The role of polarized positrons and electrons in revealing fundamental interactions at the Linear Collider

The proposed International Linear Collider (ILC) is well-suited for discovering physics beyond the Standard Model and for precisely unraveling the structure of the underlying physics. The physics return can be maximized by the use of polarized beams. This report shows the paramount role of polarized beams and summarizes the benefits obtained from polarizing the positron beam, as well as the electron beam. The physics case for this option is illustrated explicitly by analyzing reference reactions in different physics scenarios. The results show that positron polarization, combined with the clean experimental environment provided by the linear collider, allows to improve strongly the potential of searches for new particles and the identification of their dynamics, which opens the road to resolve shortcomings of the Standard Model. The report also presents an overview of possible designs for polarizing both beams at the ILC, as well as for measuring their polarization.

Precision measurements of Higgs-chargino couplings in chargino pair production at a muon collider

We study chargino pair production on the heavy Higgs resonances at a muon collider in the MSSM. At $\sqrt{s} \approx 350$ GeV cross sections up to 2 pb are reached depending on the supersymmetric scenario and the beam energy spread. The resonances of the scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs bosons may be separated for $\tanβ<8$. Our aim is to determine the ratio of the chargino couplings to the heavy scalar and pseudoscalar Higgs boson independently of the specific chargino decay characteristics. The precision of the measurement depends on the energy resolution of the muon collider and on the error in the measurement of the cross sections of the non-Higgs channels including an irreducible standard model background. With a high energy resolution the systematic error can be reduced to the order of a few percent.

Selectron Pair Production at e-e- and e+e- Colliders with Polarized Beams

We investigate selectron pair production and decay in e-e- scattering and e+e- annihilation with polarized beams taking into account neutralino mixing as well as ISR and beamstrahlung corrections. One of the main advantages of having both modes at disposal is their complementarity concerning the threshold behaviour of selectron pair production. In e-e- the cross sections at threshold for seleectron_R selectron_R and selectron_L selectron_L rise proportional to the momentum of the selectron and in e+ e- that for selectron_R selectron_L. Measurements at threshold with polarized beams can be used to determine the selectron masses precisely. Moreover we discuss how polarized electron and positron beams can be used to establish directly the weak quantum numbers of the selectrons. We also use selectron pair production to determine the gaugino mass parameter M_1. This is of particular interest for scenarios with non-universal gaugino masses at a high scale resulting in |M_1| << |M_2| at the electroweak scale. Moreover, we consider also the case of a non-vanishing selectron mixing and demonstrate that it leads to a significant change in the phenomenology of selectrons.

Neutralinos in E_6 inspired supersymmetric U(1)' models

The neutralino sector in E_6 inspired supersymmetric models with extra neutral gauge bosons and singlet Higgs fields contains additional gaugino and singlino states compared to the MSSM. We discuss the neutralino mixing in rank 5 and rank 6 models and analyze the supersymmetric parameter space where the light neutralinos have mainly singlino or MSSM character. The neutralino character, resonance effects of the new gauge bosons and, assuming mSUGRA-type RGEs, different selectron masses lead to significant differences between the MSSM and the extended models in neutralino production at an e^+e^- linear collider. Beam polarization may improve the signatures to distinguish between the models. In an appendix, we present the mass terms of the gauge bosons, charginos and sfermions which show a significant different mass spectrum than in the MSSM and give all relevant neutralino couplings.

Constraining the Selectron Mass in the Process e^- + gamma --> neutralino_1 +selectron_{L/R}^- --> e^- + 2 neutralino_1

With the process $e^-γ\to \tildeχ_1^0 \tilde{e}_{L/R}^- \to e^- \tildeχ_1^0 \tildeχ_1^0$ it is possible to constrain selectron masses above the kinematical limit of the pair production process in $e^+e^-$ colliders. We investigate these mass ranges and discuss the possibility to test the renormalization group equations for the selectron masses.

Selectron Mass Effects in Neutralino Production

We study the possibility to measure the masses of the selectrons in neutralino production at an e^+ e^- linear collider with polarized beams. The cross sections and polarization asymmetries of neutralinos with gaugino character strongly depend on the masses of the exchanged selectrons. If the usual GUT relations of the selectron masses in the MSSM are relaxed large effects are possible especially in the polarization asymmetries. These can be used to determine the masses of both selectrons.

Spin Correlations in Production and Subsequent Decay of Neutralinos

We study the process e^{-} e^{+} -> chi^0_1 chi^0_2 with the subsequent decay chi^0_2 -> chi^0_1 l^{+} l^{-} taking into account the complete spin correlations. We give the analytical formulae for the differential cross section and present numerical results for the lepton angular distribution and the distribution of the opening angle between the outgoing leptons for the LEP2 energy of sqrt{s}=193 GeV and for sqrt{s}=500 GeV. We examine three representative mixing scenarios in the MSSM and also study the influence of the common scalar mass parameter m_0 on the shape of the distributions. For the lepton angular distribution the effect of the spin correlations amounts to up to 20% for lower energies. We find that the opening angle distribution is suitable for distinguishing between higgsino-like and gaugino-like neutralinos. The shape of the lepton angular distribution is very sensitive to the mixing in the gaugino sector and to the value of m_0. For higher energies it is also suitable for distinguishing between higgsino-like and gaugino-like neutralino.

Chargino-Sneutrino Production in Electron-Photon Collisions

We study the production of charginos and sneutrinos in electron-photon collisions within the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The high energy photons can be generated by Compton backscattering of intense laser pulses off one of the beams of the Next Linear Collider (NLC). This process could offer a significant opportunity to identify sneutrinos, which exclusively decay invisibly into a neutrino and the LSP, since the cross sections are two orders of magnitude higher than for the radiative production of invisible sneutrinos. For three scenarios of gaugino-higgsino mixing the cross sections and polarization asymmetries are computed and the resulting signatures are compared with the SM background.

Associated Slepton-Neutralino/Chargino Production at LEPxLHC

We examine for representative gaugino-higgsino mixing scenarios slepton-neutralino and slepton-chargino production in deep inelastic ep-scattering at $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV. We find sneutrino-chargino production to be the dominant process with cross sections more than one order of magnitude bigger than those for slepton-squark production. Also for associated production of sneutrinos and zino-like neutralinos the cross sections are at least comparable to those for $\tilde l \tilde q$-production, whereas selectron-neutralino/chargino production is with cross sections significantly smaller than those for selectron-squark production less favorable. Typical signatures include events with up to four charged leptons, hadronic jets and, in some cases, gauge bosons.

Production and Decay of Neutralinos in the Next-To-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

Within the framework of the Next-To-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) we study neutralino production $e^+e^- \longrightarrow \tildeχ^0_i \tildeχ^0_j$ ($i,j=1,\ldots ,5$) at center-of-mass energies between 100 and 600 GeV and the decays of the heavier neutralinos into the LSP plus a fermion pair, a photon or a Higgs boson. For representative gaugino/higgsino mixing scenarios, where the light neutralinos have significant singlet components, we find some striking differences between the NMSSM and the minimal supersymmetric model. Since in the NMSSM neutralino and Higgs sector are strongly correlated, the decay of the second lightest neutralino into a Higgs boson and the LSP often is kinematically possible and even dominant in a large parameter region of typical NMSSM scenarios. Also, the decay rates into final states with a photon may be enhanced.
