ββ-Decay Half-Lives of 55 Neutron-Rich Isotopes beyond the N=82 Shell Gap

The ββ-decay half-lives of 55 neutron-rich nuclei 134−139^{134-139}Sn, 134−142^{134-142}Sb, 137−144^{137-144}Te, 140−146^{140-146}I, 142−148^{142-148}Xe, 145−151^{145-151}Cs, 148−153^{148-153}Ba, 151−155^{151-155}La were measured at the Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory (RIBF) employing the projectile fission fragments of 238^{238}U. The nuclear level structure, which relates to deformation, has a large effect on the half-lives. The impact of newly-measured half-lives on modeling the astrophysical origin of the heavy elements is studied in the context of rr process nucleosynthesis. For a wide variety of astrophysical conditions, including those in which fission recycling occurs, the half-lives have an important local impact on the second (AA ≈\approx 130) peak.

Experimental investigation of a linear-chain structure in the nucleus 14C

It is a well-known fact that a cluster of nucleons can be formed in the interior of an atomic nucleus, and such clusters may occupy molecular-like orbitals, showing characteristics similar to normal molecules consisting of atoms. Chemical molecules having a linear alignment are commonly seen in nature, such as carbon dioxide. A similar linear alignment of the nuclear clusters, referred to as linear-chain cluster state (LCCS), has been studied since the 1950s, however, up to now there is no clear experimental evidence demonstrating the existence of such a state. Recently, it was proposed that an excess of neutrons may offer just such a stabilizing mechanism, revitalizing interest in the nuclear LCCS, specifically with predictions for their emergence in neutron-rich carbon isotopes. Here we present the experimental observation of α-cluster states in the radioactive 14C nucleus. Using the 10Be+α resonant scattering method with a radioactive beam, we observed a series of levels which completely agree with theoretically predicted levels having an explicit linear-chain cluster configuration. We regard this as the first strong indication of the linear-chain clustered nucleus.

Examination of the role of the 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F reaction rate in type I x-ray bursts

The 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F reaction is one of the key reactions involved in the breakout from the hot-CNO cycle to the rp-process in type I x-ray bursts (XRBs). The resonant properties in the compound nucleus 18^{18}Ne have been investigated through resonant elastic scattering of 17^{17}F+pp. The radioactive 17^{17}F beam was separated by the CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator (CRIB) and bombarded a thick H2_2 gas target at 3.6 MeV/nucleon. The recoiling light particles were measured by three ΔΔE-E silicon telescopes at laboratory angles of θθlab_{lab}≈\approx3∘^\circ, 10∘^\circ and 18∘^\circ, respectively. Five resonances at ExE_{x}=6.15, 6.28, 6.35, 6.85, and 7.05 MeV were observed in the excitation functions, and their spin-parities have been determined based on an RR-matrix analysis. In particular, JπJ^π=1−^- was firmly assigned to the 6.15-MeV state which dominates the thermonuclear 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F rate below 2 GK. As well, a possible new excited state in 18^{18}Ne was observed at ExE_{x}=6.85±\pm0.11 MeV with tentative JJ=0 assignment. This state could be the analog state of the 6.880 MeV (0−^{-}) level in the mirror nucleus 18^{18}O, or a bandhead state (0+^+) of the six-particle four-hole (6pp-4hh) band. A new thermonuclear 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F rate has been determined, and the astrophysical impact of multiple recent rates has been examined using an XRB model. Contrary to previous expectations, we find only modest impact on predicted nuclear energy generation rates from using reaction rates differing by up to several orders of magnitude.

Optimizing Broadband Terahertz Modulation with Hybrid Graphene/Metasurface Structures

We demonstrate efficient terahertz (THz) modulation by coupling graphene strongly with a broadband THz metasurface device. This THz metasurface, made of periodic gold slit arrays, shows near unity broadband transmission, which arises from coherent radiation of the enhanced local-field in the slits. Utilizing graphene as an active load with tunable conductivity, we can significantly modify the local-field enhancement and strongly modulate the THz wave transmission. This hybrid device also provides a new platform for future nonlinear THz spectroscopy study of graphene.

A confirmative spin-parity assignment for the key 6.15 MeV state in 18^{18}Ne of astrophysical importance

Proton resonant states in 18^{18}Ne have been investigated by the resonant elastic scattering of 17^{17}F+pp. The 17^{17}F beam was separated by the CNS radioactive ion beam separator (CRIB), and bombarded a thick H2_2 gas target at 3.6 MeV/nucleon. The recoiled light particles were measured by using three sets of ΔΔE-E Si telescope at scattering angles of θθlab_{lab}≈3∘\approx 3^\circ, 10∘^\circ and 18∘^\circ, respectively. Four resonances, {\it i.e.}, at ExE_{x}=6.15, 6.30, 6.85, and 7.05 MeV, were observed clearly. By RR-matrix analysis of the excitation functions, JπJ^π=1−^- was firmly assigned to the 6.15 MeV state which is a key state in calculating the reaction rate of 14^{14}O(αα,pp)17^{17}F reaction. This reaction was thought to be one of the most probable key reactions for the breakout from the hot-CNO cycle to the rprp-process in type I x-ray bursts In addition, a new excited state observed at ExE_{x}=6.85 MeV was tentatively assigned as 0−^{-}, which could be the analog state of 6.880 MeV, 0−^{-} in mirror 18^{18}O.
