Study of the pd(dp) -> 3He pi pi reactions close to threshold

New experimental data on the pd -> 3He pi+ pi- reaction obtained with the COSY-MOMO detector below the three-pion threshold are presented. The reaction was also studied in inverse kinematics with a deuteron beam and the higher counting rates achieved were especially important at low excess energies. The comparison of these data with inclusive pd -> 3He+X rates allowed estimates also to be made of pi0 pi0 production. The results confirm our earlier findings that close to threshold there is no enhancement at low excitation energies in the pi+ pi- system, where the data seem largely suppressed compared to phase space. Possible explanations for this behavior, such as strong p- waves in the pi+pi- -system or the influence of two-step processes, are explored.

Intermediate Mass Fragment Emission in ${^{32}}$S +${^{51}}$V, ${^{109}}$Ag, and ${^{238}}$U Collisions at E~=~31.6~MeV~A

Intermediate mass fragment emission for reactions of $^{32}\text{S} +\,^{51}\text{V},\,^{109}$Ag, and $^{238}\text{U}$ has been studied. Double differential cross sections were analysed in terms of the generalised moving source model yielding charge distributions. Isotope ratios show strong fragment mass dependencies. The data were successfully reproduced by the coalescence model as well as by statistical multifragmentation model calculations. Quantum molecular dynamics model calculations were not so successful.

Search for Quasi Bound $η$ Mesons

The search for a quasi bound $η$ meson in atomic nuclei is reviewed. This tentative state is studied theoretically as well as experimentally. The theory starts from elastic $η$ nucleon scattering which is derived from production data within some models. From this interaction the $η$ nucleus interaction is derived. Model calculations predict binding energies and widths of the quasi bound state. Another method is to derive the $η$ nucleus interaction from excitation functions of $η$ production experiments. The $s$ wave interaction is extracted from such data via final state interaction theorem. We give the derivation of $s$ wave amplitudes in partial wave expansion and in helicity amplitudes and their relation to observables. Different experiments extracting the final state interaction are discussed as are production experiments. So far only three experiments give evidence for the existence of the quasi bound state: a pion double charge exchange experiment, an effective mass measurement, and a transfer reaction at recoil free kinematics with observation of the decay of the state.

π^0 π^0 Production in Proton-Proton Collisions at Tp=1.4 GeV

The reaction pp->pppi0pi0 has been investigated at a beam energy of 1.4 GeV using the WASA-at-COSY facility. The total cross section is found to be (324 +- 21_systematic +- 58_normalization) mub. In order to to study the production mechanism, differential kinematical distributions have been evaluated. The differential distributions indicate that both initial state protons are excited into intermediate Delta(1232) resonances, each decaying into a proton and a single pion, thereby producing the pion pair in the final state. No significant contribution of the Roper resonance N*(1440) via its decay into a proton and two pions is found

Study of the $Λp$ Interaction Close to the $Σ^+n$ and $Σ^0p$ Thresholds

The $Λp$ interaction close to the $ΣN$ threshold is considered. Specifically, the pronounced structure seen in production reactions like $K^-d \to π^- Λp$ and $pp\to K^+ Λp$ around the $ΣN$ threshold is analyzed. Modern interaction models of the coupled $ΛN - ΣN$ systems generate such a structure either due to the presence of a (deuteron-like) unstable bound state or of an inelastic virtual state. % A determination of the position of the prominent peak as observed in various experiments for the two aforementioned reactions leads to values that agree quite well with each other. Furthermore, the deduced mean value of $2128.7\pm 0.3$ MeV for the peak position coincides practically with the threshold energy of the $Σ^+ n$ channel. This supports the interpretation of the structure as a genuine cusp, signaling an inelastic virtual state in the $^3S_1-^3D_1$ partial wave of the $ΣN$ isospin 1/2 channel. % There is also evidence for a second peak (or shoulder) in the data sets considered which appears at roughly 10-15 MeV above the $ΣN$ threshold. However, its concrete position varies significantly from data set to data set and, thus, a theoretical interpretation is difficult.

Sequential and simultaneous emission of fragments from p+Al collisions

The energy and angular dependencies of double differential cross sections d^2sigma/dOmegadE were measured for p,d,t,^{3,4,6}He,^{6,7,8}Li,{7,9,10}Be, and ^{10,11,12}B produced in collisions of 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV protons with an Al target. The spectra and angular distributions of Li, Be, and B isotopes indicate a presence of two contributions: an isotropic, low energy one which is attributed to the evaporation of particles from excited remnants of the intranuclear cascade, and an anisotropic part which is interpreted to be due to multifragmentation of the remnants. It was found that such a hypothesis leads to very good description of spectra and angular distributions of all intermediate mass fragments (^6He-^{12}B) using the critical value of the excitation energy per nucleon as a single parameter, varying slowly with the beam energy.

Upper limits for a narrow resonance in the reaction p + p -> K^+ + (Lambda p)

The reaction pp -> K^+ + (Lambda p) has been measured at T_p = 1.953 GeV and Θ= 0 deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda p final state interaction. Narrow S = -1 resonances predicted by bag model calculations are not visible in the missing mass spectrum. Small structures observed in a previous experiment are not confirmed. Upper limits for the production cross section of a narrow resonance are deduced for missing masses between 2058 and 2105 MeV/c^2.

Cross section of the $pp\to K^+Σ^+n$ reaction close to threshold

We have measured inclusive data on $K^+$-meson production in $pp$ collisions at COSY Jülich close to the hyperon production threshold and determined the hyperon-nucleon invariant mass spectra. The spectra were decomposed into three parts: $Λp$, $Σ^0p$ and $Σ^+n$. The cross section for the $Σ^+n$ channel was found to be much smaller than a previous measurement in that excess energy region. The data together with previous results at higher energies are compatible with a phase space dependence.

High resolution study of the Lambda p final state interaction in the reaction p + p -> K+ + (Lambda p)

The reaction pp -> K+ + (Lambda p) was measured at Tp=1.953 GeV and Theta = 0 deg with a high missing mass resolution in order to study the Lambda p final state interaction. The large final state enhancement near the Lambda p threshold can be described using the standard Jost-function approach. The singlet and triplet scattering lengths and effective ranges are deduced by fitting simultaneously the Lambda p invariant mass spectrum and the total cross section data of the free Lambda p scattering.

Search for $η$-bound Nuclei

The $η$ meson can be bound to atomic nuclei. Experimental search is discussed in the form of final state interaction for the reactions $dp\to{^3\text{He}}η$ and $dd\to{^4\text{He}}η$. For the latter case tensor polarized deuterons were used in order to extract the s-wave strength. For both reactions complex scattering lengths are deduced: $a_{{}\rm{^3He}η} = \left[ { \pm \left( {10.7 \pm 0.8_{ - 0.5}^{ + 0.1} } \right) + i \cdot \left( {1.5 \pm 2.6_{ - 0.9}^{ + 1.0} } \right)} \right]$ fm and $a_{^4\text{He}η} = \left[ { \pm \left( {3.1 \pm 0.5} \right) + i \cdot \left( {0 \pm 0.5} \right)} \right]$ fm. In a two-nucleon transfer reaction under quasi-free conditions, $p^{27}\text{Al}\to {^3\text{He}}X$, was investigated. The system $X$ can be the bound $^{25}\text{Mg}\otimesη$ at rest. When a possible decay of an intermediate $N^*/1535)$ is required, a highly significant bump shows up in the missing mass spectrum. The data give for a bound state a binding energy of 13.3$\pm$1.6 MeV and a width of $σ$=4.4$\pm$1.3 MeV.

Study of the $\bm{p+^6}$Li$\bm{\toη+^7}$Be reaction 11.3 MeV above threshold

The cross section for the reaction $p+^6\text{Li}\toη+^7\text{Be}$ was measured at an excess energy of 11.28 MeV above threshold by detecting the recoiling $^7$Be nuclei. A dedicated set of focal plane detectors was built for the magnetic spectrograph Big Karl and was used for identification and four momentum measurement of the $^7$Be. A differential cross section of $\frac{dσ}{dΩ}=(0.69\pm{0.20}\text{(stat.)}\pm 0.20\text{(syst.)})\text{nb/sr}$ for the ground state plus the 1/2$^-$ was measured. The result is compared to model calculations.

Comparison of nonequilibrium processes in p+Ni and p+Au collisions at GeV energies

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections d2sigma/dOmega dE were measured for p, d, t, 3,4,6He, 6,7,8Li, 7,9,10Be, 10,11B, and C produced in collisions of 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV protons with a Ni target. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions does almost not change whereas the absolute value of the cross sections increases by a factor about 1.7 for all ejectiles in this beam energy range. It was found that energy and angular dependencies of the cross sections cannot be reproduced by the microscopic model of intranuclear cascade with coalescence of nucleons and the statistical model for evaporation of particles from excited, equilibrated residual nuclei. The inclusion of nonequilibrium processes, described by a phenomenological model of the emission from fast and hot moving sources, resulting from break-up of the target nucleus by impinging proton, leads to very good reproduction of data. Cross sections of these processes are quite large, exhausting approximately half of the total production cross sections. Due to good reproduction of energy and angular dependencies of d2sigma/dOmega dE by model calculation it was possible to determine total production cross sections for all studied ejectiles. Results obtained in this work point to the analogous reaction mechanism for proton induced reactions on Ni target as that observed previously for Au target in the same beam energy range.

Variation of nonequilibrium processes in p+Ni system with beam energy

The energy and angular dependence of double differential cross sections dsigma/dOmega dE were measured for p, d, t, 3,4He, 6,7Li, 7,9Be, and 10,11B produced in collisions of 0.175 GeV protons with Ni target. The analysis of measured dfferential cross sections allowed to extract total production cross sections for ejectiles listed above. The shape of the spectra and angular distributions indicate the presence of other nonequilibrium processes besides the emission of nucleons from the intranuclear cascade, and besides the evaporation of various particles from remnants of intranuclear cascade. These nonequilibrium processes consist of coalescence of nucleons into light charged particles during the intranuclear cascade, of the fireball emission which contributes to the cross sections of protons and deuterons, and of the break-up of the target nucleus which leads to the emission of intermediate mass fragments. All such processes were found earlier at beam energies 1.2, 1.9, and 2.5 GeV for Ni as well as for Au targets, however, significant differences in properties of these processes at high and low beam energy are observed in the present study.
