Alloying 2D VSe2 with Pt: from a charge density wave state to a disordered insulator

We have analyzed by means of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy the atomic and electronic structure of monolayers of 1T-VxPt1-xSe2 alloys grown by molecular beam epitaxy on epitaxial graphene substrates. We have focused on the composition range (0.1<x<0.35) where ferromagnetic behaviour has recently been demonstrated. For low Pt concentration, (x=0.07 and x=0.21), small domains (a few nanometres in diameter) exhibiting the characteristic superstructure of the charge density wave (CDW) state of pristine VSe2 monolayer remain visible on most of the sample surface. Thus alloying preserves the short range order of the CDW phase, although it destroys its long range order. For higher Pt concentration (x=0.35) a disordered alloy forms. It presents a fully developped gap (a few tens meV in width) at the Fermi level and is thus a disordered insulator. This gap exhibits strong variations at the nanometer scale, reflecting the local fluctuations in the composition. An unexpectedly large interaction of the TMD layer with the graphene substrate sets in for this composition range.

Spin dynamics of positively charged excitons in Cr$^+$-doped quantum dots probed by resonant photoluminescence

We study the dynamics of the spin system that consist of a positively charged II-VI semiconductor quantum dot doped with a single Cr$^+$ ion. The resonant photoluminescence (PL) of the positively charged exciton coupled with the Cr$^+$ spin is used to analyze the main spin relaxation channels. The intensity of the resonant PL is reduced by an optical pumping of the spin of the resident hole-Cr$^+$ complex that can be seen as a nano-magnet. The spin memory can be partially erased by a non-resonant optical excitation. This leads to an increase of the resonant PL signal. The resonant PL is co-circularly polarized and corresponds to relaxation channels that conserve the Cr$^+$ spin $\vert S_z \vert$. The observation in the resonant-PL excitation spectra of optical transitions with a change of the Cr$^+$ spin permits to determine the magnetic anisotropy of the magnetic atom. Optical pumping, auto-correlation measurements and the power dependence of the PL intensity distribution show that the effective temperature of the hole-Cr$^+$ spin system is affected by the optical excitation through the local generation of phonons.

Radio-frequency stress-induced modulation of CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots

We demonstrate radio-frequency tuning of the energy of individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots (QDs) by Surface Acoustic Waves (SAWs). Despite the very weak piezoelectric coefficient of ZnTe, SAW in the GHz range can be launched on a ZnTe surface using interdigitated transducers deposited on a c-axis oriented ZnO layer grown on ZnTe containing CdTe QDs. The photoluminescence (PL) of individual QDs is used as a nanometer-scale sensor of the acoustic strain field. The energy of QDs is modulated by SAW in the GHz range and leads to characteristic broadening of time-integrated PL spectra. The dynamic modulation of the QD PL energy can also be detected in the time domain using phase-locked time domain spectroscopy. This technique is in particular used for monitoring complex local acoustic fields resulting from the superposition of two or more SAW pulses in a cavity. Under magnetic field, the dynamic spectral tuning of a single QD by SAW can be used to generate single photons with alternating circular polarization controlled in the GHz range.

Influence of non-equilibrium phonons on the spin dynamics of a single Cr atom

We analyse the influence of optically generated non-equilibrium phonons on the spin relaxation and effective spin temperature of an individual Cr atom inserted in a quantum dot. Using a three pulses pump-probe technique, we show that the spin relaxation measured in resonant optical pumping experiments strongly depends on the optical excitation conditions. We observe for an isolated Cr in the dark a heating time shorter than a few hundreds $ns$ after an initial high power non-resonant excitation pulse. A cooling time larger than a few tens of $μs$, independent on the excitation, is obtained in the same experimental conditions. We show that a tunable spin-lattice coupling dependent on the density of non-equilibrium phonons can explain the observed dynamics. Low energy excitation conditions are found where the Cr spin states S$_z$=$\pm$1 can be efficiently populated by a non-resonant optical excitation, prepared and read-out by resonant optical pumping and conserved in the dark during a few $μ$s.

Individual Cr atom in a semiconductor quantum dot: optical addressability and spin-strain coupling

We demonstrate the optical addressability of the spin of an individual Chromium atom (Cr) embedded in a semiconductor quantum dot. The emission of Cr-doped quantum dots and their evolution in magnetic field reveal a large magnetic anisotropy of the Cr spin induced by local strain. This results in the zero field splitting of the 0, +-1 and +-2 Cr spin states and in a thermalization on the magnetic ground states 0 and +-1. The observed strong spin to strain coupling of Cr is of particular interest for the development of hybrid spin-mechanical devices where coherent mechanical driving of an individual spin in an oscillator is needed. The magneto-optical properties of Cr-doped quantum dots are modelled by a spin Hamiltonian including the sensitivity of the Cr spin to the strain and the influence of the quantum dot symmetry on the carrier-Cr spin coupling.

Spin dynamics of an individual Cr atom in a semiconductor quantum dot under optical excitation

We studied the spin dynamics of a Cr atom incorporated in a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot using photon correlation techniques. We used recently developed singly Cr-doped CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots (A. Lafuente-Sampietro {\it et al.}, [1]) to access the spin of an individual magnetic atom. Auto-correlation of the photons emitted by the quantum dot under continuous wave optical excitation reveals fluctuations of the localized spin with a timescale in the 10 ns range. Cross-correlation gives quantitative transfer time between Cr spin states. A calculation of the time dependence of the spin levels population in Cr-doped quantum dots shows that the observed spin dynamics is controlled by the exciton-Cr interaction. These measurements also provide a lower bound in the 20 ns range for the intrinsic Cr spin relaxation time.

Strain induced coherent dynamics of coupled carriers and Mn spins in a quantum dot

We report on the coherent dynamics of the spin of an individual magnetic atom coupled to carriers in a semiconductor quantum dot which has been investigated by resonant photoluminescence of the positively charged exciton (X+). We demonstrate that a positively charged CdTe/ZnTe quantum dot doped with a single Mn atom forms an ensemble of optical Lambda systems which can be addressed independently. We show that the spin dynamics of the X+Mn complex is dominated by the electron-Mn exchange interaction and report on the coherent dynamics of the electron-Mn spin system that is directly observed in the time domain. Quantum beats reflecting the coherent transfer of population between electron-Mn spin states, which are mixed by an anisotropic strain in the plane of the quantum dot, are clearly observed. We finally highlight that this strain induced coherent coupling is tunable with an external magnetic field.

Dynamics of a Mn spin coupled to a single hole confined in a quantum dot

Using the emission of the positively charged exciton as a probe, we analyze the dynamics of the optical pumping and the dynamics of the relaxation of a Mn spin exchange-coupled with a confined hole spin in a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot. The hole-Mn spin can be efficiently initialized in a few tens of $ns$ under optical injection of spin polarized carriers. We show that this optical pumping process and its dynamics are controlled by electron-Mn flip-flops within the positively charged exciton-Mn complex. The pumping mechanism and its magnetic field dependence are theoretically described by a model including the dynamics of the electron-Mn complex in the excited state and the dynamics of the hole-Mn complex in the ground state of the positively charged quantum dot. We measure at zero magnetic field a spin relaxation time of the hole-Mn spin in the $μs$ range or shorter. This hole-Mn spin relaxation is induced by the presence of valence band mixing in self-assembled quantum dots.

Resonant optical pumping of a Mn spin in a strain free quantum dot

We report on the spin properties of individual Mn atoms in II-VI semiconductor strain free quantum dots. Strain free Mn-doped CdTe quantum dots are formed by width fluctuations in thin quantum wells lattice matched on a CdTe substrate. These quantum dots permit to optically probe and address any spin state of a Mn atom in a controlled strain environment. The absence of strain induced magnetic anisotropy prevents an optical pumping of the Mn spin at zero magnetic field. Thus, a large photoluminescence is obtained under resonant optical excitation of the exciton-Mn complex. An efficient optical pumping of the coupled electronic and nuclear spins of the Mn is restored under a weak magnetic field. The observed reduction of the resonant photoluminescence intensity under magnetic field is well described by a model including the hyperfine coupling and a residual crystal field splitting of the Mn atom. Finally, we show that the second order correlation function of the resonant photoluminescence presents a large photon bunching at short delay which is a probe of the dynamics of coupled electronic and nuclear spins of the Mn atom.

Spin dynamics of a Mn atom in a semiconductor quantum dot under resonant optical excitation

We analyze the spin dynamics of an individual magnetic atom (Mn) inserted in a II-VI semiconductor quantum dot under resonant optical excitation. In addition to standard optical pumping expected for a resonant excitation, we show that for particular conditions of laser detuning and excitation intensity, the spin population can be trapped in the state which is resonantly excited. This effect is modeled considering the coherent spin dynamics of the coupled electronic and nuclear spin of the Mn atom optically dressed by a resonant laser field. This spin population trapping mechanism is controlled by the combined effect of the coupling with the laser field and the coherent interaction between the different Mn spin states induced by an anisotropy of the strain in the plane of the quantum dot.

Electron-nuclei spin dynamics in II-VI semiconductor quantum dots

We report on the dynamics of optically induced nuclear spin polarization in individual CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots loaded with one electron by modulation doping. The fine structure of the hot trion (charged exciton $X^-$ with an electron in the $P$-shell) is identified in photoluminescence excitation spectra. A negative polarisation rate of the photoluminescence, optical pumping of the resident electron and the built-up of dynamic nuclear spin polarisation (DNSP) are observed in time-resolved optical pumping experiments when the quantum dot is excited at higher energy than the hot trion triplet state. The time and magnetic field dependence of the polarisation rate of the $X^-$ emission allows to probe the dynamics of formation of the DNSP in the optical pumping regime. We demonstrate using time-resolved measurements that the creation of a DNSP at B=0T efficiently prevents longitudinal spin relaxation of the electron caused by fluctuations of the nuclear spin bath. The DNSP is built in the microsecond range at high excitation intensity. A relaxation time of the DNSP in about 10 microseconds is observed at $B=0T$ and significantly increases under a magnetic field of a few milli-Tesla. We discuss mechanisms responsible for the fast initialisation and relaxation of the diluted nuclear spins in this system.

Optical control of the spin state of two Mn atoms in a quantum dot

We report on the optical spectroscopy of the spin of two magnetic atoms (Mn) embedded in an individual quantum dot interacting with either a single electron, a single exciton and single trion. As a result of their interaction to a common entity, the Mn spins become correlated. The dynamics of this process is probed by time resolved spectroscopy, that permits to determine the optical orientation time in the range of a few tens of $ns$. In addition, we show that the energy of the collective spin states of the two Mn atoms can be tuned through the optical Stark effect induced by a resonant laser field.

Optical Stark Effect and Dressed Excitonic States in a Mn-doped Quantum Dot

We report on the observation of spin dependent optically dressed states and optical Stark effect on an individual Mn spin in a semiconductor quantum dot. The vacuum-to-exciton or the exciton-to-biexciton transitions in a Mn-doped quantum dot are optically dressed by a strong laser field and the resulting spectral signature is measured in photoluminescence. We demonstrate that the energy of any spin state of a Mn atom can be independently tuned using the optical Stark effect induced by a control laser. High resolution spectroscopy reveals a power, polarization and detuning dependent Autler-Townes splitting of each optical transition of the Mn-doped quantum dot. This experiment demonstrates a complete optical resonant control of the exciton-Mn system.

Optical initialization, readout and dynamics of a Mn spin in a quantum dot

We have investigated the spin preparation efficiency by optical pumping of individual Mn atoms embedded in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots. Monitoring the time dependence of the intensity of the fluorescence during the resonant optical pumping process in individual quantum dots allows to directly probe the dynamics of the initialization of the Mn spin. This technique presents the convenience of including preparation and read-out of the Mn spin in the same step. Our measurements demonstrate that Mn spin initialization, at zero magnetic field, can reach an efficiency of 75% and occurs in the tens of \emph{ns} range when a laser resonantly drives at saturation one of the quantum dot transition. We observe that the efficiency of optical pumping changes from dot to dot and is affected by a magnetic field of a few tens of mT applied in Voigt or Faraday configuration. This is attributed to the local strain distribution at the Mn location which predominantly determines the dynamics of the Mn spin under weak magnetic field. The spectral distribution of the spin-flip scattered photons from quantum dots presenting a weak optical pumping efficiency reveals a significant spin relaxation for the exciton split in the exchange field of the Mn spin.

Optical probing of spin fluctuations of a single magnetic atom

We analyzed the photoluminescence intermittency generated by a single paramagnetic spin localized in an individual semiconductor quantum dot. The statistics of the photons emitted by the quantum dot reflect the quantum fluctuations of the localized spin interacting with the injected carriers. Photon correlation measurements which are reported here reveal unique signatures of these fluctuations. A phenomenological model is proposed to quantitatively describe these observations, allowing a measurement of the spin dynamics of an individual magnetic atom at zero magnetic field. These results demonstrate the existence of an efficient spin relaxation channel arising from a spin-exchange with individual carriers surrounding the quantum dot. A theoretical description of a spin-flip mechanism involving spin exchange with surrounding carriers gives relaxation times in good agreement with the measured dynamics.

Optical spin orientation of a single manganese atom in a quantum dot

A hight degree of spin polarization is achieved for a Mn atom localized in a semiconductor quantum dot using quasi-resonant optical excitation at zero magnetic field. Optically created spin polarized carriers generate an energy splitting of the Mn spin and enable magnetic moment orientation controlled by the photon helicity and energy. The dynamics and the magnetic field dependence of the optical pumping mechanism shows that the spin lifetime of an isolated Mn atom at zero magnetic field is controlled by a magnetic anisotropy induced by the built-in strain in the quantum dots.

Photoluminescence of p-doped quantum wells with strong spin splitting

The spectroscopic properties of a spin polarized two-dimensional hole gas are studied in modulation doped (Cd,Mn)Te quantum wells. The giant Zeeman effect induces a significant spin splitting even at very small values of the applied field. Several methods of measuring the carrier density (Hall effect, filling factors of the Landau levels at high field, various manifestations of Moss-Burstein shifts) are described and calibrated. The value of the spin splitting needed to fully polarize the hole gas, evidences a strong enhancement of the spin susceptibility of the hole gas due to carrier-carrier interaction. At small values of the spin splitting, whatever the carrier density (non zero) is, photoluminescence lines are due to the formation of charged excitons in the singlet state. Spectral shifts in photoluminescence and in transmission (including an "excitonic Moss-Bustein shift") are observed and discussed in terms of excitations of the partially or fully polarized hole gas. At large spin splitting, and without changing the carrier density, the singlet state of the charged exciton is destabilized in favour of a triplet state configuration of holes. The binding energy of the singlet state is thus measured and found to be independent of the carrier density (in contrast with the splitting between the charged exciton and the neutral exciton lines). The state stable at large spin splitting is close to the neutral exciton at low carrier density, and close to an uncorrelated electron-hole pair at the largest values of the carrier density achieved. The triplet state gives rise to a characteristic double-line structure with an indirect transition to the ground state (with a strong phonon replica) and a direct transition to an excited state of the hole gas.
