KiDS & Euclid: Cosmological implications of a pseudo angular power spectrum analysis of KiDS-1000 cosmic shear tomography

We present a tomographic weak lensing analysis of the Kilo Degree Survey Data Release 4 (KiDS-1000), using a new pseudo angular power spectrum estimator (pseudo-$C_{\ell}$) under development for the ESA Euclid mission. Over 21 million galaxies with shape information are divided into five tomographic redshift bins, ranging from 0.1 to 1.2 in photometric redshift. We measured pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ using eight bands in the multipole range $76<\ell<1500$ for auto- and cross-power spectra between the tomographic bins. A series of tests were carried out to check for systematic contamination from a variety of observational sources including stellar number density, variations in survey depth, and point spread function properties. While some marginal correlations with these systematic tracers were observed, there is no evidence of bias in the cosmological inference. B-mode power spectra are consistent with zero signal, with no significant residual contamination from E/B-mode leakage. We performed a Bayesian analysis of the pseudo-$C_{\ell}$ estimates by forward modelling the effects of the mask. Assuming a spatially flat $Λ$CDM cosmology, we constrained the structure growth parameter $S_8 = σ_8(Ω_{\rm m}/0.3)^{1/2} = 0.754_{-0.029}^{+0.027}$. When combining cosmic shear from KiDS-1000 with baryon acoustic oscillation and redshift space distortion data from recent Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) measurements of luminous red galaxies, as well as the Lyman-$α$ forest and its cross-correlation with quasars, we tightened these constraints to $S_8 = 0.771^{+0.006}_{-0.032}$. These results are in very good agreement with previous KiDS-1000 and SDSS analyses and confirm a $\sim 3σ$ tension with early-Universe constraints from cosmic microwave background experiments.

CODEX Weak Lensing Mass Catalogue and implications on the mass-richness relation

The COnstrain Dark Energy with X-ray clusters (CODEX) sample contains the largest flux limited sample of X-ray clusters at $0.35 < z < 0.65$. It was selected from ROSAT data in the 10,000 square degrees of overlap with BOSS, mapping a total number of 2770 high-z galaxy clusters. We present here the full results of the CFHT CODEX program on cluster mass measurement, including a reanalysis of CFHTLS Wide data, with 25 individual lensing-constrained cluster masses. We employ $lensfit$ shape measurement and perform a conservative colour-space selection and weighting of background galaxies. Using the combination of shape noise and an analytic covariance for intrinsic variations of cluster profiles at fixed mass due to large scale structure, miscentring, and variations in concentration and ellipticity, we determine the likelihood of the observed shear signal as a function of true mass for each cluster. We combine 25 individual cluster mass likelihoods in a Bayesian hierarchical scheme with the inclusion of optical and X-ray selection functions to derive constraints on the slope $α$, normalization $β$, and scatter $σ_{\ln λ| μ}$ of our richness-mass scaling relation model in log-space: $\left<\ln λ| μ\right> = αμ+ β$, with $μ= \ln (M_{200c}/M_{\mathrm{piv}})$, and $M_{\mathrm{piv}} = 10^{14.81} M_{\odot}$. We find a slope $α= 0.49^{+0.20}_{-0.15}$, normalization $ \exp(β) = 84.0^{+9.2}_{-14.8}$ and $σ_{\ln λ| μ} = 0.17^{+0.13}_{-0.09}$ using CFHT richness estimates. In comparison to other weak lensing richness-mass relations, we find the normalization of the richness statistically agreeing with the normalization of other scaling relations from a broad redshift range ($0.0<z<0.65$) and with different cluster selection (X-ray, Sunyaev-Zeldovich, and optical).

Weak-Lensing Mass Calibration of the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Equatorial Sunyaev-Zeldovich Cluster Sample with the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey

Mass calibration uncertainty is the largest systematic effect for using clusters of galaxies to constrain cosmological parameters. We present weak lensing mass measurements from the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Stripe 82 Survey for galaxy clusters selected through their high signal-to-noise thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signal measured with the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). For a sample of 9 ACT clusters with a tSZ signal-to-noise greater than five the average weak lensing mass is $\left(4.8\pm0.8\right)\,\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$, consistent with the tSZ mass estimate of $\left(4.70\pm1.0\right)\,\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$ which assumes a universal pressure profile for the cluster gas. Our results are consistent with previous weak-lensing measurements of tSZ-detected clusters from the Planck satellite. When comparing our results, we estimate the Eddington bias correction for the sample intersection of Planck and weak-lensing clusters which was previously excluded.

The Effects of Superhigh Magnetic Fields on Equations of States of Neutron Stars

By introducing Dirac ?-function in superhigh magnetic field, we deduce a general formula for pressure of degenerate and relativistic electrons, Pe, which is suitable for superhigh magnetic fields, discuss the quantization of Landau levels of electrons, and consider the quantum electrodynamic(QED) effects on the equations of states (EOSs) for different matter systems. The main conclusions are as follows: the stronger the magnetic field strength, the higher the electron pressure becomes; compared with a common radio pulsar, a magnetar could be a more compact oblate spheroid-like deformed neutron star due to the anisotropic total pressure; and an increase in the maximum mass of a magnetar is expected because of the positive contribution of the magnetic field energy to the EOS of the star. Since this is an original work in which some uncertainties could exist, to further modify and perfect our theory model should be considered in our future studies.

The effects of UV photometry and binary interactions on photometric redshift and galaxy morphology

Using the Hyperz code and a template spectral library which consists of 4 observed galaxy spectra from Coleman, Wu & Weedman (CWW, 1980) and 8 spectral families built with evolutionary population synthesis models, we present photometric redshift estimates (photo-z) for a spectroscopic sample of 6,531 galaxies, and morphologies for a morphological sample of 1,502 bright galaxies. All galaxies are matched with the SDSS DR7 and GALEX DR4. The inclusion of Fuv or Nuv or both photometry decreases the number of catastrophic identifications (CIs, |z_phot -z_spec| > 1.0). If CIs are removed, the inclusion of both Fuv and Nuv photometry mainly increases the number of non-CIs in the low redshift, g-r < 0.8 and fainter r-magnitude regions. The inclusion of binary interactions (BIs) mainly increases the number of non-CIs and decreases the deviations in the 0.3 < g-r < 0.8 region in the case of only using optical photometry. The inclusion of UV photometry would decrease and increase the probability that early types are classified as Burst and E types, respectively, and increase that late types are classified as CWW-Sbc and CWW-Scd types. If CIs are excluded, the inclusion of UV data mainly raises the identifications of late types in all redshift, bluer g-r and r > 14 regions. Moreover, BIs mainly affect the determinations of E and S0 types. Nuv -u = 1.94 and 5.77-1.47(u-r) = Fuv discriminators can be used as morphology selection indicators. These two criteria have comparable reliability and completeness for selecting early- and late-type galaxies to C=2.6 criterion and higher completeness for early-type selection than u-r=2.22 criterion.

Discovery of superstrong, fading, iron line emission and double-peaked Balmer lines of the galaxy SDSSJ0952+2143 - the light echo of a huge flare

We report the discovery of superstrong, fading, high-ionization iron line emission in the galaxy SDSSJ095209.56+214313.3 (SDSSJ0952+2143 hereafter), which must have been caused by an X-ray outburst of large amplitude. SDSSJ0952+2143 is unique in its strong multiwavelength variability; such a broadband emission-line and continuum response has not been observed before. The strong iron line emission is accompanied by unusual Balmer line emission with a broad base, narrow core and double-peaked narrow horns, and strong HeII emission. These lines, while strong in the SDSS spectrum taken in 2005, have faded away significantly in new spectra taken in December 2007. Comparison of SDSS, 2MASS, GALEX and follow-up GROND photometry reveals variability in the NUV, optical and NIR band. Taken together, these unusual observations can be explained by a giant outburst in the EUV--X-ray band, detected even in the optical and NIR. The intense and variable iron, Helium and Balmer lines represent the ``light echo'' of the flare, as it traveled through circumnuclear material. The outburst may have been caused by the tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole. Spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS are well suited to detect emission-line light echoes of such rare flare events. Reverberation-mapping of these light echoes can then be used as a new and efficient probe of the physical conditions in the circumnuclear material in non-active or active galaxies.
