Determining the temperature in heavy-ion collisions with multiplicity distribution

By relating the charge multiplicity distribution and the temperature of a de-exciting nucleus through a deep neural network, we propose that the charge multiplicity distribution can be used as a thermometer of heavy-ion collisions. Based on an isospin-dependent quantum molecular dynamics model, we study the caloric curve of reaction $^{103}$Pd + $^9$Be with the apparent temperature determined through the charge multiplicity distribution. The caloric curve shows a characteristic signature of nuclear liquid-gas phase transition around the apparent temperature $T_{\rm ap}$ $=$ $6.4~\rm MeV$, which is consistent with that through a traditional heavy-ion collision thermometer, and indicates the viability of determining the temperature in heavy-ion collisions with multiplicity distribution.

Evidence for $Z_{c}^{\pm}$ decays into the $ρ^{\pm} η_{c}$ final state

We study $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions with a $π^{+}π^{-}π^{0}η_{c}$ final state using data samples collected with the BESIII detector at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}=4.226$, $4.258$, $4.358$, $4.416$, and $4.600$ GeV. Evidence for the decay $\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac$ is reported with a statistical significance of $3.9σ$ with various systematic uncertainties taken into account at $\sqrt{s} = 4.226$ GeV, and the Born cross section times branching fraction $σ^{B}(\EE\to \pimp\zcpm)\times \BR(\zcpm\to\rhopm\etac)$ is measured to be $(48 \pm 11 \pm 11)\,\rm{pb}$. The $\zcpm\to \rhopm\etac$ signal is not significant at the other center-of-mass energies and the corresponding upper limits are determined. In addition, no significant signal is observed in a search for $\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm}\etac$ with the same data samples. The ratios $R_{\zc}=\BR(\zcpm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcpm\to π^{\pm} \jpsi)$ and $R_{\zcp}=\BR(\zcppm\to ρ^{\pm} \etac)/\BR(\zcppm\to π^{\pm} \hc)$ are obtained and used to discriminate between different theoretical interpretations of the $\zcpm$ and $\zcppm$.

Network structure of thermonuclear reactions in nuclear landscape

Nucleosynthesis is a complex process in astro-nuclear evolution. In this work, we construct a directed multi-layer nuclear reaction network using the substrate-product method from a thermonuclear reaction database, JINA REACLIB. The network contains four layers, namely $n$-, $p$-, $h$- and $r$, corresponding to the reaction types involved in neutrons, protons, $^4$He and the remainder, respectively. The degree values (i.e. numbers of reactions) for three layers of n-, p- and h- have a significant correlation with one another, and their topological structures exhibit a similar regularity. However, the $r$-layer has a more complex topological structure than others and has less correlation with the other three layers. A software package named `mfinder' is employed to analyze the motif structure of the nuclear reaction network. We thus identify the most frequent reaction patterns of interconnections occurring among different nuclides. This work provides a novel approach to study the nuclear reaction network prevailing in the astrophysical context.

Identification of new transitions and mass assignments of levels in $^{143-153}$Pr

The previously reported levels assigned to 151,152,153Pr have recently been called into question regarding their mass assignment. The above questioned level assignments are clarified by measuring g-transitions tagged with A and Z in an in-beam experiment in addition to the measurements from 252Cf spontaneous fission (SF) and establish new spectroscopic information from $N=84$ to $N=94$ in the Pr isotopic chain. The isotopic chain 143-153Pr has been studied from the spontaneous fission of 252Cf by using Gammasphere and also from the measurement of the prompt g-rays in coincidence with isotopically-identified fission fragments using VAMOS++ and EXOGAM at GANIL. The latter were produced using 238U beams on a 9Be target at energies around the Coulomb barrier. The g-g-g-g data from 252Cf (SF) and those from the GANIL in-beam A- and Z-gated spectra were combined to unambiguously assign the various transitions and levels in 151,152,153Pr and other isotopes. New transitions and bands in 145,147,148,149,150Pr were identified by using g-g-g and g-g-g-g coincidences and A and Z gated g-g spectra. The transitions and levels previously assigned to 151,153Pr have been confirmed by the (A,Z) gated spectra. The transitions previously assigned to 152Pr are now assigned to 151Pr on the basis of the (A,Z) gated spectra. Two new bands with 20 new transitions in 152Pr and one new band with 7 new transitions in 153Pr are identified from the g-g-g-g coincidence spectra and the (A,Z) gated spectrum. In addition, new g-rays are also reported in 143-146Pr. New levels of 145,147-153Pr have been established, reliable mass assignments of the levels in 151,152,153Pr have been reported and new transitions have been identified in 143-146Pr showing the new avenues that are opened by combining the two experimental approaches.

Shape coexistence and triaxiality in nuclei near 80Zr

Total-Routhian-Surface calculations have been performed to investigate the shape evolutions of $A\sim80$ nuclei, $^{80-84}$Zr, $^{76-80}$Sr and $^{84,86}$Mo. Shape coexistences of spherical, prolate and oblate deformations have been found in these nuclei. Particularly for the nuclei, $^{80}$Sr and $^{82}$Zr, the energy differences between two shape-coexisting states are less than 220 keV. At high spins, the $g_{9/2}$ shell plays an important role for shape evolutions. It has been found that the alignment of the $g_{9/2}$ quasi-particles drives nuclei to be triaxial.

Electronic phase diagram of LixCoO2 revisited with potentiostatically de-intercalated single crystals

Electronic phase diagram of LixCoO2 has been re-examined using potentiostatically de-intercalated single crystal samples. Stable phases of x ~ 0.87, 0.72, 0.53, 0.50, 0.43, and 0.33 were found and isolated for physical property studies. A-type and chain-type antiferromagnetic orderings have been suggested from magnetic susceptibility measurement results in x ~ 0.87 and 0.50 below ~ 10 K and 200 K, respectively, similar to those found in NaxCoO2 system. There is no Li vacancy superlattice ordering observed at room temperature for the electronically stable phase Li0.72CoO2 as revealed by synchrotron X-ray Laue diffraction. The peculiar magnetic anomaly near ~ 175 K as often found in powder samples of x ~ 0.46-0.78 cannot be isolated through this single crystal potentiostatic method, which supports the previously proposed explanation to be surface stabilized phase of significant thermal hysteresis and aging character.

Observation of Positive-Parity Bands in $^{109}$Pd and $^{111}$Pd: Enhanced $γ$-Softness

The neutron-rich nuclei $^{109}$Pd and $^{111}$Pd were produced as fission fragments following the $^{30}$Si + $^{168}$Er reaction at 142 MeV. Using the identification based on the coincidences with the complementary fission fragments, the only positive-parity bands observed so far in $^{109}$Pd and $^{111}$Pd emerged from this work. A band, built on top of the 5/2$^+$ ground state exhibiting $ΔI$ = 1 energy-level staggering, was observed in each of these nuclei. Both nuclei of interest, $^{109}$Pd and $^{111}$Pd, are suggested to lie in the transitional region of Pd isotopes of maximum $γ$-softness. The ground states of both nuclei are predicted by TRS calculations to be extremely $γ$-soft with shallow triaxial minima. The first crossing in the new bands is proposed to be due to an alignment of $h^2_{11/2}$ neutrons.

Understanding the different rotational behaviors of $^{252}$No and $^{254}$No

Total Routhian surface calculations have been performed to investigate rapidly rotating transfermium nuclei, the heaviest nuclei accessible by detailed spectroscopy experiments. The observed fast alignment in $^{252}$No and slow alignment in $^{254}$No are well reproduced by the calculations incorporating high-order deformations. The different rotational behaviors of $^{252}$No and $^{254}$No can be understood for the first time in terms of $β_6$ deformation that decreases the energies of the $νj_{15/2}$ intruder orbitals below the N=152 gap. Our investigations reveal the importance of high-order deformation in describing not only the multi-quasiparticle states but also the rotational spectra, both providing probes of the single-particle structure concerning the expected doubly-magic superheavy nuclei.

Deformation and its influence on $K$ isomerism in neutron-rich Hf nuclei

We investigate the influence of deformation on the possible occurrence of long-lived $K$ isomers in Hf isotopes around N=116, using configuration-constrained calculations of potential-energy surfaces. Despite having reduced shape elongation, the multi-quasiparticle states in $^{186,188}$Hf remain moderately robust against triaxial distortion, supporting the long expected occurrence of exceptionally long-lived isomers. The calculations are compared with available experimental data.

Effects of high order deformation on superheavy high-$K$ isomers

Using, for the first time, configuration-constrained potential-energy-surface calculations with the inclusion of $β_6$ deformation, we find remarkable effects of the high order deformation on the high-$K$ isomers in $^{254}$No, the focus of recent spectroscopy experiments on superheavy nuclei. For shapes with multipolarity six, the isomers are more tightly bound and, microscopically, have enhanced deformed shell gaps at $N=152$ and $Z=100$. The inclusion of $β_6$ deformation significantly improves the description of the very heavy high-$K$ isomers.

Influence of itinerancy on the magnetic properties of the single crystals of Sr2YRu1-xCuxO6 solid solutions

X-ray absorption spectroscopy(XAS) Ru L-edge and O K-edge measurements on single crystals of Sr2YRu1-xCuxO6 (x=0.01-0.05) solid solutions show that Cu replaces Ru in the lattice which results in a lattice distortion and itinerant holes that increase with increasing x. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements confirm the lattice distortion through changes in the lattice parameters. Magnetic measurements reveal an antiferromagnetic transition at 32 K in the crystals with x=0 and a diamagnetic transition at 32 K for x \geq 0.01indicative of superconductivity in the zero field cooled (ZFC) curves. The field cooled (FC) curves show a weak ferromagnetic character with x=0 and a ferromagnetic transition at 30 K and an antiferromagnetic transition at 23 K in the presence of Cu. The peak at 30 K in the ac susceptibility measurements indicates a spin-glass behavior. The low field part of the M-H curve for x=0.05 crystal indicates weak superconductivity. The shifting of the M-H curve on FC indicates spin-glass state. In conjunction with the XAS results the magnetic behavior is explained in terms of a spontaneous vortex state as a result of the non-freezing Ru5+ spins.

Nonmagnetic impurity perturbation to the quasi-two-dimensional quantum helimagnet LiCu2O2

A complete phase diagram of Zn substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu2O2 has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature (T_h) of the original LiCu2O2 follows finite size scaling for less than ~ 5.5% Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn substitution > 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an intriguing Zn level dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T_c (Zn > 0.055,H). The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor (nn) J1 and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) J2 (alpha=J2/J1) are extracted from high temperature series expansion (HTSE) fitting and N=16 finite chain exact diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of electric polarization in this spin driven multiferroic material.

X-ray absorption and optical spectroscopy studies of (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)B$_2$

X-ray absorption spectroscopy and optical reflectance measurements have been carried out to elucidate the evolution of the electronic structure in (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$)B$_{2}$ for $\emph{x}$ = 0.0,0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4. The important role of B 2$\emph{p}$ $σ$ hole states to superconductivity has been identified, and the decrease in the hole carrier number is $\emph{quantitatively}$ determined. The rate of the decrease in the hole concentration agree well with the theoretical calculations. On the other hand, while the evolution of the electronic structure is gradual through the doping range, $T_c$ suppression is most significant at $\emph{x}$ = 0.4. These results suggest that the superstructure in (Mg$_{1-x}$Al$_{x}$)B$_{2}$, in addition to the $σ$ holes, can affect the lattice dynamics and contributes to the $T_c$ suppression effect. Other possible explanations like the topological change of the $σ$ band Fermi surface are also discussed.
