteration method (AIM) allows one to numerically find the quasinormal modes of Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild de Sitter (SdS) black holes. An added benefit of the method is that it can also be used to calculate the Schwarzschild anti-de Sitter (SAdS) quasinormal modes for the case of spin zero perturbations. We also discuss an improved version of the AIM, more suitable for numerical implementation.

Asymptotic iteration method for spheroidal harmonics of higher-dimensional Kerr-(A)dS black holes

In this work we calculate the angular eigenvalues of the $(n+4)$-dimensional {\it simply} rotating Kerr-(A)dS spheroidal harmonics using the Asymptotic Iteration Method (AIM). We make some comparisons between this method and that of the Continued Fraction Method (CFM) and use the latter to check our results. We also present analytic expressions for the small rotation limit up to $O(c^3)$ with the coefficient of each power up to $O(α^2)$, where $c=aω$ and $α=a^2 Λ$ ($a$ is the angular velocity, $ω$ the frequency and $Λ$ the cosmological constant).

Graviton emission from simply rotating Kerr-de Sitter black holes: Transverse traceless tensor graviton modes

In this article we present results for tensor graviton modes (in seven dimensions and greater, $n\geq 3$) for greybody factors of Kerr-dS black holes and for Hawking radiation from simply rotating (n+4)-dimensional Kerr black holes. Although there is some subtlety with defining the Hawking temperature of a Kerr-dS black hole, we present some preliminary results for emissions assuming the standard Hawking normalization and a Bousso-Hawking-like normalization.

Gauge Independent Trace Anomaly for Gravitons

We show that the trace anomaly for gravitons calculated using the usual effective action formalism depends on the choice of gauge when the background spacetime is not a solution of the classical equation of motion, that is, when off-shell. We then use the gauge independent Vilkovisky-DeWitt effective action to restore gauge independence to the off-shell case. Additionally we explicitly evaluate trace anomalies for some N-sphere background spacetimes.
