Complete set of observables for photoproduction of two pseudoscalars on a nucleon

The problem of determining completely the spin amplitudes of photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon from observables is studied. The procedure of reconstruction of the scattering matrix elements from a complete set of observables is based on the expressions of all observables as quadratic hermitean forms in the reaction matrix elements which are derived explicitly. Their inversion allows one to find explicit solutions for the reaction matrix elements in terms of observables. Two methods for finding a complete set of observables are presented. In particular, one set was found, which does not contain a triple polarization observable.

A Truncated partial wave analysis of a complete experiment for photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon

A truncated partial wave analysis for the photoproduction of two pseudoscalar mesons on a nucleon is discussed with respect to the determination of a complete set of observables. For the selection of such a set we have applied a criterion previously developed for photo- and electrodisintegration of a deuteron, which allows one to find a 'minimal' set of observables for determining the partial wave amplitudes up to possible discrete ambiguities. The question of resolving the remaining ambiguities by invoking additional observables is discussed for the simplest case, when the partial wave expansion is truncated at the lowest total angular momentum of the final state Jmax=1/2J_{max}=1/2. The resulting 'fully' complete set, allowing an unambiguous determination of the partial wave amplitudes, is presented.

Parity Violating Effects in Elastic Electron Deuteron Scattering

The general expressions for parity violation observables in elastic scattering of polarized and/or unpolarized electrons from unpolarized deuterons are given and are numerically evaluated for the kinematics of SAMPLE, PVA4 and G0 experiments. The dominant contribution from the interference of γγ and Z exchange as well as the smaller contributions from strangeness (ssˉs{\bar{s}}) components of the nucleon, parity odd admixtures in the deuteron wave function, anapole moments and radiative corrections are included and discussed in the context of parity violating electron scattering experiments of present interest.

Double pion photoproduction on nucleon and deuteron

Photoproduction of two pions on nucleon and deuteron is studied for photon energies from threshold up to Eγ=1.5E_γ= 1.5 GeV. For the elementary operator an effective Lagrangean approach is used with resonance and Born contributions. The model parameters are fixed by resonance decay widths and multipole analyses of single pion photoproduction. A satisfactory description of total cross sections of two-pion production on the proton for various charge channels is achieved, except for π0π0π^0π^0 production for which a significant underestimation is found near threshold. The operator then serves for the evaluation of this reaction on the deuteron in the impulse approximation. In addition, NNNN rescattering in the final state is taken into account, but πNπN and ππππ rescatterings are neglected. Results are presented for total cross sections and target asymmetries.

Tensor Analyzing Powers for Quasi-Elastic Electron Scattering from Deuterium

We report on a first measurement of tensor analyzing powers in quasi-elastic electron-deuteron scattering at an average three-momentum transfer of 1.7 fm−1^{-1}. Data sensitive to the spin-dependent nucleon density in the deuteron were obtained for missing momenta up to 150 MeV/cc with a tensor polarized 2^2H target internal to an electron storage ring. The data are well described by a calculation that includes the effects of final-state interaction, meson-exchange and isobar currents, and leading-order relativistic contributions.

On the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the deuteron

The Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule is evaluated for the deuteron by explicit integration up to 550 MeV including contributions from the photodisintegration channel and from coherent and incoherent single pion production as well. The photodisintegration channel converges fast enough in this energy range and gives a large negative contribution, essentially from the 1S0^1S_0 resonant state near threshold. Its absolute value is about the same size as the sum of proton and neutron GDH values. It is only partially cancelled by the single pion production contribution. But the incoherent channel has not reached convergence at 550 MeV.

Treatment of the ΔΔ current in electromagnetic two-nucleon knockout reactions

The contribution of the ΔΔ(1232) isobar to the electromagnetic current of the two-nucleon system and its role in (γγ,NN) processes is investigated. The difference between the genuine ΔΔ-excitation current and that part of the current connected to the deexcitation of a preformed ΔΔ in the target nucleus is stressed. The latter cannot lead to a resonant behaviour of matrix elements for energies in the ΔΔ region. The reaction 16O(γ,pp)14C^{16}O(γ,pp)^{14}C, where the ΔΔ contribution is dominant at intermediate energies, is considered. The large variations found in the cross sections for different treatments stress the need for a proper treatment of the ΔΔ current for a clear understanding of the reaction mechanism of two-nucleon emission processes.

Intrinsic operators for the electromagnetic nuclear current

The intrinsic electromagnetic nuclear meson exchange charge and current operators arising from a separation of the center-of-mass motion are derived for a one-boson-exchange model for the nuclear interaction with scalar, pseudoscalar and vector meson exchange including leading order relativistic terms. Explicit expressions for the meson exchange operators corresponding to the different meson types are given in detail for a two-nucleon system. These intrinsic operators are to be evaluated between intrinsic wave functions in their center-of-mass frame.

Quasifree pion photoproduction on the deuteron in the ΔΔ region

Photo production of pions on the deuteron is studied in the spectator nucleon model. The Born terms of the elementary production amplitude are determined in pseudovector ππN coupling and supplied with a form factor. The ΔΔ resonance is considered both in the ss and the uu channel. The parameters of the ΔΔ resonance and the cutoff of the form factors are fixed on the leading photoproduction multipoles. Results for total and differential cross sections are compared with experimental data. Particular attention is paid to the role of Pauli correlations of the final state nucleons in the quasifree case. The results are compared with those for pion photoproduction on the nucleon.
