Quasirandomness in hypergraphs

An $n$-vertex graph $G$ of edge density $p$ is considered to be quasirandom if it shares several important properties with the random graph $G(n,p)$. A well-known theorem of Chung, Graham and Wilson states that many such `typical' properties are asymptotically equivalent and, thus, a graph $G$ possessing one such property automatically satisfies the others. In recent years, work in this area has focused on uncovering more quasirandom graph properties and on extending the known results to other discrete structures. In the context of hypergraphs, however, one may consider several different notions of quasirandomness. A complete description of these notions has been provided recently by Towsner, who proved several central equivalences using an analytic framework. We give short and purely combinatorial proofs of the main equivalences in Towsner's result.

Minimum vertex degree conditions for loose Hamilton cycles in $3$-uniform hypergraphs

We investigate minimum vertex degree conditions for $3$-uniform hypergraphs which ensure the existence of loose Hamilton cycles. A loose Hamilton cycle is a spanning cycle in which only consecutive edges intersect and these intersections consist of precisely one vertex. We prove that every $3$-uniform $n$-vertex ($n$ even) hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ with minimum vertex degree $δ_1(\mathcal{H})\geq \left(\frac7{16}+o(1)\right)\binom{n}{2}$ contains a loose Hamilton cycle. This bound is asymptotically best possible.

Ramsey-type numbers involving graphs and hypergraphs with large girth

A question of Erdős asks if for every pair of positive integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ having $\textrm{girth}(H)=k$ and the property that every $r$-colouring of the edges of $H$ yields a monochromatic cycle $C_k$. The existence of such graphs was confirmed by the third author and Ruciński. We consider the related numerical problem of determining the smallest such graph with this property. We show that for integers $r$ and $k$, there exists a graph $H$ on $R^{10k^2} k^{15k^3}$ vertices (where $R = R(C_k;r)$ is the $r$-colour Ramsey number for the cycle $C_k$) having $\textrm{girth}(H)=k$ and the Ramsey property that every $r$-colouring of $E(H)$ yields a monochromatic $C_k$. Two related numerical problems regarding arithmetic progressions in sets and cliques in graphs are also considered.
