Deep Hubble Space Telescope Imaging on the Extended Ly$α$ Emission of a QSO at $z = 2.19$ with Damped Lyman Alpha System as a Natural Coronagraph

Recent observations suggest that proximate damped Ly$α$ (PDLA) systems can be used to study the host galaxies of Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), because the PDLAs can block the bright point-spread-function (PSF) from central QSOs. Using six-orbits of narrowband imaging with $\it{HST}$/WFC3, we present the first high resolution narrowband image of the Ly$α$ emission in the PDLA trough of the QSO SDSSJ115432.67-021537.9 . We detect one major component and one minor component in the narrowband imaging. Combining the $\it{HST}$/WFC3 imaging with deep Magellan/MagE spectra, we measure that the Ly$α$ flux F$_{\rm{Lyα}}$ = 1.56$\pm0.10 \times10^{-16}$ $\rm{erg\ s^{-1}\ cm^{-2}}$, which is among the luminous ($\approx$ 2.7 L$^{\star}_{\rm{Lyα}}$) Ly$α$ emitters at $\it{z} =$ 2.19. The $\rm{Lyα}$-based star formation rate (SFR) is $\sim$ 7 $\textrm{M_{\sun} \ yr^{-1}}$. These observational results favor that the star formation from the host galaxy could be the main mechanism to power the Ly$α$ emission. This new method sheds new light on the study of the kinematic structure and the spatial distribution of the extended Ly$α$ emitting regions around the QSO host.

An investigation of the line of sight towards QSO PKS 0237-233

We present a detailed analysis of absorption systems along the line of sight towards QSO PKS 0237-233 using a high resolution spectrum of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ~ 60-80 obtained with the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph mounted on the Very Large Telescope. This line of sight is known to show a remarkable overdensity of CIV systems that has been interpreted as revealing the presence of a supercluster of galaxies. A detailed analysis of each of these absorption systems is presented. In particular, for the z_abs = 1.6359 (with two components of logN(HI) = 18.45, 19.05) and z_abs = 1.6720 (logN(H I) = 19.78) sub-Damped Ly-alpha systems (sub-DLAs), we measure accurate abundances (resp. [O/H] = -1.63(0.07) and [Zn/H] = - 0.57(0.05) relative to solar). While the depletion of refractory elements onto dust grains in both sub-DLAs is not noteworthy, photoionization models show that ionization effects are important in a part of the absorbing gas of the sub-DLA at z_abs = 1.6359 (HI is 95 percent ionized) and in part of the gas of the sub-DLA at z_abs = 1.6359. The CIV clustering properties along the line of sight is studied in order to investigate the nature of the observed overdensity. We conclude that despite the unusually high number of CIV systems detected along the line of sight, there is no compelling evidence for the presence of a single unusual overdensity and that the situation is consistent with chance coincidence.

The UVES Large Program for Testing Fundamental Physics II: Constraints on a Change in μ Towards Quasar HE 0027-1836

We present an accurate analysis of the H2 absorption lines from the zabs ~ 2.4018 damped Lyα system towards HE 0027-1836 observed with the Very Large Telescope Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (VLT/UVES) as a part of the European Southern Observatory Large Programme "The UVES large programme for testing fundamental physics" to constrain the variation of proton-to-electron mass ratio, μ = mp/me. We perform cross-correlation analysis between 19 individual exposures taken over three years and the combined spectrum to check the wavelength calibration stability. We notice the presence of a possible wavelength dependent velocity drift especially in the data taken in 2012. We use available asteroids spectra taken with UVES close to our observations to confirm and quantify this effect. We consider single and two component Voigt profiles to model the observed H2 absorption profiles. We use both linear regression analysis and Voigt profile fitting where Δμ/μ is explicitly considered as an additional fitting parameter. The two component model is marginally favored by the statistical indicators and we get Δμ/μ = (-2.5 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.2(sys)) ppm. When we apply the correction to the wavelength dependent velocity drift we find Δμ/μ = (-7.6 +/- 8.1(stat) +/- 6.3(sys)) ppm. It will be important to check the extent to which the velocity drift we notice in this study is present in UVES data used for previous Δμ/μ measurements.
