A statistical model to calculate inclusive hadronic cross sections

Hadronic cross sections are important ingredients in many of the ongoing research methods in high-energy nuclear physics, and it is always important to measure and/or calculate the probabilities of different types of reactions. In heavy-ion transport simulations at a few GeV energies, these hadronic cross sections are essential and so far mostly the exclusive processes are used, however, if one interested in total production rates the inclusive cross sections are also necessary to know. In this paper, we introduce a statistical-based method, which is able to give good estimates to exclusive and inclusive cross sections as well in the energy range of a few GeV. The method and its estimates for not well-known cross sections, will be used in a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) type off-shell transport code to explain charmonium and bottomonium mass shifts in heavy-ion collisions.

Charmed and bottomed hadronic cross sections from a statistical model

In this work, we extended our statistical model with charmed and bottomed hadrons, and fit the quark creational probabilities for the heavy quarks, using low energy inclusive charmonium and bottomonium data. With the finalized fit for all the relevant types of quarks (up, down, strange, charm, bottom) at the energy range from a few GeV up to a few tens of GeV's, the model is now considered complete. Some examples are also given for proton-proton, pion-proton, and proton-antiproton collisions with charmonium, bottomonium, and open charm hadrons in the final state.

Hybrid star properties from an extended linear sigma model

The equation of state provided by effective models of strongly interacting matter should comply with the restrictions imposed by current astrophysical observations on compact stars. Using the equation of state given by the (axial-)vector meson extended linear sigma model, we determine the mass-radius relation and study whether these restrictions are satisfied under the assumption that most of the star is filled with quark matter. We study the dependence of the mass-radius relation on the parameters of the model.

Neutron star properties with careful parameterization in the (axial)vector meson extended linear sigma model

The existence of quark matter inside the cores of heavy neutron stars is a possibility which can be probed with modern astrophysical observations. We use an (axial)vector meson extended quark-meson model to describe quark matter in the core of neutron stars. We discover that an additional parameter constraint is necessary in the quark model to ensure chiral restoration at high densities. By investigating hybrid star sequences with various parameter sets we show that low sigma meson masses are needed to fulfill the upper radius constraints, and that the maximum mass of stable hybrid stars is only slightly dependent on the parameters of the crossover-type phase transition. Using this observation and results from recent astrophysical measurements a constraint of 2.6 < g_V < 4.3 is set for the constituent quark - vector meson coupling. The effect of a nonzero bag constant is also investigated and we observe that its effect is small for values adopted in previous works.

Existence of the critical endpoint in the vector meson extended linear sigma model

The chiral phase transition of the strongly interacting matter is investigated at nonzero temperature and baryon chemical potential mu_B within an extended (2+1) flavor Polyakov constituent quark-meson model which incorporates the effect of the vector and axial vector mesons. The effect of the fermionic vacuum and thermal fluctuations computed from the grand potential of the model is taken into account in the curvature masses of the scalar and pseudoscalar mesons. The parameters of the model are determined by comparing masses and tree-level decay widths with experimental values in a chi^2-minimization procedure which selects between various possible assignments of scalar nonet states to physical particles. We examine the restoration of the chiral symmetry by monitoring the temperature evolution of condensates and the chiral partners' masses and of the mixing angles for the pseudoscalar eta-eta' and the corresponding scalar complex. We calculate the pressure and various thermodynamical observables derived from it and compare them to the continuum extrapolated lattice results of the Wuppertal-Budapest collaboration. We study the T-mu_B phase diagram of the model and find that a critical end point exists for parameters of the model, which give acceptable values of chi^2.

Chiral phase transition in the vector meson extended linear sigma model

In the framework of an SU(3) (axial)vector meson extended linear sigma model with additional constituent quarks and Polyakov loops, we investigate the effects of (axial)vector mesons on the chiral phase transition. The parameters of the Lagrangian are set at zero temperature and we use a hybrid approach where in the effective potential the constituent quarks are treated at one-loop level and all the mesons at tree-level. We have four order parameters, two scalar condensates and two Polyakov loop variables and their temperature and baryochemical potential dependence are determined from the corresponding field equations. We also investigate the changes of the tree-level scalar meson masses in the hot and dense medium.

Chiral phase transition scenarios from the vector meson extended Polyakov quark meson model

Chiral phase transition is investigated in an $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ symmetric vector meson extended linear sigma model with additional constituent quarks and Polyakov loops (extended Polyakov quark meson model). The parameterization of the Lagrangian is done at zero temperature in a hybrid approach, where the mesons are treated at tree-level, while the constituent quarks at 1-loop level. The temperature and baryochemical potential dependence of the two assumed scalar condensates are calculated from the hybrid 1-loop level equations of states. The order of the phase transition along the $T=0$ and $μ_B=0$ axes are determined for various parameterization scenarios. We find that in order to have a first order phase transition at $T=0$ as a function of $μ_B$ a light isoscalar particle is needed.

Thermal, chemical and spectral equilibration in heavy-ion collisions

We have considered the equilibration in a relativistic heavy ion collision using our transport model. We applied periodic boundary conditions to close the system in a box. We found that the thermal equilibration takes place in the first 20-40 fm/c which time is comparable to the duration of a heavy ion collision. The chemical equilibration is a much slower process and the system does not equilibrate in a heavy ion collision. We have also shown that the mass spectra of broad resonances immediately follows their in-medium spectral functions.

Dilepton production in pion-nucleon collisions in an effective field theory approach

We present a model of electron-positron pair production in pion-nucleon collisions in the exclusive reaction πN -> Ne^+e^-. The model is based on an effective field theory approach, incorporating 16 baryon resonances below 2 GeV. Parameters of the model are fitted to pion photoproduction data. We present the resulting dilepton invariant mass spectra for π^- p collisions up to sqrt(s)=1.9 GeV center-of-mass collision energy. These results are meant to give predictions for the planned experiments at the HADES spectrometer in GSI, Darmstadt.
